Bulls gave up on Gordon long ago

Is Ben Gordon worth $21-22 million? That's what it would have cost the Bulls to match the Pistons' offer of roughly $55 million over five years, with a starting salary near $9 million. With the Bulls near the projected luxury tax of $69 million, surpassing that tax by $9 million would have incurred a dollar-for-dollar penalty and prohibited them from collecting the approximate $3.5 million rebate for non-tax teams. The Bulls made the determination Gordon wasn't worth that some time ago, possibly in February when they acquired Brad Miller and John Salmons from Sacramento.

Gordon was best when he won Sixth Man of the Year.

Strange that the Bulls thought Ben Wallace was worth $15 million a year.

Interesting to see what happens to Rip Hamilton. They could put him in a package for a point guard like Kirk Hinrich, or Mo Williams. Or they could go after after a big man like Dalembert or Chandler.

Who is going to do the scoring? oh Ben Gordon.

Who is going to do the Defending? Prince and and and um...i swear atleast one player from their front court will foul out each game.

Um... the Pistons love Stuckey... why trade for another point?

And Gordon is def not worth that kind of money

True that...

they do love stuckey & have probably 'over-valued' his ability
but what if he falters ? then what ?
they they're in the lottery-

I don't like them blowing all their $$ on CV & Gordon
but at least they invested in relatively younger guys

As a Bulls fan, glad to see him go. Sure, 20% of time he was unstoppable, but the other 80% of the time I was throwing things at the TV because of his bad shots and turnovers. The Bulls need to trade Tyrus Thomas and an expiring contract (Tim Thomas or Brad Miller) for a top tier inside presence like Amare. They have all of the other pieces in place to be good, but without a low post scorer, they'll never take the next step.

pistons over paid 2 get gordon. he's not worth 11mil a year.

They loved Stuckey when he was backing up Billups. But last season he was exposed as a combo guard that should come off the bench.

The Pistons have me scratching me head this morning. Gordon and Stuckey isn't the best of backcourts and Villanueva and Kwame Brown as your front court is going to have some rough nights.

Joe D. would have been better off sitting on that money for one year instead of wasting it on those two.

I can see why Doug Collins reportedly passed on the Pistons gig. I don't see a good year ahead for them. I just don't.

Because Stuckey isn't a point. Stones have 2 combo guards, a 2 guard (Rip) and 1 pure 1 guard (Bynum). Yeah, good luck...

Seriously... he passed!!! Whats the source?

Sometimes I think Joe D has names floated out there just so that when he makes a mediocre hire (and passes on the rediculous name) everyone is happy.

They could probably use one or two years in the lottery. They had a good run, but McDyess, Hamilton, the Wallaces (Rasheed, Ben and Marcellus) all got old together. At the end they were Billups, Prince and some old guys...and now Billups is gone. Maybe a couple of years in the top 5 draft will rejuvenate the franchise.

And before someone counters about "all those playoff appearances", is the prospect of getting bounced in Round 1 for the next five years really that attractive? Let the past go and build for the future.

July 2, 2009  09:31 AM ET

As a Piston fan, this will grow on me. There's a rule, never let a player walk to another team within the division. Gordon cannot wait to play against Chicago.

July 2, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Haters on this...Ben Gordon year-after-year has been their best player...One year Deng shows up with good stats and he's paid. Hinrich is overpaid. But every year, Gordon is the top scorer; the go to guy...etc. Even with Rose on the team. Given Gordon is a poor mans DWade, but he does what he does. He's like Iverson, except he's willing to come off the bench (even though he should be starting), doesn't have a bad attitude and shoots better. What did Chicago want? Detroit usually has an eye for talent. Look at what they brought out of Kwame Brown. They made major moves signing Gordon and Villanueva. If they can sign McDyess I see them getting back to conference finals. If they can sign, say an Artest, I see them doing an Orlando Magic and possibly reaching the finals...

July 2, 2009  09:33 AM ET

No sense paying that amount of money to a streaky player who is a ball hog and can't play defense.

I totally agree. To become really good usually requires being really bad. I get the feeling that Joe doesn't have that choice. It sounds like there is pressure from above to spend money and fill the seats now, even at the cost of being an elite team.

Lets be honest, the Stones were a piece away from POSSIBLY being a dynasty. What would it have taken? Probably going over the luxury tax. I think Joe is operating in a tough situation. Owners were satisfied with 6 straight ECF and not hungry enough to win it all. By spending money on Gordon and Villanueva, it shows the owners are unwilling to aim for the lottery.

If this is the case, expect to see Joe leave in a few years. If the Stones struggle, it might not be by his choosing. The Stones just turned into the Milwuakee Bucks though.. makes me nervous.

July 2, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Oh snap, they got a shoot first guard with a chip on his shoulder? Sounds like Billups-lite.

Keep on hatin, keep on hatin, keep on hatin.

Watch out Marcus Camby we're coming for you next. Expiring contract, gritty post player, sounds like it's right up Joe D's ally. Let's see who he trades though. I guaransheed Dumars is putting together a package for Camby.
