Rangers passed on Heatley

Rangers general manager Glen Sather said he had been given an opportunity to bid on Dany Heatley, but passed. He spent the same on Marian Gaborik as he would have on Heatley, whose reputation is toxic, and without yielding an asset, though there's no law it had to be a one-or-the-other. Indeed, Sather said it wasn't.

Heatley: Another million-dollar talent with a two-cent head.

Second team Heatley has requested a trade from. I think many NHL teams are going to pass on him, besides the asking price is too much.

Could not agree more...this guy is the definition of a locker room cancer. Had a feeling the Rangers were going to go with Gaborik after they dumped Gomez. No idea where Heatley will end up...

im worried about the gaborik signing. at least heatley plays. but then again sather didn't give up any of the kids so i guess it could be worse.

in essence, we traded Gomez straight up for Gaborik. That's how I look at it. Heatley would have cost us a draft pick, a prospect and one of Cally/Dubi/Staal. I just wish we could have not paid him so much 7.5 for a guy who hasn't played a full season in 3 years. When he's healthy he's a 40 goal scorer

I just don't understand why Sather would offload one bad contract situation (Gomez) only to bring on another bad contract situation. For a point of comparison, Malkin/Crosby are making $8.7 mil right now...and Gaborik is at $7.5? Wow

July 2, 2009  09:23 AM ET

I guess the rangers must have dumped a pile of money into their training and medical departments, cause 7.5 mil is a huge chunk for a guy that plays half a season..... though i would like to see what a player with his talent is capable of if he played 80 games....

July 2, 2009  09:33 AM ET

Heatley is a far better player tha Gaborik. The NYR are a dog$hit organization who continue to make mistake after mistake with their signings. Someone has to let Sather know just cause someone wants $7.5mil to play 3/4ths the season you do NOT have to give it to them. Gomez & Drury are HUGE mistakes and he just added another

July 2, 2009  09:56 AM ET

Even playing 17 games, Gaborik would have been the 6th highest goal scorer on the team last year

LOL get a life dude. Worry about your own team. Did anyone in the Rangers actually have a negative affect on your life? O wait maybe your life is so boring and dull they have.

Hope everyone who is Canadian had a great Canada Day.

Happy 4th to everyone!!!

I don't think he was bashing the Rangers in general, just Sather's questionable signings (i.e. letting Colton Orr go to sign Brashear for a higher amount). Hope you have a good 4th as well!

Gaborik is the player most likely to be a bust. A big contract from New York, the team that always gets the busts, he also always gets injured.

You're right, Heatley is better that Gabs. But Heatley would have cost us more. Murray would have wanted a Roszival, Zherdev, dubi/cally, and a pick/prospect, and his contract would have been the same cap hit!. Get over it man, the Rangers will always attract the leagues best players, b/c NYC is the best city in the **** world. everyone wants to play here. and bad organizations don't make the playoffs last 4 years. I guarantee if Gabby signed with your team you'de be singing a different tune.

July 2, 2009  10:34 AM ET

Where do you think the Gaborik signing will rank in Sather's UFA/trades?
Is it worse than Valerie Kamensky? How about Stephane Quintal? Fleury? Gomez? Redden?
HAHAHHAHA - Glen Sather is the greatest show since Seinfeld went off the air.

If Gaborik doesn't end just like Bure did for Sather I would be shocked.

Larry Sanders was better.

Totally disagree. Gaborik is a better player than Heatley. Heatley has been playing with other star players his entire career and Gaborik has been on his own. Heatley would have cost the Rangers 3 young roster players and a 7.5 million hit. Would have been a bad move.

HOWEVER, Gaborik is an injury prone player and the only reason Sather "attracted" him is that he once again ridiculously overpaid. Hossa,Havlat,Niedermeyer and the Sedin twins all signed contracts yesterday and the largest cap hit was 6.1 yet Sather somehow managed to get Gaborik for 7.5. Finding a sucker for Gomez was reversed by overpaying Gaborik. One poster said you basically traded Gomez for Gaborik but if you count resigning the restricted free agents who will get increases, Sather traded Gomez, Antropov, Naslund, Betts, Orr, Sjostrom, Mara and Morris for Gaborik, Higgins, Brashear and maybe another 2-3 million dollar guy that will put them right at the cap. Not so sure that makes sense to me.

Yes, but Arrested Development was pretty funny too Hank. That guy that looks like you carried the show.
