Cavs to spend big on free agents

It seems the Cavs are expected to act quickly to add to their already well-heeled roster in an attempt to win their first title next season, which is famously the last on LeBron James' contract. They are going to make their pitch and look to spend about as much as the league rules will allow them, within reason. It is believed the Cavs top choices are forwards they can pair with Shaquille O'Neal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a developing J.J. Hickson and, if things work out, a re-signed Anderson Varejao. Those include Charlie Villanueva, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess, players who can stretch the floor when it compacts on the Cavs' current All-Stars.

Can you imagine the Cavs with Zydrunas and a Sheed/ McDyess combination. Talk about big guys who can step out and hit the jump shot, and open the floor for Lebron. This type of player makes much more sense than Shaq in cle

Yea I can completely imagine they would get ripped inside by Orlando again... As for openning the floor for Lebron, If the floor was anymore open Iverson's fat wife could hangout in it

False, Sheed OWNS Dwight. Ask Orlando their record against Detroit in the past few years..

I seem to recall them landing a guy by the name of Shaq who has historically clogged up the middle fairly well...

Great news for Cavs fans - Cleveland is going to spend big on free agents in a year when the free agent pool is extremely weak!

orlando messed up with that Carter trade. the cavs match up better now that they have shaq. plus they can't resign hedo. thats was a panic move 2 sigh carter. and they will c next season

Who ends up guarding VC late in the game??? VC is more of a finisher that Hedo isn't. The only thing HT has on VC is 4 inches. Orlando is a better team but Cavs shouldve went for shaq last year. Shaq will get his but I dont see how Cleveland has improved themselves. Varejao is a key to that team-Hickson isnt ready to give them that...Charlie might be a good fit with the Cavs...Lets see if they grab him...

CV31 or Rasheed would be a great addition to the Cavs. These guys will help spread the floor w/ their 3 pt shooting. Rasheed may come at a cheaper price which is an advantage.

lebron will check him if he's hot if not D.west will. But i think this trade is gonna hurt in the long run. they lost 2 much 2 get him. and cleveland improved themselves by trading big bum and sasha 4 a all star. u replace bums with a proven star.

July 1, 2009  08:52 AM ET

Rasheed Wallace would be an ideal fit. He can still spread the floor, can shoot, and gives them length to deal with their Orlando problem.

Villanueva wouldn't be bad either but I would target Sheed.

Talk is cheap... Cavs have been yabbing about surrouding Lebron with a championship team for six straight years... this is no different... even with Shaq they can cut their losses next season so they don't have long term investments into star players which should tell Lebron Dan Gilbert will be back to his old tricks once he resigns... if they really mean business I dare Cavs management to absorb Zach Randolph's contract or try to do a sign and trade for Turkoglu, or Amare... Charlie Villanueva and 37 year old Shaq? Puh lease... that's like Ewing with bad knees and Antoine walker running the frontlines... you need young big men with quick feet... Prognosis is the Cavs get knocked out by either Boston, Chicago or Orlando and forget about the NBA finals... that's a pipe dream!

lol...I agree-
look at the names they're spouting.....
McD is 900 years old, sheed is 970 years old
and they already brought in Shaq.....how do any of these 3 help
in the LONG RUN- when you have LBJ there for another DECADE ?

and CV is UNATTAINABLE cause they don't have the $$ to do it

Ferry is a MORON

Comments 11 and 12 have me smiling because I know the intent behind them. We got a year to go before the Summer of LeBron guys, a whole year.

How much longer we going to go with the "Cavs ain't doing enough so I hope he comes to the Knicks" angle guys? How much longer?

Actually you're VERY wrong. My CAVS can try and sign CV at the MLE, which is a ton more than he made last season, and also, Andy has opted out. So if the CAVS can't keep Andy, that gives them more money to work with. They're also trying to get Wally's 13 mil off the table, in a sign and trade. Ferry is smater than you guys think, or give him credit for. LBJ is not going to New York, so stop it already...lol. You guys (Lost Will also), need to be worried about your Knicks. Because if Walsh let's Lee go, than he's the MORON!

Look my Knicks are realistic with expectations...we probably won't make the playoffs next season but it aint like we've had a franchise player for six straight years and surrounded him with garbage players... for the past six years you hear the same Dan Gilbert theme song every July...

We are the world, we are the children of Cleveland
We are the ones who will surround Lebron with a championship team
So lets start spending...

Where is the spending and where is the ring... six years of false promises. It's sad to see an owner struggling to keep a player like VAREJAO... LOL ...Cleveland is a joke!

Look I know you guys have the third highest payroll but your roster is filled with old useless players. Take Lebron out of Cleveland and the Knicks will own the Cavs. The real moron is the puppet GM called Dan I am Scared of Gilbert Ferry!... and your coach? he always looks awestruck like ... what's going on people.. give the ball to Lebron.... he's a witness too :)

When was the last time New York won a ring buddy???? I won't sing any songs, but when you guys did have a solid team, a man named Michael Jordan OWNED you. So don't give me a lecture on being close with no cigar, and if you think New York can offer LBJ something better than Cleveland, when all they've done is put together fake Monstar Teams the past 10 years, you're dreaming!...lol....And like I've said to every person on here, that thinks they know something about basketball, and knows hardly anything; you can say by taking the star off of ANY team in the NBA, they wouldn't be good. How childish is that statement....lol....Trust me, if Michael Jordan played for the Knicks, you all would have 6 rings too.

Of course... Ferry is following Steve Kerr's footsteps... the quest to have the oldest team in the league... only difference is Lebron makes all their bad decisions look good like Jessica Simpson's chest... but reality will strike... they will get knocked out again.. even with an improved team they will need a 'playoffs coach' like Avery or JVG cos Brown is just an opportunist.

And one more thing Lost. If you have arguably the BEST player in the NBA on your team, and his contract is up next year, you might not want to spend all your $, because you want to have some $ left over to maybe uhhhhhhhhhhh try and resign him?????

he ain't coming for a mid-level-
he is worth MORE and he knows it...

I don't love CV- but he is tall, young and was 16 & 7 last year
-ain't NO WAY He's leaving $$ on the table

Honestly Hova-
I KNOW LBJ ain't coming....
that really wasn't my underlying thought
- maybe a Bosh/JJ or Amare.....but not LBJ
and unless Riles totally f's with wades head- not him either
