Pistons, Bulls chasing Gordon

A busy Tuesday for Joe Dumars began with the Pistons' president of basketball operations firing coach Michael Curry and ended with him making overtures for guard Ben Gordon as NBA free agency began at 11:01 p.m. Chicago time. The Bulls planned to contact Raymond Brothers, Gordon's agent, who has turned down offers of $50 million over five years and $54 million over six years the previous two summers. Gordon, the Bulls' leading scorer for the last four seasons, never has backed off his publicly stated desire to remain in Chicago. He reiterated that desire to close associates on Tuesday. Similarly, general manager Gar Forman consistently has said the Bulls want to re-sign Gordon.

As a Pistons fan, I don't know which team I want to win this chase...

I've never seen the thrill with Ben Gordon. Lots of guys in the League can score - it is not that hard of a commodity to find.

Bulls don't want Gordon-Pistons will have a need and money to spend-advantage DETROIT...

July 1, 2009  08:39 AM ET

Gordon could be a very good free agent pick up for Portland if they lose Blake.

July 1, 2009  08:50 AM ET

I just don't get why the Pistons want Ben Gordon. Yes, I know he's a talented scorer but you are going to have one hell of a small back court with Stuckey and Gordon and in my opinion Stuckey is better off as a 2 guard anyway.

Let the Bulls bring back Gordon, and the Pistons can go find a lead guard (Andre Miller, anyone?) that can either move Stuckey to the 2 or to the bench as your 6th man.

seriously.....
do you actually watch basketball ?

he doesn't just 'score'
he scores TWENTY POINTS a night.
- that is a RARITY....I mean he ain't eddie house scoring 8pts
off the bench for you.....he was their LEADING SCORER

Now I wouldn't give him a max deal.....
but for you to poo poo his scoring ability
- especially in CRUNCH time-
is a BIG mistake

Sure, but what position does he play?

Stones already have their combo guard who I believe could be a good scorer if they didnt force him to QB. They have Rip (for now). I just dont see what role Gordon fills in the current lineup.

Obviously, Pistons as we know it are done, so it could all change. I just havent heard the Pistons being willing to deal Stuckey, and I dont know if it makes sense to have Stuckey and Gordon on the same team...

We need PG, and front court. I know we need a scorer too, but we need something to build around first. I just dont see Gordon as the type of player to build around...

Much respect for Ben, he is a very good scorer and part of the reason why he average 20 a game is because he was the 1st scoring option for the Bulls. The only logic to this signing is the Pistons are desperate for a scorer. But in this case, Ben is an undersized scoring guard which doesn't make sense for the Pistons when Rip is basically the same player but less explosive off the dribble. $10mil to $13mil a year for Ben is way to much.

Pistons need help up front big time.

I'm not saying he's a good fit necessarily for the pistons-
I was just saying that he has a unique talent that IS valuable

I also wouldn't give him a 'max' or hughe deal UNLESS the
team is competing NOW for a ring and you need another big time
scorer and have 'no choice'

Yes u are right but he also has glaring weaknesses....he is a streak shooter, doesn't or better said can't play D and is very undersized...25 million for 3 years is the max deal I would give not a penny more....

that's a reasonable contract-
If though he was a 'missing piece' on a veteran team.....
I'd go even a bit higher

I think he'd be GREAT in Denver-
they have bigs to compensate and a big PG already.
and then they could trade JR Smith- who's a punk
& get rid of Jones - who frankly sucks

July 1, 2009  11:21 AM ET

Anyone who is a Bulls fan and actually watches basketball would know why they would want to resign him. If it wasnt for Gordon in the playoffs, the Bulls never would have hung around as long as they did. Yes we all know his defense is lacking but to say you can replace a scorer like that is not wise. You just cant replace his scoring that easily. I dont think he is worth a max deal but they should keep him at this time without having many other options available to them.

July 1, 2009  11:32 AM ET

I like Gordon if we ship out Rip but...

July 1, 2009  12:53 PM ET

wtf is deng and hirich still being a bull trade them and keep gordon get ty lowson to replace a back up rose and gordon

Right on. Besides, the only way I see Ben Gordon as a nice addition in Detroit is as the 6th man. I don't like the idea of overpaying for Gordon off the bench. Plus, as a Piston fan, the only excitement at the end of the season was Will Bynum. Are we going to overpay Ben Gordon to take Will Bynum's spot?

Deng is worth keeping, but not Hinrich.

Gordon deserves to leave the bulls how they've been treating him as far as contracts...the guys not perfect, but he does make big shots and is a baller...

WHAAAAAAAAAAT ??

they offered him a 5 yr 50 mil deal last year...
how in any way is that not fair ?

July 1, 2009  03:49 PM ET

He's their best player, Jgb...He's their clutch player...I think the 60 he wanted was in the right range...meanwhile, they take care of Deng, Hienrich is overpayed, etc...He's their also their leading scorer and they treat the kid like a stepchild...

so you're basically saying a 5 yr 50 mil deal was 'disrespectful' ???

Yes he was their best player, but deng & hinrich's deals are
going to KILL the bulls chances of competing for a ring- unless
they get MOVED
You're willing to tie up 30 Million $$ on Deng, Hinrich & Gordon ?
-yuck-
