Brewers, D-Backs talking trade

The Diamondbacks and Brewers have engaged in trade discussions, according to reports out of Milwaukee on Sunday. Brewers Assistant General Manager Gord Ash wasn't specific on which players the teams have discussed, but Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis and Felipe Lopez are two names that would make sense logically.

Yawn. Who the heck are these guys?

June 30, 2009  11:04 AM ET

big deal. both guys are decent role players, but hardly the deal the brew crew need to repeat last years run to the playoffs. kind of a letdown after trading for CC last year.

Agreed. Davis is serviceable but if they really wanted an impact pitcher from the Dbacks they'd go after Haren.

Dealing for Davis and Lopez makes sense to me. The cost shouldn't be that high and they fill immediate needs for the Brewers.

Davis is a solid starting pitching who can pitch up Manny Parra's spot. Lopez is a 2B who can get on base and solidify the infield.

Plus, if they pick up Lopez, that could free them up to trade Hardy. Otherwise they would be taking a great gamble by trying to play out the season with McGahee (sic), Escobar (rookie), and Gamel (rookie) at 2B, SS, and 3B. Hardy is one of the few Brewers that is both expendable and has value.

CC was available because he was in the last year of his contract and wasn't coming back to the Indians whether they traded him or not. Dan is not available because he is not in the last year of his contract and he will be back in future years and although they suck now, I don't think the D'backs are intending on giving up the next four years.

When you talk hypothetical trades try to have some sense. Talk about Peavy or any number of pitchers better than Doug Davis who could *possibly* be available. But if you just want to be absurd we'll give you Ojeda for Fielder and Braun ... oh, we'll even throw in Eric Byrnes but you have to pay his $10M a year.

i hate how people are ready to dump hardy for escobar, an unproven rookie. hardy, yes, is struggling, but last a 4 for 4 night and possibly the start of some hitting. he is very streaky, so it may be the start of a hot streak.

i'm not ready to trade jj and bring up an unproven rookie when we already have that with gamel at 3rd.

I think Peavy would be a bad pickup for Milwaukee. He's owned a minimum of $52M over 2010-2012. I don't think he's a lock to pitch well enough to earn that. He has an ERA of 3.97 this year, pitching in Petco. He's at least 3-4 weeks away from coming off of the DL. Who knows how effective he will be then.

Peavy's the kind of contract that would sink the Brewers if he doesn't pitch up to it. It would tie up a good proportion of their payroll.

I brought up Hardy because if the Brewers want to trade for a serious player, they don't have much to offer if they are protecting Hardy, Escobar, and Gamel. Brewer fans like to think that Corey Hart has considerable trade value, but I don't think so. He's a fairly average major league corner outfielder, who isn't showing any improvement.

The Brewers have too many players that have little trade value. Weeks? Injured. Hall? bust. Hart? mid-level value. Cameron? some value to the right team but probably more value to Brewers. Suppan? low value innings eater.

Seems to me that if they want to add a significant player, then they are going to need to offer players like Hardy, Hart, and maybe Parra, and go with Escobar at SS. Otherwise all they can do is pick up a role player and hope the present roster can do the job. Their present situation is a consequence of having trading two of their best prospects for Sabathia last season, thus decreasing the total amount of talent in their organization.

I hope the Brewers do get Lopez and trade hardy.

danny haren is under for a few more years, not too mention, ridiculously underpaid for how good he is(comparatively to other pitchers contracts, its hard to say anyone making that much is "underpaid"). there is no way the dbacks part with him under ANY circumstances this year.

doug davis despite having only 3 wins this year, has a 3.28 era, with a very decent k per inning ratio(on pace to eclipse 150 for the year). also, he has history with the brewers. he won over 10 games for them 3 years in a row(when the had a fraction of the offensive firepower that they have today), and even broke 200k's for them in 05. i think davis would continue being a serviceable pitcher if traded to the brewers and would come at a reasonable price.

Davis and Lopez make perfect sense for the Brew Crew. They're cheap, safe bets to help their team win the Central now. Cubs are doing horrible so the Cards would be their biggest threat but I think trading a good prospect or 2 solid prospects for Davis and Lopez would help them win the division. It's one of those deals that would help both teams.
