Duke making recruiting strides

Duke football has been a punchline almost since the Steve Spurrier days ended two decades ago, but if recruiting means anything at all, coach David Cutcliffe and his staff are changing that. Time was, when the Blue Devils reeled in a three-star rated recruit, it was cause for celebration. This year, in an abrupt turnaround, it's becoming expected. So consider this: Duke now has eight commitments. According to Scout.com, one of those has four stars, and six of the remaining seven have three. Last year, Duke signed 27 players. One had four stars and 10 had three. And in 2008, the 17 signees included two four-star kids and five with three.

The people at Duke will have an orgasm if they ever reel in a 5-star recruit. If Cutcliffe stays a while, that may actually become a reality sooner than we think.

I have finally figured out the picture of Cutliffe. He's reacting to how bad T&R threads stink this time of year.

On a semi-related football note, the ACC is shaping up to be a very interesting conference. No real national superpowers, but a lot of credible teams, and a fairly balanced and competitive conference. No one seems able to pull away and dominate.

If you combine the first two posts you get the answer to the "what is that face Cutcliffe is making in the photo" question.

Good for Duke. There's plenty of talent out there you just gotta recruit your butt off.

Remember when the ACC raided the Big East, and everybody was barking about how they were gonna turn into a power football conference?

I don't follow that conference all that closely (the SEC gives me plenty to follow already) so I may be wrong, but I agree with you - and I don't see the power coming out yet. Since FSU and Miami became average, nobody has stepped up consistently as a force, certainly not on the national scene.

No doubt, just like last year. The ACC top to bottom was the most balanced conference.

Just great Junior. Another ACC team in a BCS bowl game with 4 losses.

Duke better hope Cutcliffe doesn't do to well at Duke. If he starts winning 8 or 9 games a year, he will be a goner.

So you're saying that they should hope to be mediocre in order to keep him? Well, "mediocre" would be an improvement for Blue Devil FB, historically speaking, I suppose.
On the other hand, he might like it there. If he starts winning 8 or 9 games/season, he might OWN the ACC and be worshipped in Durham.
He has had heart troubles in the past, so staying at a school where the expectations aren't too high might be good for him health-wise.

Long live Dangerous Dave. Duke is peeing-their-pants lucky to have him. May he raise the blue Devils up from the dead and eclipse even the accomplishments of Steve Orr.

The ACC should provide some entertaining football in 2009. If I have the chance, I'll attend one or more games.

I suggest attending a Georgia Tech game or two, this year is going to be a good one.

This should be a watershed year for both FSU and Miami. Each program has been quietly amassing the kind of talent that once made them THE most feared teams in the land. Neither will win a National Title this year, but this should mark the year when critics stop using terms like "below average" and "irrelevant" to describe these teams.

Yeah, like star ratings mean something... Heart can't be measured...

Star ratings are important. That is until recruits get to spring practice or fall camp. Then you can take a diarhetic dump on the stars.

Hehehe - at least I used the term "average"...and I agree, both the Noles and the Canes should show serious improvement this year.

EWO, who are you picking in the ACC as divisional champs this year?

June 30, 2009  04:08 PM ET

Many ACC teams are on the rise. Boston College took the huge hit when their best defensive player got cancer, and they've had a couple of recruiting disappointments. The cellar dwellers (Virginia, et al) are cellar dwellers. But Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami, Duke and maybe Maryland and South Carolina all look to be better in 2009 that they were in 2008. Should make for some entertaining football.

South Carolina is in the SEC. You mean North Carolina, by any chance?

I believe, this year, that we will finally have the outcome that "the powers that be" in the ACC envisioned when they expanded the conference. I'm going with Miami and FSU this year. We play each other very early, so either team can survive that potential loss and still reach the ACC Title Game. I think these two teams are ARGUABLY the best in the ACC, right now.

All that being said, I think that Georgia Tech will be a VERY tough out for everyone on their schedule this season. If either of the schools I picked take GT lightly, they're doomed...

Sorry - North Carolina. I realize that "better" for them is not the same as "better" for a top club, but they do look to be improved.

EWO, you are my kind of homer. Your posts may not be the Illiad, but I enjoy reading them.

Why does SI have Virginia Tech as a top 5 team in its preseason rankings?
