10:57 AM ET 07.06 | Mike "Fluff" Cowan was on the bag for Tiger Woods's historic 1997 Masters victory, his first major championship, but less than two years later, it was Woods who decided to make a change. He has never said why, and Cowan said he has never asked. There was speculation that Woods was not happy with Cowan's burgeoning public profile, including several endorsements and TV commercials, not to mention Cowan talking about his compensation package in an interview with a national golf magazine. "But I don't know and I never will know," he said. "This happens all the time -- players firing caddies. He never said 'You did this' or 'You did that.'"

Its because Tiger is a media hog who HAS TO CONTROL 100% of his surroundings or he won't be a part of it...remember, the time that his caddie wanted to wear shorts but the Tour wouldn't allow it..so big baby Tiger threatened to go to Asian tours? Sure wish he had..then my kid wouldn't have to listen to his 4 letter expletives when we tune into golf...

Bravo jimcpa! I can't stand tiggy. Cry baby. Sore loser. Media ****. Me! Me! Me!

July 17, 2007  11:09 PM ET

To jimcpa,

What planet are you from? You probably think Tiger is bad for golf. Why, because he has control over his environment, don't you? How do you explain all the things Tiger does to give back to the game? People like you shouldn't be allowed to think, you might hurt yourself.

Mr Woods, thinks he is the best, which we are finding out is not true !! He acts like a baby when he does not get his own way, and the caddy just happen to be in his line of site when he had his temper flare up. Mr Woods needs to be more humble and he might see it will help his game and make his fans return

December 15, 2008  01:39 PM ET

mr.pj are you an absolute idiot? Tiger wins almost 50% of the time that he plays and almost never misses a cut. He won a major tournament with a fractured leg. Any other player would have withdrawn from the tournament. So please tell me when "we" supposedly found out that he isn't the best? Finally, he may have lost you as a fan, but considering your ignorance that's understandable.

Worked at TPC Scottsdale and the Riviera Country Club as an assistant golf pro and had the chance to meet Tiger and Phil many times. Phil is very nice, pleasant, polite and has a very interesting great personality. He is always good with the staff and is also a good tipper. Tiger never signs autographs, doesn't make eye contact and never says hi or talks to anyone. He is basically rude.

Tiger Woods is the best player in the History of Golf! No doubt. I sometimes thinks he loses on purpose just to shut y'all haters up and let one of your boys win one now and then.

I think he fired this guy because he is simply too old, but u can't fire ne1 4 that nowadays, so it was done by the books. U can't run all the #'s so smoothly nor fast enough when you're older, so he hired a new caddy/mathmatician etc etc.

December 15, 2008  01:52 PM ET

I was at Riviera CC for the LA Open during a practice round and was waiting for Tiger to leave a bunker on #10 to sign a card I had of his. Mike Cowan was signing little kids autographs and I was 'last' in the line (not wanting his autograph but waiting for Tiger.

Tiger was out of balls in the trap and said "Hey Fluff" to get some more practice balls and Fluff said "just a minute" and signed my card... and Tiger did NOT look happy.

The next week Mike Cowan wasn't on Tigers bag..

So it was cause of me!

I guess you what you mean by "y'all haters" are the white people who make up most of the golfing audiences and buyers of the products he endorses. And when you say he lets one of "your boys" win, you mean he throws some tournaments so white players can actually win once in awhile and we won't "be hatin'" on Tiger.

Try this on for size. When you say, he fired his caddy "because he is simply too old, but you can't fire ne1 r that nowadays," you act like it's okay to discriminate against older people and trump up reasons for firing them. Try substituting "black" for "simply too old" and see how you like your statement now?

Who's really the "hater" here?

I agree with everything you said....almost. Just because the person you quoted used some sort of idiotic slang, I think you presumed he was black and on the attack of white people. Try this on for size. Maybe he's just a moron. Maybe race has nothing to do with it. What a thought!!!!! He may be "hater" but you need to put your race card back in your pocket and play it when it actually is required.

In response to the article, I too, believe Tiger to be a bit babyish. But, as with the rest of us, it isn't required that a reason for dismissal is needed. I'm sure Fluff will be just fine.

December 15, 2008  03:13 PM ET

How exciting has golf been this year with Tiger out for most of it?

I don't know him, nor will I probably ever meet the guy. He is one of the greatest golfers yet to be seen in the game. He has increased the popularity of the game and therefore has increased the prize monies. As you may know, the PGA is probably the largest charitable contributor of any professional sports in the world. In 2007 $123 million was donated by PGA tournaments! If it weren't for Tiger and the excitement of the game, charities would miss out. Not everyone can be everything to everybody. Phil is a nice guy and all, but he's not the consistent golfer that Tiger is. So get off his back, he's a golfer and an athlete, not a spokesperson for Nice-Guy Inc.

As far as Fluff goes, if he wanted to know why, he should have asked.

yes there are plenty of white people who talk like morons, so angrylawyer should not have been so quick to bring race into this. people need to start looking beyond skin color. it's ridiculous how quickly it gets brought up in an otherwise unrelated subject.

December 15, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Youre all a bunch of F#&$ING morons...Tiger IS the greatest player ever to walk 18, and whether you are young, old, white, black, male or female, you have to acknowledge the FACT. Furthermore, I am a 31 yr old white male in Augusta, Georgia, home of The Masters AND some real idiotic white people that think "blacks" like Tiger, Obama, and their supporters are uppity and dont deserve anything ever, angrylawyer being a prime example, and some black people who are just as narrow-minded and think that everything is always about race. Both are wrong, because nothing is absolute. Who the F#%$ cares if Tiger hires/fires a new caddy everyday? It's his money, what difference does it make to you? If he is a media hog, as one person commented below, what do you care? He is a star, and they get the spotlight, end of story. No matter why he fired Cowan, it's nobody's business but his and Tiger's, so drop it. This, like every other story, is about jealously of Tiger, and because he typically beats your favorite player, you have to look for reasons to criticize him, like calling him a baby. I doubt anyone on this page is nearly as passionate about anything as Tiger is about golf, so try and dispute that. I doubt any of you would handle the relentless exposure which he endures nearly as well, but then again, he knew that was part of the deal and accepted it, so its his burden to bear, and the point should be moot.

December 15, 2008  06:01 PM ET

Hey, to hell wit all the logic and niceties. We still talkin' sports, ain't we? Then let's have some more name callin' and race insults -- like at the bottom o da pile-up. Yeah . . . !

If some o' those supposed gentlemenly golfers didn't spend so much time makin' nice and signin' autographs, maybe they'd be clockin victories like Tiger . . . And, even if Woods was "nicer," they'd criticise him for tryin' to be 'too perfect,' which is exactly what they said about Arthur Ashe!
My advice to Tiger: Keep givin' all dem haters the finger on your stroll to the Winner's Circle, Bro! And after you collect yo check, tell 'em all to kiss yo Black ****--especially Michelle-son!

I can appreciate someone with an opinion and the willingness and desire to express it. But a few of you people (whatta ya mean, "you people????) are somewhat frightening. It sounds like some of you are living vicariously through Woods in order to compensate for your own shortcomings. Take it easy will ya? You???re going to bust a grape! Woods is an athlete. When done so professionally, the athlete becomes an entertainer. If Woods pissed me off personally, I???d likely speak with the same heat and passion that some of you have done here. I don???t know him any more than most of you do. Many entertainers are renowned for obliterating fan???s adoration with self centered rudeness. Most great ones realize that without fans they are absolutely nothing. I enjoy tournaments more when Woods is playing I admit, but I could care less if I ever met him. I doubt that we would have much to talk about. I have no inkling of what that kind of money does to one???s character with regard to interacting with ???common folk.??? I would be quite impressed if he turned out to be ???cool??? but I am satisfactorily content to leave him in the box. That way I won???t hurt his feelings if I get tired of his company and decide to switch to UFC for more classy entertainment.

GTYJ2008,

Don't put words in my mouth and make assumptions about which you know nothing - for instance, my ethnicity. Keep in mind I'm a lawyer and I'll argue anything - for a fee. You say, "Who the **** cares if Tiger hires/fires a new caddy...?" The federal government cares if it's because the caddy is too old. That's against the law - just the same as if he fired someone because of their gender, race, or nationality. Hokaaah wanted to justify firing someone because of their age. Everybody seems to want to ignore that point because I'm dead on right.

As far as your first line, I would submit that it is you who are the moron. I'd argue that one pro bono. (Look it up if you don't know what it means.)

December 16, 2008  08:18 AM ET

AN ANGRY LAWYER IS THE LAST LAWYER I WOULD WANT TO HIRE BECAUSE HIS EMOTIONS RULE HIS HEAD.

AND,YES MR ANGRYLAWYER,YOU DID ASSUME THAT HOKAAH MUST BE BLACK.IT IS QUITE REVEALING THAT IN YOUR RESPONSE TO GTYJ2008,YOU DID NOT ADDRESS HIS STATEMENT ABOUT RACE AND WENT ON THE OFFENCE INSTEAD.WHAT A SORRY EXPRESSION AND INDEED AN INDICTMENT ON THE LAW PROFESSION TO HAVE SOMEONE AS VACUOUS AS YOU TO UPHOLD THE NATIONS LAWS.

OH,BTW,PRO BONO WORK IS USUALLY EMBRACED AS HONORABLE AND DIGNIFIED WORK,ALBEIT FOR FREE.FOR YOU TO INVOKE ITS PRESENCE AS PART OF YOUR INANE COMMENTS SPEAKS VOLUMES OF THE CALIBRE OF LAWYER YOU ARE......

MOREOVER,JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN ARGUE FOR A FEE DOES NOT MAKETH YOU A LAWYER.SIR,I MEAN A REAL LAWYER THAT BELIEVES IN THE SACRED LAWS OF THIS MIGHTY LAND.NOT ONE WHO, BECAUSE OF GREED,GNAWS AT THE VERY FABRIC OF OUR DECENCY,INTEGRITY AND HONOR.

PLEASE HONOR US AND ALL YOUR OBLIVIOUS CLIENTS BY GOING FOR THERAPY AND THEN HOPEFULLY CONSIDER CHANGING YOUR PROFESSION.

December 16, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Angrylawyer you are an idiot..please ****. Ooooh the federal gov't cares blah blah blah..God you sound like a kid trying to act smarter than everybody else because you can throw your law knowledge at everyone. Just save everybody some headaches and put a sock in it.

December 16, 2008  09:22 AM ET

and my **** were shut up but in not such nice terms

December 16, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Everyone on this page is a bunch of sissies for watching and arguing over such a sissy game such as golf. Who in their right mind could call golf a sport? Football, UFC, Baseball, Rugby, Powerlifting, etc., that's a sport. Golf is a recreation, kind of like quilting is to little old ladies.
As far as the race issue goes, I don't care who you are, how much money you make ( or don't make), what you're job is, what color you are, you're actions speek for themselves. Character is more important than skin color. You can say that blacks are ignorant, you can say whites are ignorant. Truth is, that there are plenty of both. If any of you are well educated or religious, then the race card should never be brought up. If it is, then that shows your ignorance, and lack of character. When it comes to respect, if you give it then you get it. It doesn't matter if you are the star or the hired help, ever person no matter what the job entails should be given the proper amount of respect deserved. Without the little indians the chiefs would be nothing.
