Cavs targeting Villanueva

The NBA is changing by the day and, it seems, it always affects the Cavaliers. In a move that was considered shocking in corners Monday, the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to offer young free-agent power forward Charlie Villanueva a qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent. He now will be unrestricted, which makes him significantly easier to sign because the Bucks will not have matching rights. According to sources, Villanueva now will be one of the Cavs' free-agent targets when teams are allowed to speak with them Wednesday.

Charlie Villanueva is a defensive liability and plays like Tim Thomas, Antoine Walker and Donney Marshall... why would a team with championship aspirations want him? Oh well it's the dumb Ferry show in Cleveland.... keep wasting Lebron's years!

this might be a move to give vajero a little push

June 30, 2009  07:21 AM ET

he has the defensive stopping power of Steve Nash. Go ahead and sign him Danny boy.

Orlando are going to give matchup nightmares if they get Turk back - Boston will probably be the most consistant defensively - who is more of a liablity on Defense BIG Z? or Shaq?

June 30, 2009  07:48 AM ET

Due to the Orlando series everyone seems to forget that the Cavs were the best defensive team in the league in most stat catagories. They did that with players like Z, Wally, Mo Williams, and Daniel Gibson playing significant minutes. All of those players are known for either not playing D or playing bad D. Point is the system the Cavs run should make Charlie V. at least an average to respectable defender. He has the tools, he long, he runs well, etc . . . The Cavs problem with D vs. Orlando(LA would have caused the same problems) wasn't the defensive system it was size and athletic ability.

PF is the biggest potential problem for the Cavs. If they don't resign Andy they have nobody at the position. The mid-level for a 16 and 7 24yr old PF is not a bad deal. Is he ideal, probably not, but he may be the best they can realistically expect to get.

If Cleveland can get him for a cheap price then he will be worth the money. He can help spread the floor when Shaq is at the low post. He has height compared to what Cleveland had w/ the very small guards that they had.

First I thought it was Gilbert's cheap, now I hear its Ferry...dude you have such a New York **** for Lebron its aint even funny, and he ain't going there anyway. As if Mike D'Antoni and Donnie (Reggie Miller) Walsh ever won anything...

Wonder if the Knickerbockers have a shot this year...

June 30, 2009  08:38 AM ET

And I dont like Villanueva. Though his game is different, he seems too much like that scrub Gooden we just got rid of. We need to go after Boozer...

Boozer would be good but it will be crowded at the low post and Boozer will be very expensive.

I like Villanueva bc he is long and athletic. Marcusjj made a great point about the defennsive system too. Mo Williams went from one of the worst defenders in the league with the Bucks to an average defender in the league last year bc of the system. Villanueva has tons of room to get better and he will get much easier shots with Lebron then he did in Milwaukee. I also think he will be much more motivated in Cleveland to work harder.

Bottom Line: He will help us guard Orlando (Rashard Lewis) and LA (Odom if he resigns) better. Also if we play the Celtics, he will keep KG from just sitting in the paint to annoy Lebron when he drives. Let's be honest you really don't have to guard Varejao and KG knew that. Lastly, he will ease some more of the scoring burden from Lebron. He also would be a great fit in 2010 if the Cavs can bring back Lebron and sign Chris Bosh, who the Cavs have already made clear they are targeting. That front court would cause problems.

Sure Boozer is ideal but any Boozer deal is going to be a talent trade not an expiring deal trade.(assuming Boozer even wants to return to Cleveland) The Cavs dont have the talent to trade for Boozer. Boozer to Cle is just not realistic.

Yeah I agree. I think the hope is that with so few teams with space and some not willing to use it, that the market will dictate the mid-level. He is probably worth more but they are probably hoping for a little luck and thats what it will take for this to work.

June 30, 2009  09:28 AM ET

He's be an alright pickup for the Cavs - gives them another scoring threat.

not happening.......
16 & 7 + young + tall = payday

He will sign with Cleveland because he's already made overtures that way. THey can get him for about 7 - 8 mill a year.

Also, this is a great fit for the Cavs. Villanueva will do better in our defensive system, and being around Lebron, Shaq, Mo and Z will mature him into a better team player.

I smell championship...... but, of course, I did last season too.........

Just not convinced someone's out there who is willing to spend the cash. Work with me a little, i'm dreaming some here. His game would fit so nicely with Shaq and LBJ.

FYI. The Cavs are over the cap now so all they can offer is the mid-level exception. Around 5.5mil. They have to hope he will come to CLE for that.

Charlie is absolutely nothing at all like Gooden.
