Club change aids Perry victory

09:11 AM ET 06.29 | During last week's U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, Kenny Perry removed his 3-iron and put a 19?? prototype TaylorMade Raylor rescue club in its place. According to TaylorMade, Perry used the club successfully out of the rough from 220 yards out on the 10th hole to reach the green and make a birdie. Company reps said that because Perry's angle of attack is shallow, he often has trouble hitting longer clubs from deep rough, but the Raylor's V-shape sole design helped him a lot. At the TPC River Highlands outside Hartford, where the rough was less severe than at Bethpage Black, Perry put his 3-iron back in the bag, but used a 22?? Raylor instead of his 5-wood.

This story is pathetic

No, it's not. If a guy like that can change maybe you should consider it. What did he earn, a million? How was your weekend?

Did you even read the article? It was an infomercial for the Taylormade Raylor club, not an article. What are you talking about?

that club should be illegal, if perry can't do what the rest of the PGA golfers can, perry should join the seniors tour of the LPGA instead

The biggest reason he won is simple, he putted "lights out"!

Amen. And it's not like they were all kick in birdies either. He made a lot of long putts.

Still a non-story. This old tub o' lard had the Masters in his hands and choked big time on 17th, 18th and on the second playoff hole (losing to an equally out of shape Cabrera). Winning the Nowhere Open, the Whatever Classic or the Whocares Invitational doesn't make up for it.

His accountant might disagree with you on that one.....

Of course he might. Except I don't judge the value of an athlete by how much money he or she makes. I go by the number of championships won and in golf and tennis, that means the majors.

Agreed. There are way too many athletes that are paid way more than they're worth. However, Kenny has won 14 golf tournaments, and that's an accomplishment whether they're majors or not. Painful to watch the Masters this year. He won the tournament on the 16th hole, after that all he could do was lose it. And he did.

EVERYONE should take their 3-iron out of their back and replace it with a hybrid. Hybrids are the way to go. They are so much easier to hit.

In the words of Lee Trevino: Only God can hit a 1-iron.

... and very few of us can hit a 3-iron... lol

Granted he did win those 14 tournaments and very few pros have won more. I guess that puts him high on the list of good golfers that never won a major, along with Monty, Sergio, K J Choi and Stewart Cink.

I never had good success with fairway woods, so started playing a 3 iron a lot, and I've gotten pretty good with it but that's from a fairway. In the rough, unless you're a steelworker, you can get no good distance and control is a question mark. Now, I keep the 3 in my bag next to the hybrid.
