The Insider has learned that Columbus star Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the reigning MLS most valuable player and among the top midseason favorites for the award this year, is again attracting interest from his native Argentina. One club has stepped forward, though its identity was not immediately made available. Schelotto has told colleagues that he would prefer to return to the Crew next year, if Columbus wants him.

I love hearing the last part of this--that he would prefer to return to the Crew rather than Argentina. He's a terrific player with a great reputation in South America, and that sends a strong message about MLS.

Here is the prime example what the DP slot was intended to be used for.

But did they really have to use the pic that makes him look like Richard Simmons in a Crew shirt?

MLS needs their Designated Players to have character, not just be characters.

Anyone hear that Dempsey turned down a contract extension from Fulham, which means this would be his last year there, thus making it a real possibility he could be transfered. dun dun dun

I think Angel and Schelotto are good examples of good DPs. Blanco to an extent has been really good too, even if he has done some outrageous things.

Denielson had to be the worst. Man, was he worthless.

Everton is linked to A LOT of Americans these days. Dempsey, Bradley, Donovan, Altidore... I would like to see Dempsey and Donovan play in Spain, but that's just me. Everton is a nice place which should be top 6 this year... and they could be better because Moyes is a helluva manager.

Forget Spain. Dempsey would benefit career wise by moving to Italy to undergo special training in Milan.

Good point. I think to be fair Angel also fits this description. It's just tough to critique his performance because despite making MLS Cup last year, he's still surrounded by shyte for the most part.

....is this some alter-ego?

Spain would be interesting. I don't know how well he'd actually fit. Despite the fact that it's more free flowing in general, I think we all saw that he's more effective when he can utilize his speed. Defenders are (again in general) smaller in stature but more mobile, so I wonder if his greatest asset may be neutralized a bit.

I think Dempsey is really just using this as a way to get his wages increased at Fulham. I think Fulham will pay and he will stay. I don't think Moyes would need both Dempsey and Donovan. But it would be cool.

One of the reason's Schelotto doesn't want to go back to Argentina is b/c he's happy with his life in Columbus. He knows his familly's safe, his kids are getting a good education, his wife loves the neighborhood, etc. He's no longer looking to advance his soccer carreeer, he's more focussed on his family's welfare now and staying in the U.S. makes sense.
