Casting a degree of doubt on Yao Ming's immediate and long-term NBA future, the fracture in his left foot has worsened and could be severe enough to threaten his entire next season or even his career, depending on the success of potential treatments he could choose.

There's more to life than basketball. Hang it up now! I mean how many surgeries can one endure just to play a sport... Health first, money second... everything else can be put on the side.

He has enough money - but he does have Chinese basketball on his shoulders, he is like an ambassador, if it does come to him leaving the game it will be a huge loss.

Just like many other millions of dollars invested into basketball players - injury is always a risk.

Every time probably has one significant injury to a significant player every year. Just thinking about all the former/current all stars most of them have spent time out recovering from big injuries.

* team not time

He can thank Chinese Basketball for ruining his career... perhaps if they let him get some rest once in a while he wouldn't be so broken down.

Yuup, the Chinese government control Yao too much. Yao has to work double time and he has to make China a priority everytime. He always puts the Rocket at the bottom of the list. Yao and China don't care about the Rockets. Even if Houston makes it to the playoffs, Yao will always have to sit out just to rest his body and injury for China.

He's become the Bill Walton of our generation.

I won't disagree-
but big guys are simply too big
- that's why, on the average, they typically don't last long
and why bigs once injured...need to be trated with kid gloves
and have their minutes monitored VERY closely-

This is a tragety to Basketball. Losing a great player who's time should not have come takes away from the game.

All the best Yao!

I bet Tracy McGrady will get blamed for this, too.
nevertheless, I hope this isn't true.

I don't doubt he received growth hormones in China. As a result, he is unnaturally big, and his feet weren't designed to hold that big of a specimen.

Remember Yao has to give HALF his NBA salary to the Chinese Govt.

exactly, these sheeple here don't understand that china is still communist. he's an obligated talented ball-slave to their country/people...he really has no choice but to do their bidding.

This is bad for the rockets you have to guys hurt (T-Mac and Yao) how do you sway Ron to stay with the team now?

June 30, 2009  03:06 PM ET

We may have lost the 2nd or 3rd best center in the league.

June 30, 2009  03:25 PM ET

bummer...I hope it's not career ending.

June 30, 2009  03:38 PM ET

Why didn't he sign an extension before having the doctors check his broken leg? What the hell? Houston woulda been more screwed...just the way I like it...

Maybe but he was never there when the team needed him the most. Most of the time the Chinese government tells him to shut it down so that he can play for China in the summer time.

June 30, 2009  04:00 PM ET

Yao is a waste of talent. The NBA and especially the Rockets got cheated out of the deal. The Chinese government controlled him and he could have done more for Houston but he was held hostage by China. He was overworked and he didn't have time to actually recover and rest for the NBA.

June 30, 2009  05:25 PM ET

That makes Houston's future in doubt.
