Havlat takes parting shot at 'Hawks

The Blackhawks and Martin Havlat couldn't reach a contract agreement and both sides have moved on -- albeit maybe not so amicably. Havlat, who led the Hawks in scoring last season with 29 goals and 48 assists, may not be leaving on the best terms, as indicated by several tweets late Wednesday. "Excited to be in Minny where I was welcomed and appreciated by management," Havlat wrote. "The real story about what happened in Chicago [will] come out. "Thanks to all Hawks fans. ... Will never forget your generosity and the great playoff run! There's something to be said for loyalty and honor."

Sounds simple to me. Chicago and Havlat couldn't work a deal out so they signed Hossa. I think the press is looking to much into this.

I think its "the real story about what happened in Chicago will come out" line that everyone is wondering about. My guess is they offered a deal and then pulled it once they figured they had a shot to sign Hossa. Thats the business, but he may have been led to believe that he was the guy. Sometimes that stings.

I think you are definitely onto something there. This has nothing to do with the fact they couldn't reach a contract...that's just the way free agency works. But I definitely think they pushed him out of Chicago to bring in Hossa. Boy, Marian is leaving a trail of hatred everywhere he goes now isn't he?

I think Chicago will regret the Hossa signing...he's a very talented player who does NOTHING in the playoffs

July 2, 2009  08:17 AM ET

Hossa has been trying to relive that moment -- sans the torn ligaments -- in the Stanley Cup Finals ever since.

''That's why I chose Chicago,'' he said. ''They have a chance to win the Cup.''

-Actual quote from an article in the Chicago Sun Times.....LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 2, 2009  08:49 AM ET

According to Havlat's agent, they had been discussing a multi-year deal for 3 months, and when July 1st happened, they pulled it and was only offering Havlat a 1-year deal, while the other clubs (think it was Boston and Edmonton, along with Minnesota) offered him a multi-year deal. That would explain why he isn't that happy about the management.

Are you crying Havlat???? You do 0 until you have a contract year. You are SOFT, very soft and you don't compete half the time. The only story that should be told is that you are a waste of talent

in the last two years hes played for 2 perrenial cup contenders.... chicago is a vastly improved team with tons of upside.... but they are still just fringe cup contenders.... maybe hossa's english isnt very good and thats the only sentence he can say clearly..... for someone who wants a cup he sure knows how to go about it..... a cup full of cash that is...

heheh....maybe it's the three day weekend but I am in a particularly snarky mood today.

I hate seeing Marty go but truth is he's soft and who knows when the next 30 game vacation for reinjuring his shoulder will come?

That said I wasn't to thrilled to see Hossa come on board for the lone fact of Tallon shooting for the moon too early. Next year at this time you're going to see some of these celebrated young guys let go. Tallon has a great nose for drafting and some of that credit can also go to the scouts ,but Dale needs to learn more about contract economics. I'd rather have a team that is continuously a contender than one big rush at the cup.

Do you really think the fans in Motown really give a $h!+ about this guy? I think they've moved on.

July 2, 2009  11:11 AM ET

Of course they care, he did nothing in the Finals when it mattered the most. And if they don't care, they will now that he's playing for Chicago because of the rivalry there, they will have along time to learn to hate him.

I do think this is a bad deal though due to their cap space and next year everyone going UFA. It's nice to make a run but it's a little early in the year to be already thinking about going for the Cup.

I was referring to Havlat

July 2, 2009  11:24 AM ET

Havlat had one good year with Chicago: his contract year. Other than that he was always hurt. Why should management want to throw multiple years at someone like that? I like the way he played this past season, but until then he was an under-achiever.

July 2, 2009  11:43 AM ET

Funny, wasn't that the reason he left Pittsburgh and went to Detroit, because "they have a chance to win the cup"? And we all know how well that worked out for him. What a POS.

July 2, 2009  12:41 PM ET

Every team has "a chance to win the Cup"...question is, how good of a chance. Allan Muir wrote a good article over on SI about this signing. Tallon has really painted himself in a corner. I knew about how this would be a problem for signings next year, but I didn't know that Barker, Eager and Versteeg are RFA's right now. What we thought was a young core that could make runs at the Cup for while might blow up quicker than we thought.

He did nothing LAST YEAR, but how did he do with the Pens the year before? Something like 26 pts in 20 games. That's not too shabby.

July 2, 2009  02:03 PM ET

Havlat was hurt much of the time he was with the 'hawks. He was conveniently rather injury free in his contract year, what a coincidence! He often does that happen when a an oft injured player miraculously is injury free in his contract year.

Until the chips were down in the finals when he went MIA at the worst possible time.
