UGA-Michigan in 2010 a pipe dream

The rumor about a UGA-Michigan home-and-home series in 2010-2011 published online by the Michigan Daily, the student-run newspaper in Ann Arbor, appears to be mostly wishful thinking on the part of folks in maize and blue. As much as we???d love to see the Dogs revisit the scene of their historic 1965 upset of the Wolverines, there are some major and perhaps insurmountable obstacles in the way of such a deal, at least for next year and 2011.

It sounds nice on paper but why would I get the feeling that UGA would kill us?

July 2, 2009  11:35 AM ET

Can you elaborate on the "insurmountable obstacles"? Conflicts with the conference schedule? What?

July 2, 2009  11:37 AM ET

Revisit the scene of the 1965 upset??? The only person around here who gets to bring up games from the days of leather helmets, is Junior. Geeeeeeeezus.

July 2, 2009  11:53 AM ET

That SEC... its just so DAMN FAST...

Geeeeeeeeeeezus is right. Even I don't (often) go back that far. Try to stay within a 10 year statute of limitations.

The "insurmountable problem" with a home and home arrangement is that it would mean one fewer home game for both teams over the two year period. The "insurmountable problem" is money. At least, that's my guess. If the NCAA wants better non-conference match-ups, it's gonna have to limit, by rule, the number of home games a team can have in any given season.

...Weird - Google's spell check didn't like "matchups", insisted on a ****ing hyphen.

Last time we played Rich Rod we lost in the Sugar bowl. Don't worry, you guys will recover just fine.

That being said we need a good OOC opponent for 2010 (Louisville, Colorado, GT) and 2011 (Louisville, New Mexico State, and GT).

The "insurmountable obstacles" are most likely tied with Scheduling issues and money.

July 2, 2009  12:01 PM ET

Michigan's only open date is the sept. 4 opener, ours is sept 18. 1) This would be very hard to work out with all the other teams involved and 2) I'm not sure either team wants to play a road opener against a potential top 15 team.

I don't get the idea that UGA will kill anyone. Stafford and Moreno are gone and, contrary to homer-ist logic, you can't just "reload" these types of exceptional players. The D line's lack of QB pressure and their lack of size was evident last year. Special teams were horrible. There are lots of things to fix this year.

July 2, 2009  12:22 PM ET

I think the "insurmountable obstacles" are that UGa is getting pressure from the rest of the SEC to quit playing respectable out-of-conference opponents (like Ariz. St., Okla. St., and Ga. Tech this year).

When UGa does this, it makes it the rest of the conference look bad -- since Florida likes to play several "glorified scrimmages" every year against little-known Division II and "directional" schools (The Citadel, Florida Atlantic, Charleston Southern, etc.) and LSU endeavors to play every hypenated school that no one outside the bayou has ever heard of (Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, etc.).

Too bad Florida and LSU don't have the stones to play a respectable directional school like Southern Cal.

July 2, 2009  12:26 PM ET

The "insurmountable obstacles" is tha Michigan took pride in having one of the easiest schedules ( OOC) in the country, When they said they may have to drop the Irish because of schedule issues and they could not get anyone to play them, Georgis, Gators, and LSU said they would play Michigan anytime, then within hours Michigan signed with the Irish,, This year Delware State (weak D2 school and 2 MAC teams ( we all know Toledo - MAC) beat them in the big house last year,,, the new coach will have Michigan back to a good team, and away from the weak schedule and having the fans say it is one of the toughest in the land,,

July 2, 2009  12:31 PM ET

I think the scheduling issue are with timing of the already scheduled games.

I would like to see schools actually play real non-conference games. Michigan used to schedule several good programs outside the conference. Michigan played ND and FSU back to back one year. Syracuse(back then they were good) and ND back to back. Colorado and ND back to back games.

I have no problem with scheduling a regional opponent like CMU, EMU or WMU for one game. I have no problem with scheduling a lower half team from a BCS conference. Games Like Michigan-Vandy are decent games at least. I think Michigan needs to have Michigan-ND and Michigan vs one other major BCS conference opponent, such as a Georgia, Nebraska, more games with Oregon, or UCLA or Cal. Texas someone like Texas Tech. A Florida St or Miami game would be good too.

Michigan vs Delaware State just doesn't cut it.

It was a bit of an overreaction on my part.

Just to correct people. App St, Delaware State and UMASS type schools are NOT Division II schools, they are what was known as DIAA now FCS schools. They are all division I schools. There has only been one game in the last 10 years that I am aware of between a division II school and a Division IA (FBS) school in the last 10 plus years. That was Division II power Cal-Davis playing at Idaho in 1997.

As a graduate of a Division II school and an athlete at that school I wish people would know what they heck they are speaking of when they are talking about the lower division schools.

That's a classic game in UGA history. I wouldnt expect you to know about it but most UGA and UM fans do.

You conveniently forget FSU is annually on the Gator schedule. Nice try, but knowledgeable fans see past the homerism.

Very thoughful of you to slam UF and LSU on a GA-UM thread, though. You wouldn't be related to svtjer, would you?

Actually, Geno ATkins, Jeff Owens, and Kade Weston are all future NFL DT's...two of which were injured last year for the whole season. They are healthy and back this year. It's DE that we may have issues with, not the interior line. I think folks are going to be surprised with this years team....they may not have the superstar (except AJ Green) but will be a tough scrappy team. That said, I am the type of fan that never says we're going to "kill" any team....seen too many UGA games for that nonsense.

I seetwo potential openers those seasons for Michigan based on my research. Cal and UCLA. Both would be nice opponents for Michigan to play. I agree with you on not wanting to play a potential top 15 team on the road to open a season. The current structure of the sport kills the idea of a potnetial loss in a great game to open the season.

Until the NCAA takes power away from the BCS and runs a playoff for DIA football, you will see less and less games between top tier OOC opponents.

The lack of non-conference games is nothing more than a product of the BCS format. Why risk a loss to a good opponent early on in the season when you can get a sure win against a cupcake school instead, or even better play a school which doesn't even count in the BCS computers like a DIAA opponent.

Don't be an idiot. Florida and Alabama don't dictate who Georgia plays.

This has to be the reason. It is about money.

Michigan has beaten FLorida twice, Auburn, and Alabama in the past ten years... This will be a great competitive game if it does happen in 2010
