Wings, Hossa far apart in talks

The Red Wings were hoping to secure the signing of Marian Hossa to a long-term contract over the weekend. Instead, they could be preparing for next season without him. General manager Ken Holland and Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter, met several times in Montreal at the NHL entry draft but came no closer to making a deal.

It's clearly about money at this point. Detroit says they want to keep him, but the price HAS to have gone down after his disappearing act in the playoffs and especially the Finals. Hossa's people may not have figured out that the price drops when that happens.

In the end, the Wings will certainly want to keep him, but life will go on in Detroit if Hossa skates off to greener pastures. He should be able to pull about $6mil per year out of the Wings if he signs long term like Hank and the Mule, but if he wants alot more than that, he'll be wearing a different colour scheme next year I would think.

With the cap going down and his lack of show in the playoffs Hossa is probably in the range of $4mil a year. On top of that the Wings are trying to renegotiate their deal with the Joe Louis Arena because they claim it leaves them at a disadvantage (or whatever their reason was).

If Hossa wants another shot at the Cup he should resign with the Wings.

There's no doubt Hossa's got to lower his asking price. It may be smart on his part to sign another 1 year deal again with hopes that the nation's economy will bounce back and he himself will bounce back from a subpar playoff performance.

Stanley Cup championship aside, does anybody think that Hossa is kicking himself for not taking the long term deal that the Penguins offered him last summer?

I believe Edmonton offered him more money.

Hossa is being an idiot. He isn't deserving of more than $5 million.

Yeah for a player that never showed up in the stanley cup finals he should be asking 3.5 to 4 million in my opinion.

Edmonton last year offered him a 11 year $99 million deal, or something like that.

The cap isn't going down, stay informed before you post. Yes he disappeared late in the playoffs, but $4mil for a 40 goal performer is wishful thinking. If Scott Hannan is worth more than $4 mil, Hossa is.

Bets are, he leaves Detroit and gets a deal worth at least $6.5 mil.

He will go to one of the following teams: Montreal, LA, Edmonton, Minnesota or Vancouver if they don't resign the Sedins, they will get Hossa and Gaborik.

Don't forget Jeff Finger is getting 4 million. Hossa will get $7-8 million.

Hossa needs the Wings more than the Wings need him. I am pretty sure the Wings are quite comfortable putting out a number (I don't think it can get as high as $6 mil, maybe not even 5) and saying "take it or leave it." He's a great player, so the Wings would love to have him back and deal with the fallout from there; however, if he doesn't want to take the terms that are best for the team, Holland knows that he can spend that money to secure established talent in the likes of Hudler and Samuelsson.

And I'm sure Hossa's kicking himself over a lot right now.

You mean Pens, right? I could be wrong but I believe it was the Penguins who defeated Detroit in the Stanley Cup championship. Or did I just imagine that the Red Wings collapsed?

June 29, 2009  10:53 AM ET

Dude this isnt news... Its been known for almost a YEAR that Wings can afford 4 or so million a season, he can prolly get 7 or 8 million a season somewhere else but it will prolly be a crap team.

June 29, 2009  10:55 AM ET

If its all about money he goes to the Wild. They are ready to offer him big money again.

At this point, anyone wanting another run at the Cup SHOULD NOT sign Hossa. He may be bad "Cup Ju-Ju." Okay, just kidding. The guy has talent, but I can't believe this deal is about to fall apart. I thought it was almost a "done-deal." Interesting.

June 29, 2009  10:58 AM ET

Yeesh. I can't believe I am taking this bait, but please don't refer to it as a Wing collapse.

Fisrt off, the Wings were decimated with injuries - including one that cost Lidstrom a nut - and secondly, calling it a collapse truly takes away from the effort and performance the Pens put in the pull off that Championship. A healthy Wings team likely closes them out in Game 6, but to say that they "collapsed" is really unfair to Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and the rest of the Pens that played so well.

And, if you look back at the past few Cup Champs, the Wings are the only team that had a great showing the following season. Its not THAT out there to state that playing for the Wings is still the best chance to win the Cup...

June 29, 2009  11:01 AM ET

Don't come here. The Rangers will get to the finals and lose!

June 29, 2009  11:09 AM ET

hossa is a jinx come on now the penguins had him the year before and lost the wings had him last year and what happen ????? they lost plus they better worry about their other free agents let him go hell you guys dont think the pens have a chance to make it back to the finals come on now wings are getting old there .... that was proven in game seven
