Tiger Woods took on Jim Brown in his own, understated way Tuesday, rebutting the football great's criticism that Woods is "terrible" on social issues. Woods, who is hosting the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club, pointed to the Tiger Woods Foundation and its Learning Center, which received the bulk of the charitable proceeds this week. The Foundation's 2008 report claims it has reached an estimated 10 million kids since its inception in 1996, including the awarding of Earl Woods Scholarships. "I think I do a pretty good job as it is, what we're trying to do with the Foundation...how many kids we've helped ...what we're trying to do not just here in the United States, but what my mom's doing in Thailand, all these different things that we've done," Woods said. "And you know, I want to do it right and not just do it, but do it right."

Shocker!! A brother hating on another brother...

Tiger Woods does a good job helping out underpriviledged people with his foundations and charities. While he will never be able to do as much as Jim Brown did for inner city children, Woods is a good model that other athletes should emulate. Tiger could probably do more, but couldn't we all? I think Jim Brown just wants somebody like Tiger who has the ability and resources to do a lot of good, take charge and really focus on helping others like he did.

T think Jim Brown is criticizing tiger because he hasn???t done more to get black players on the tour. Also his foundation doesn???t specifically target underserved communities but his foundation does a lot of good. Social change is what Brown is referring to in his criticism of Tiger. Brown is from a different time and I think the criticism in unfair. Social change today is not what social change was 40 years ago.

if tiger wants to do some charity work maybe he could give me some free lession and help me with my slice

July 1, 2009  09:03 AM ET

Jim Brown needs to get rid of that STUPID hat he wears. Seriously, Tiger doesn't need to answer to JB or any other "community activist". JB needs a hobby!!!!

Tiger does not have to the spokesperson for civil rights. He is just as much Asian as he is black. Race is not really an issue in sports today...it is about results. To T-Sizzle what would he have to do to get more black players on tour? It seems easy to me that all you to do is score well enough to get a pro card and then win enough tournaments to qualify for the bigger tourneys. If you win you go further. I am sure Tiger would love to help all minorities have more access to golf. Heck I would love to have more access. The problem is that it is one of the most expensive sports just to play much less play enough to reach Tiger's abilities. I think it is more of economical issue than a race issue. I wish more black kids would come up in Golf and in Tennis for matter. With the way that they dominate other sports I would love to see how far they could push the bar in Golf and Tennis. I think Tiger despite being vocal on social issues gives all minorities a blueprint to what they could strive to be.

jim brown needs to realize that the late 60's are over.

July 1, 2009  09:27 AM ET

Tiger should address Jim Brown calling him a "mamajamma".

July 1, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Jim Brown is a racist arsewhole. Maybe Tiger should start beating his wife, do a little time in jail and blame whitey for all his issues. Then he could be the same kind of role model Jim is.

July 1, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Did Jim Brown make his comments from outside Michael Jackson's parents home?? Is there room for a 3rd civil rights activist in the driveway?

July 1, 2009  09:37 AM ET

Jim Brown is a racist pig and is just p*i*s*s*e*d Tiger isn't.

July 1, 2009  09:45 AM ET

Over the years, Jim Brown has managed to dilute any credibility he may have had at one time. He's evidently accomplished many things, but has managed to reduce his image to little more than a circus side show ... to an audience on both sides of the race line. I agree with the previous comment "the '60's are over" and so is Mr. Brown. Tiger's navigation of the high road with his handling of the Jim Brown issue further illustrates he's so far above his mouthy detractor, he need not ratify Mr. Brown by engaging him.

July 1, 2009  10:02 AM ET

Interesting. Jim Brown was the Tiger Woods of his day. Probably the best lacrosse player and certainly the top RB. He even made a pretty big splash in Hollywood when black heroes were unusual. But he never became an effective national leader, I think mostly because of his negativity about everything. And think about what Woods has done for the general image of black men in America. He has changed racist attitudes just by being himself. Tiger Woods is the future.

typical JB, why criticize ANYONE, let alone Tiger who is doing ALOT, why not criticize the athletes and other people making millions and doing absolutely nothing!!

July 1, 2009  10:15 AM ET

Jim Brown has always been an angry black man and he can't stand the fact that Tiger Woods seems to be a balanced, well rounded individual and not a hater.

This right here.

July 1, 2009  11:01 AM ET

Tiger Woods has gotten millions of people to get off their tushes and play golf. Kids, adults, seniors, men, women, white, black, hispanic, asian, all races, all genders that is a pretty good way to get people especially kids active and involved both socially and athletically. This country and world has plenty of Al Sharpton's, Jesse JAckson's and Jim Borwn's that scream when something seems unfair. Let Tiger handle things his way, he seems to have done more with less publicity than any of the others beside Dr. Martin Luther King. A very civil and eloquent man himself.

July 1, 2009  11:03 AM ET

I like how Jim Brown is the authority on people and their philanthropical approaches to life... I think one loses that right, when they beat their wife... However, to Mr. Brown, in this era of Mike Vicks, Plaxico's, Stallworths and the new enlistee to this fine group, Brandon Marshall, Tiger is a fine representative and role model to African American youths, as well as any young kid. He does the right thing, says the right thing, and is an excellent ambassador to the game of life. Give it a break and go on criticizing someone else... I hear Bill Gates is kind of greedy with his cash...

Tiger never claimed to be a brother however he does a lot of good work. Jim Brown would like to see him become more vocal on social issues.

Actually, he's more Asian than he is black.
