Rangers going on spending spree?

Now that the Rangers have created an extra $5.457 million in cap space by sending Scott Gomez to Montreal yesterday in a slam-dunk trade for winger Chris Higgins and blueline prospect Ryan McDonagh, the question is whether Glen Sather will spend it wisely, whether he will keep it in his pocket -- or whether the GM will have a first week of July like the one he had last year. It means that, should they so choose, the Rangers can be players for Minnesota sniper Marian Gaborik; or perhaps for Detroit's Marian Hossa, if he reaches free agency. They might check in on Montreal's impending free-agent defenseman Mike Komisarek, who, like Higgins, hails from Long Island.

I don't think that either Gaborik or Hossa will settle for anything under 6 million.

Yep, this'll work just like the spending spree at the Knicks worked.

Can anyone tell me how in God's name Scott Gomez is making $7.3 mil a year? I mean, obviously he signed the contract, but WOW.

Least he earned his money though, like all those other great players on the Rangers bench.

No overpriced talent on Rangers, no sir.

Ha!

I agree. 6 is the floor for these guys. A team would be better served giving it to the healthy Hossa than to Glass Gaborik, but the latter will want his cash too.

So the Rangers actually made a great trade yesterday to position themselves for the future. But if the extra cap money is burning a hole in Sather's pocket and he goes and overpays Gaborik or Hossa or Komisarek or trades top prospects for Heatley they will be right back where they started. My guess is that Sather will blow the money and thats too bad for the Rangers.

Meanwhile what was Gainey thinking to give up a top prospect AND take that contract back?

Rangers need to dump Rozsival it looks like...

Actually, Now that he's in Montreal his 46% tax kicks in, so he's really only making alitte bit more then half the 7.3 million, so now he's worth it.

July 1, 2009  09:27 AM ET

Sather made a great move, so he has to make about 4 bad ones in a row. This is Glenn Sather after all.

July 1, 2009  09:41 AM ET

He better spend wisely on a sniper and defense. But as well all know he'll sign some big name player just to get fans excited and sell some tix.

July 1, 2009  09:46 AM ET

Haven't they learned, you can't just buy a bunch of players and expect them to be good. They have done this every year, even before the Salary Cap.

July 1, 2009  09:57 AM ET

and the rangers are still going to lose...no matter how much they spend

Look all new york teams buy their players and never win how pathetic

its True..... sad but true.....

isn't there a padded room somewhere that we could put Sather in for the next few weeks of free agency? Take his checkbook and throw him in there until September.

If I'm not mistaken, those two World Series came at a pretty good price, right?
That Stanley Cup replica still in Miami where all 12 of the regular Panthers' fans can see it?
Of course, maybe the Rangers outspend The University of Miami, though probably not by much...unless we include the bail payments, then Miami wins going away.
