Cincy coach: Stephenson will play

Mick Cronin already overcame pretty long odds to get Lance Stephenson to commit to Cincinnati, but that doesn't mean the challenges are over. The former Lincoln standout, who signed a financial aid package with the Big East school on Tuesday, still needs to be admitted, get cleared by the NCAA -- which might look into his participation in a documentary -- and go through a misdemeanor sexual assault trial scheduled to begin on July 15. "We've done all our due diligence on the legal issue," Cronin, the Cincinnati coach, said during a conference call yesterday. "Obviously, we felt confident it's going to be resolved. With his amateur status, to my knowledge, we have no issues. We obviously think he's going to be cleared to play or we wouldn't have recruited him."

Coach speak for "the kids too good not to do whatever I can to get him on my team regardless of his character or grades".

That sounds about right. Anyway, I'm just happy this whole saga is over. He picked a school, he's probably going to play and in about a year's time he will be preparing himself for some NBA team Summer League.

Definite one and done. Talent, no interest in school.

I don't normally wish ill upon another person, but I hope he's not as good a player as he thinks he is and somehow doesn't get to the NBA in 1 year. I'm sorry, but this guy just seems terribly full of himself.

I agree. Not wishing bad things for him but I wish kids would stay more than 1 year in college to develop lifeskills and maybe, just maybe, expand their mental capacity before entering the adult world.

Why is it, when we see a kid with great basketball skills but questionable lifeskills, that we assume the best place for him would be to hurry up and get to the NBA?

I remember his Lincoln games on ESPN... He liked to take a lot of ridiculous shots just cause he wasnt double-teamed. Why'd he pick Cincy anyway?

Apparently, this wasn't a hot topic.
