FSU won't back off sanctions appeal

Florida State president T.K. Wetherell wouldn't be surprised, provided the school won its appeal of a vacating wins sanction, if the NCAA deducted more scholarships from the university as part of an academic-misconduct case that first surfaced nearly two years ago. The NCAA Committee on Infractions only slightly added to the deductions previously imposed by FSU that included five scholarship losses over two academic years for football. FSU stands to lose victories in 10 sports over the 2006 fall, 2007 spring and 2007 fall semesters in the case that involved 61 student-athletes and three former employees.

Very frsustrating to see the program decline so much. Hopefully Jimbo can right the ship and bring them back after Coach Bowden steps down

ENOUGH!!! We tried to make our case for not forfeiting wins, and our efforts were unsuccessful. Now, this has gone TOO FAR! A reduction in FUTURE scholarships in an effort to hang on to PAST victories is unacceptable and unwise. Coach Bowden, and the FSU community at large, need to accept not only the fact that Coach Bowden will not earn the career wins record, but, more importantly, that the FUTURE of the program is what HAS to matter most!

I have defended Coach Bowden and my beloved FSU on these boards MANY times, but this time, I can not. I will ALWAYS bleed Garnet and Gold, and I will always be grateful to Coach Bowden for taking FSU football to the top of the mountain. However, NOBODY is bigger than the program...not even Coach Bowden.

Well said. If it were the Vols, I would feel the same way-- let the wins be vacated, don't risk any more scholarship reductions, and move on.

Why in the f*** would a program be willing to sacrifice future scholarships to preserve past wins? Maybe if you were talking about forfeiting a national championship, OK, but otherwise, what in the hell are you smoking to even consider it?

Am I missing something?

June 30, 2009  01:01 PM ET

EWO, good to see you, where ya been hiding yourself?

I agree, mortgaging future schollies to keep BB's win total from dropping is not the right thing to do.

No, you are not. It is the folks at my alma mater who are "missing something."

This is madness.

Nope, you're not missing anything. TK is making FSU look worse with all this, and the program is suffering needlessly here. EWO made a terrific post on this, couldn't have been better put.

Tell it, EWO.

Are TK and the "powers that be" fighting for the other athletic teams involved in the cheating scandal? Or are they only interested in preserving the wins of Saint Bobby and his boys? If that were the case, and if I were a Nole student, Nole alum, or a prospective Nole, I'd feel pretty let down to know that political interests lie only in the fate of one man, and not the Seminole athletic department, as a whole. What TK is trying to do essentially devalues the other Seminole athletic teams involved in the scandal. And it appears that he is trying to jeopardize the future of some potentially deserving student athletes who could benefit from these scholarships.

I stand and applaud you. A fan who puts integrity before team and at FSU a legend. More power to you.

Wow. My hat's off to you. I've been saying that for more than 20 years but to hear it from a FSU loyalist is almost startling. You deserve credit for your honesty and objectivity.

What I've always said is the same .... it's always about Bowden, it's always been about HIM. Not the players, not the program, not the fans, but about Bobby Bowden. His actions, but certainly not talk, have revealed that over the years, whether through disciplinary issues or other aspects of running the program. He has some good qualities, sure, and he's likable. But I've never been able to stand him much for those reasons ... say one thing, do something else ... all to his personal benefit.

The only question left is how long he will continue to look foolish and embarrass the University that was so much better to him than he has been to it.

they are willing to forfiet the future because both bowden and the president or is it the athletic director are about to leave so they want to protect their legacy even at the cost of the future. that should tell you all you need to know. they care about themselves more then who the represent. those who are staying should revolt. at this point who cares about the past. Bobby, let it go for the good of the school.

Also, ditto on post #13.

It's hard for me to criticize Bowden. Just look at what he has done for that program. I live in Tally, married a Tally girl and completely understand the fans being impatient about the "average" teams of late. There has been some drop off lately but the bar was set so high. 13 Straight years of finishing #4 or better in the nation is absolutely incredible.

With Florida's success the fan base is anxious for change. I think the Noles will be very much improved this year, possibly winning the ACC. I also think this will be Bobby Bowden's last year.

If you had read this article correctly, it states what he believes the ncaa will do if FSU wins their appeal. FSU had already done more than most schools ever would have when they first found out about this. They reported it to the ncaa and the ncaa came back saying FSU did a very good job, etc. The problem here is not the wins for football or whatever, it is how much power the ncaa has and that they don't like anybody challenging what they impose. Is it right that any coach or school should lose wins or championships because a TA decided to give extra help, (cheating!), to students and that the students were so stupid as to accept it and even help! They were flunked, suspended from playing for a bunch of games in all sports and the people involved were fired. FSU took charge and handle it to the best of their ability considering the circumstances. If this had happened and let me say it could happen anywhere, those schools would fight and so would the fans. Do you really believe that if this had have happened at psu (and they have had many problems), that they would not have fought for JoePa! Give me a break. Same with other schools. If you went to Viriginia Tech and won a championship are you telling me you wouldn't fight to keep it. I think FSU is doing more than people know. They are saying to the ncaa and other schools, enough is enough when it comes to these sanctions that the ncaa imposes. The punishment needs to fit the violation. I know there are a lot of you that do not care for FSU and Bowden and why, is a puzzlement. Remember Marshall and the football team they lost to a plane crash. It was Bowden who helped them get back on their feet when he was at W. Virg. Too many coaches are held responsible for the actions of a player or players when they get into trouble. These kids need to grow up and take responsibilities. I know this man and he is honorable. Remember that, Martin in baseball is another one that gets shafted! Along with a track and field championship team. Is it right that those runners, etc. should have to give up their title? I don't believe so. For the one who bleeds Garnet and Gold, get a transfusion so you can get your spark back. I was there long before Bowden, when we weren't the big by in town. We actually played JoePa in the Gator and wound up with a tie! Bowden has done a ton for this university and deserves better. You better hope they don't find anything wrong at FLA over the past few years or they will have to give up their championships for all sorts of sports. Wouldn't like it would you. So you better hope FSU wins so that the ncaa can't come and say we don't like you, so we are going to find something wrong with you. They have eyes and ears everywhere. Be careful for what you wish for, because many times it comes back to bite you in the @#$...!!

King - love your town! It's my unofficial "halfway point" between home and West Palm where we vacation sometimes with extended family. Drive all day, stop and eat/party in Tally, sleep in and finish the trip to W. Palm at a liesurely (hungover) pace. We learned this routine years ago!

I'm an FSU fan with a lot of respect for Bowden and I'm hoping for good things this year. Would also like to see Nebraska and Miami return to prominence.

Dead coach walking, move over. Is Koby bigger than the Lakers? Is Bobby bigger than the Seminoles?
