D-Backs nix Angels' offer for Haren

Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren would be an ideal fit for a team in need of an elite starting pitcher. But, as the Angels recently discovered, the D-backs do not intend to trade Haren, who leads the National League in ERA. "I almost can't conceive of a package that would motivate us to move him," one Diamondbacks official said. The D-backs, viewing Haren as a critical part of their future, declined to engage in serious discussions with the Angels, who could have used their surplus of catchers and middle infielders to put together a blockbuster offer. The talks could accelerate if the Angels overwhelmed the Diamondbacks with the right combination of players, one source said. But such a deal, for now, appears to be a longshot.

Starting pitching is a luxury in MLB....why would Arizona trade him?

True, especially in light of Webb's troubles. On the other hand...this team sucks hard and will probably be a non-factor for at least 4-5 years. What good is an 'ace' on a team 20 games under .500? Why not move him now and get three or four building blocks for the future?

July 1, 2009  08:44 AM ET

I'd keep him. They already have the ultimate 'building block' in Justin Upton. Theyre struggling bad this season, but ifWebb comes back the DBacks are close to being a team capable of contending. IMO.

No way they should trade this guy. Build around him and Upton. How's JD Drew's little bro doing, anyhow? Stephen, I believe?

July 1, 2009  09:35 AM ET

Glad to see the Angels going after the big guns.

July 1, 2009  09:53 AM ET

even if the angels get him...what are they going to do..go to playoffs and lose in the first round like they always do?

Good point.....but I just can't see them trading their ace.

July 1, 2009  10:34 AM ET

that means Escobar is finished. The Angels are moving on.

July 1, 2009  10:56 AM ET

Escobar has been finished... the way he's up and down... and missing a muscle in his shoulder behind the deltoid that theoretically he needs in order to provide the strength and endurance to pitch a long time... Escobar was a good pitcher... he gave it a shot now it's time to move on...

July 1, 2009  10:57 AM ET

They can have Bedard - he should be ready .......... some day - barring his ass not hurting him on the right cheek tomorrow.
Or his left pinky with that booger stuck to it gets through giving him a bad feeling.

At least they are in the playoffs.

Hopefully they will move him to the pen and he can find a role there.

I'm guessing you haven't even seen Justin Upton play. Yes he IS the ultimate building block. He's 21 years old and will be in the allstar game this year and he has not even tapped his potential. Seriously we're talking about the next Ken Griffey Jr. here in his Seattle days.

Maybe the Angels would offer a package for Webb? Ha!

My reply is a general one...not specific to this article. Of course pitching is a luxury...but if the team has have several holes that needs to plug-up, if they have a surplus of pitchers or the pitcher has an expiring contract, and the team does not expect to re-sign him due to financial reason, ...that would be 3 reasons right there to trade him.

July 1, 2009  11:25 AM ET

They need to keep Haren, he's a legit ace. They have about 1/2 dozen really good young players and the rest of the team are journeymen and cast-offs. If Webb is able to come back to 100% and they can lay their hands on a closer and some good bullpen arms they'll be right there.

Regardless, as long as they kick the sorry ass Texas team, (as they always do) I will be content.

Well I'm not sure I'd call him the ultimate building block but he does have all the tools. Hits for average, hits for power, good speed, and good to great defense. May have Griffey potential for it's a little early to say for sure.

Lol? You don't think Justin Upton is going to be a superstar? He already is starting to adjust to major league pitching at age 21, and he is absolutely raking this year.

.320, 14 hrs, 45 rbis, 49 runs, and 10 sbs. Don't tell me you don't want someone like that on YOUR team (probably the Dodgers)
