By the time the Knicks take Jason Kidd on a grand tour of Madison Square Garden Wednesday, Mark Cuban will have already made an offer to keep the veteran point guard in Dallas. Cuban, the Mavs owner, confirmed to The News in an e-mail Tuesday that he planned to meet with Kidd at 12:01 a.m., the official start of the free agent recruiting period. It is believed that the Mavs will offer Kidd a contract starting at $8 million per over two years with an option for a third.

the Mavs NEED Jason Kidd - there just isn't any good alternatives that they can pay unless they do sign and trade etc.

Jose Barea for 82 games starting?

Pretty sad when Dallas thinks that Kidd is still the answer.

They do need JKidd but they also need a low post player. JKidd does make teams better by making players very successful on the court. The problem for the Mavs has always been the lack of low post play and they have never addressed that main problem. JKidd will more likely resign w/ Dallas because they have the most money to offer. The only way JKidd would play for another team is if some team gives him a ridiculous amount of money or he just signs w/ a team just for the sake of getting a ring but w/ minimum pay.

Jason Kidd will be back with the Mavericks. This Knicks meeting is just to force Cuban's hand and so far it has, especially since Mark is currently here talking to J. Kidd.

The Mavs need him, and they can offer him more than the 1 year mid level exception that the Knicks will offer him.

Cuban please take him with you!

He will, Lostwill. He will.

forget the knicks- the chances of him going to NY are ZERO
they have not as much $$$ and they have NO SHOT AT WINNING
this year- so there are no reasons to go

As far as Dallas- lets say they DO resign kidd.....
how does that make them BETTER ?
- all that does is make them tread water....
they STILL need another player to compete in the stacked west

Agree 100 percent. He doesn't make them dramatically better but he's definitely a better option than Barrea who did impress in spots but can he really handle that job as a starter?

welcome back home kidd....dallas here we come

yup- you cannot simply turn your playoff team over to Barrea.
now if he outplays kidd during the year....that's a different story
but to simply hand him the reigns now- no way

Agree. No low post presence means more of the same....dribble penetration and spot up shooting. Yawn. Pass me the remote.

July 1, 2009  10:13 AM ET

Kidd is the perfect essence of a MLE....anything more than that is MORONIC!!!

July 1, 2009  10:15 AM ET

Honestly Cuban is being greedy here. The Mavs won't win the title with their current roster so it doesn't matter if JKidd plays in Dallas or Utah. Kidd is old and will soon be retiring so why don't you leave him alone to enjoy his last days in basketball heaven with his wife and children. Please don't use money to fool the Kidd!

Cuban has to keep Kidd! He has no other option and if he cannot the trade was a total bust!!!

it is a bust

This is because Dallas has NO OTHER good point guards. They don't want Kidd to dominate, just to be efficient.

the key is that Kidd could be a good mentor to Barrea. It is a sad day though when Kidd is the best thing out there for a PG. I say this even though I like Kidd. It's just that I HOPE we have something that is WAY bigger than this deal because we will not compete with the elite teams if we keep primarily the same team as last year. I know there are a lot of days left but I had hoped they would work an angle for a good scoring PG. Of course we need a low post threat the most. It simply can't get much worse than Damp for a team who wants to compete for a ring.

This feels right. Kidd's using NY for leverage. He wouldn't have any interest in playing there if he's serious about contending.

Huh? I get it. You want him to be a Knick. Cool, but why don't you just come out and say that instead of posting this nonsense?
