Warriors double-crossed Suns

We suspect that Suns General Manager Steve Kerr was double-crossed by Golden State's Don Nelson on draft day. As you know by now, the Suns evidently believed they had an arrangement with the Warriors that would have sent Amar'e Stoudemire to Golden State for a package of players and Stephen Curry, whom the Warriors selected with the seventh pick in the draft. Only the Warriors hadn't anticipated Curry falling into their laps. When he did, the deal went Kerr-boom. We aren't alone in this thinking, either. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, a dependable long-time NBA and Warriors observer, wrote in his blog: "Nelson's reputation on these matters precedes him, and this perceived 11th-hour pullout only adds to the sense that the Warriors with Nelson are extremely difficult trade partners, and possibly borderline untrustworthy in these matters." It's clear, though, that the Suns are willing to part with Stoudemire - maybe even to the Warriors.

C'mon Kerr... get over it already... it's normal for people to change their minds when things change. If ur really mad just find another taker for Stoudemire as I belive the package is still good with or without Curry.

why trade for someone who fell into their lap?

June 30, 2009  07:49 AM ET

Steve Kerr is a push-over.

This team was at the top of World when they upset Dallas - times have changed.

This shows that Kerr is still a rookie at GM position. Kerr is confuse and his decision making continue to go down. They already helped Cleveland w/ the Shaq deal and they almost helped out GS w/ the Amare deal. Kerr is whining on a deal that almost showed how stupid he is if it went through. How many boneheaded decision does he have to make until the owner finds out that he has no brain. OOOppps, I forgot the owner is part of this crap. Kerr and Sarver are using the same brain.

I don't see how anyone in pheonix can be mad over this. Would they have been mad/surprised if (and this is obvioulsy a stretch) Griffin fell and then the Warriors didn't wanna trade? They got a far higher value guy then they expected, and maybe the one upper teir pick that really fits his style, and they wanted to keep him... Get over it

June 30, 2009  08:27 AM ET

Come on Kerr...if you'd been in Nelson's position, you would have done the same thing. This is a business and not a "Boy Scout outting."

June 30, 2009  08:27 AM ET

curry is more valueable than amare. at least he is not blind.

June 30, 2009  08:34 AM ET

This is very typical. Nelson has a history of saying one thing and doing the other. You can't trust Nellie at all. Also, I don't think Curry is more valuable than Stoudemire at all. Scoring guards are much easier to find than a 6'9"or 10" athletic big man who now can make a jump shot and make foul shots. If Phoenix does trade Stoudemire, they should tank the season and get Nash's replacement at the point in John Wall in next year's draft (this guy is a stud).

lol...how int he world can you say that ?

and amare is a 20- 8/10 guy.

Come on- fair is fair-
How do yuo KNOW curry is going to ever be a player in the league

A deal is not a deal until there is a deal...first rule of business.

So is this like those situations where you tell your best friend you'll give him a million dollars if you win the lottery? Cause you NEVER expect to win it anyway?

June 30, 2009  09:24 AM ET

No deal is done until the [paperwork is complete ... Maybe they never anticipated that Curry would be there ... at this level you keep all your options open UNTIL you are ready to commit ... they want to dump Amare ... do the deal that's BEST FOR YOU ... that's what Golden State is doing ...

Don Nelson outsmarting Steve Kerr - that's unthinkable!!

you ever heard the old saying? don't mess withe DON

June 30, 2009  10:07 AM ET

Kerr continues his road to blowing up a winning franchise... This guy has no business running a team, he's gotten schooled on every trade/decision he's made.

June 30, 2009  10:15 AM ET

I guess I am not sure what the story is here. Teams in every sport routinely have second thoughts and pull out of trades to which they verbally agreed earlier. While making a habit of backing out of deals may earn the reputation of being tough to trade with, I don't see how Nelson is a villain in this particular non-trade. The only problem with the whole situation is the whining about it after the fact considering how common this practice is throughout all of the major sports.

June 30, 2009  10:21 AM ET

How dumb is Kerr? Don Nelson gets a steal in the draft that was completely unexpected, and Kerr wants him to still follow through with this trade, just because they had a previous understanding? Kerr wants Nelson to screw himself over just because he SAID he'd do a deal?
ALso, what terrible reporting by the Arizona Republic. "we suspect..." and they call it a "double cross" that Nelson didn't follow through on trade talks made before the draft even happened?

June 30, 2009  10:26 AM ET

Kerr would've been stupid for making that trade, but Nelson's a douch e
