The negotiations to acquire Eric Hinske won't go down as particularly prolific for Brian Cashman. They took just a few days, and with all due respect to Hinske, who appears to be a good fit, this ain't quite David Wells for Roger Clemens on the "Wow!" scale. But this trade should be filed away as a time capsule. As a sign of its times. "It's indicative of the reality of the economy," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington told Newsday yesterday. "Brian's position from the get-go was that, if he were to get Eric, he wouldn't pay the full freight." And so, as Huntington said, "It's maybe the first time ever when the Pirates have sent the Yankees money." For every dollar that Hinske receives in a Yankees uniform, 50 cents will come from the small-market, low-payroll, haven't-posted-a-winning-season-since 1992 Pirates.

Wow! Pirates spending money??? And we Pittsburghers just thought the Nuttings and McCrotchy just let the taxpayers pick up the majority of the tab for a beautiful new stadium in 01' which tripled the teams' value. Then they pocket revenue sharing money from teams (like the Yankees) and put a laughable product on the field. For all Steelers and Penguins haters out there here is your sweet revenge. The Pirates have now become perhaps the most pathetic sports franchise with absolutely the worst ownership. Making fun of ourselves is not even funny anymore. The last time we had a winning record George HW Bush was in office and the Internet was not operational yet.

I do feel bad for some of the small market teams, but I do believe in a few business addages ( if i spelled that correctly ).....you need to spend money to make money...if the pirates dug into their pockets, and maybe sighned a free agent once in a while , get a little excitement, maybe their attendence goes up, and profitibility goes up......As a Yankee fan I love this acquisition....cheap and flexible blue collar type of player......7 wins in a row for my Yanks woot woot

Whoever made a comment on a previous Pirates thread (hard to believe there was one) about taking the Pirates front office onto the Robert Clemente Bridge and staging a mass execution in front of thousands of screaming, angry Pittsburghers? Here here....

with the ball flying out of that stadium the thinking is that a guy doesn't even need a glove! is this guy bad in the field? I no nothing of him.

He wasn't the worst first baseman the Sox ever put on the field, but he ain't gonna win a gold glove any time soon.
