Devils to hire Lemaire?

After two busy days at the NHL entry draft in Montreal, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello has three more days to brace for the opening of the free agent market on Wednesday. Those three days provide a window for Lamoriello to name a successor to head coach Brent Sutter, and there are strong indications he will utilize it, perhaps as soon as Monday. Lamoriello said naming a head coach is next on his agenda. When asked if he intended to do so before July 1, Lamoriello replied, "We???ll see." The evidence continues to point toward former Devils coach Jacques Lemaire, who directed the team to its first Stanley Cup in 1995. Lemaire, who will turn 64 in September, has avoided mentioning the Devils when talking about his coaching future, but they are the only team without a head coach. An NHL source said Lemaire had anticipated that Lamoriello would formally offer him the job before the draft, but that did not occur, which seemed to suggest that Lamoriello still was talking to other candidates.

How many times do I have to say this, but NOOOOOOO.
Stop going back in time Lou. Unless you see Doc, Biff and a delorian there is no chance of time travel.

Not sure how great of an idea it is, but how many mistakes has Lou really made over the years? Tough not to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I know that tehre will be a reduced number of Devils games watched by me next year if Lemaire is brought back in, that's for sure.

But what's the big rush to name a coach? Its not like Lou asks them for their input on personnel decisions or anything, its 100% his ship to run. They could wait till the week before training camp starts before hiring a coach, in my opinion.

I can see it now - hire a coach the week before you need him, then fire him the week before the playoffs! Think of the money the team will save!

As long as he bring laryy robinson on the bench as an assistant I'm all for it..

The devils have always been at the best w/ Larry as the coach of the devils "D"..

God NJ has such good offense but it is never used so this tema instead of being 1st in the conference is often 2nd because the pressure on Marty and the defense is huge!

June 29, 2009  10:14 AM ET

You can't deny that Lemaire is a good coach. He is just really, really boring.

June 29, 2009  10:22 AM ET

Wish Scott Stevens would coach. Great leader and had all players respect.

Welcome back Trap!

June 29, 2009  12:11 PM ET

Ha ha thank you wild for getting rid of this horrible coach for the "new" nhl. Glad to see the wilds benefit is another teams misery.

June 29, 2009  12:11 PM ET

The NHL should ban Lemaire the same way Hollywood should ban Keanu Reeves.

Boring, no personality.

hahaha, nice joec, beauty.

But with that policy, all the Nic Cage fans out there would have a huge void in their lives...

Lemaire was a great fit when he first came to the Devils. Now he'll just stiffle the young offensive talent the team has.

Lou needs to give the job to John MacLean. He's got the respect of the players, has the offensive mindset for the new NHL and was a pretty good defensive player in his later years. I don't think the fans would ever turn on him either.

June 29, 2009  02:13 PM ET

John MacLean? Yippy Kai Ayy Motherfu***r!

June 29, 2009  02:51 PM ET

Don't let him be the coach for next year he focuses on defense too much. The devils showed that they have a lot of offensive weapons last year under a offensive system.

June 29, 2009  02:59 PM ET

You make a good point, bgm, but there are other factors at work here. The last time the devils won the Cup, they were barely filling their building. When they opened the Prudential Centre, they could barely fill the building - even on opening night! Why? Because the product is boring and even their own fans don't want to watch it anymore. That's why Sutter was brought in - to put butts back in the seats. And he did. There were more fans in Jersey this year than I have seen in a number of years, from my perspective watching on tv that is. So there lies the question: Fans, or playoff success? Most teams get both with the playoff success, but Jersey's got it backwards, haha.

Wait a minute! I love Nic Cage but can't stand Keenu Reeves. Cage is an amazing actor and Keenu, well............
No void here!

June 29, 2009  06:39 PM ET

Please don't do this. The Devils showed shades of being an exciting team. Let them be exciting!

That's where Chelli's headed - "Gonna git me som' a that silva-screen Gold". I'm guessing, that the Howe that played 'about twenty years after Hartford' reference, must've been referring to Mark Howe ( #2 D-man alltime USA - behind Langway, and just ahead of Leetch - then Laird, Housley, D.Hatcher, Larson, and Chelios, in that order). Marcus was + 400 in the NHL portion of his career, played only 18 games his final season and finally realized he'd blown a tire for sure, and hung 'em up at - 3 for that abbreviated season. He was a cumulative + 181 for his last nine seasons. Chelios had good numbers too, but the difference is, Chris is still actually playing almost exactly the same game that he always did. He is, was, and always will be, a stick man, and clutcher and grabber ( never was a great skater), who plays strong in front of the net - today, all that's a huge liability - and there's no way, he has the talent to change, let alone the desire to, at age 47 and counting. Marcus skated people off the puck, and moved the puck out of his zone better than only a handful or two, of other D-men, alltime. When the legs finally went, so did he.

I think he'd make a heck of a good NHL coach too.
