Although Derrick Brooks was caught off guard when the Buccaneers cut him loose, the former Florida State star says he isn't harboring any bitterness. Brooks' name has been mentioned in speculation with at least two teams: the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints However, nothing tangible seems to be brewing at the moment.

I don't know how much game you still got bro, but if I were you, I'd check out the Pats...old LBs and DBs seem to find a home there.

What the h.e.l.l..... this isn't a Favre story. I am writing a letter to my congressman.

he's been in a 4-3 system forever...I can't see him going to a 3-4 for the last year of his career.

It's easy to play defense when you know what play the offense is going to run (Spygate)

And he only weighs 235lbs. No where near large enough to play linebacker in the 3-4 scheme. The old man would break a hip.

I don't know about the weight issue...look at Bart Scott, Ray Lewis, Teddy Bruschi, David Harris, etc. There are plenty of LB's that are around the same weight. It's completely different to play in a 3-4 though and I can't see a guy who has MAYBE one year left in the league doing that.

July 3, 2009  09:59 AM ET

I don't see the Giants going after him. Boley will be ready in September, Clark, Kehl, and Wilkinson have started before. Sintim will get his chance, and Kiwanuka played OLB in the past. The numbers are against him there.
I hope he plays another year for somebody. Nice if he could go out on his own terms. He earned that much.

Ray Lewis 250lbs and Tedi Bruschi 247lbs. Not the best examples. David Harris 243lbs and Bart Scott 240lbs are okay though. You could even name D'Qwell Jackson 240lbs and Jerod Mayo 242lbs.

All those linebackers mentioned? Inside linebackers. Derrick Brooks is an outside linebacker. And 3-4 outside linebackers tend to look more like 4-3 defensive ends.

Successful 3-4 outside linebackers:
DeMarcus Ware 262lbs
Adalius Thomas 270lbs
Joey Porter 255lbs

James Harrison 242lbs is the only lighter 3-4 outside linebacker. But I don't even believe that Pittsburgh ran a 3-4 last season. Their standard scheme looked more like a 2-5, with only two down linemen.

But regardless, these players are all heavier than Derrick Brooks. If Brooks were to join a 3-4 team, he would be expected to gain weight, further declining his aged foot-speed. He would most likely have to move inside. I don't see a smooth transition.

Quite the opposite, 50, I have to disagree. There isnt any solid veteran leadership amongst those outside LBs. They are a talented group, but if you can add a veteran of his caliber for the right price, he could really improve those players.

Kind of like what Sam Madison did for the DB core. I like the move.

You make a good argument. But, what do yo do when Boley is fully healthy this September? the same with Simtim. It would not be a bad move, but numbers mean a young ( and cheaper)OLB is going to get cut. Or Clark.
I will say this. If Reese and his scouts think he can still play, then they will move on him. If they do not go after him, then that tells you all you need to know. I have faith in the GM and his scouts ( of which he was one for years). But I still do not understand why they did not go after Edwards.

I would cancel the Patriots. Brooks doesn't seem like the type of guy who wants to have to go on a diet of steroids and HGH.....

While I have the same faith in the management of the team, my guess is that they are growing tired of Wilkinson (sp?), he is injured every year, and eats up a roster spot every year, so they might as well send him to practice squad if you can add a Brooks on the cheap.

Do not revive the Braylon "Stonehands" Edwards debate. Im glad they didnt get him, what good is getting a receiver who can't do his primary job... catch?

Lol. OK on Edwards. It is past. Hard to play in Cleveland last year though. He made the Giant DBs look like little kids last year. Ah well.
But I will NEVER understand how they let Kawika Mitchell walk. The man could play. Kehl might be the keystone in all this. Sheridan was the LB coach before being named the new DC. He should have a good read on what they are capable of doing and what he wants them to do..Brooks has been out there for months, you would think they would have gone after him by now.

I think the Giants are pretty much set on defense. I'm sure Reese is focusing on a talented speed receiver. If he finds one, watch out!! I think the Giants should be the preseason favorite to win the NFC East. Loads of talent and good coaching. Plus, this is a proud team. They can't be happy with last season's ending.

It appears they are determined to use the receivers they have. Hmmm? The " experts " I read all say the Eagles are the team to beat. Hard to argue with that. They did a lot this off season, only thing is their new offensive line is good on paper, but not guys who played in the NFC East before.....A big difference.. We shall see..

Should be another interesting race. I will enjoy seeing Felix Jones on the field again. Suspect DeMarcus Ware will have a monster season. He has improved every year.

I like Brooks and I think he can continue to contribute for another season or two. I am still surprised no one is taking a chance on him.

I have seen all the "experts" picking Philly to win that division and I just can't see it. Giants may no longer have Plax but they still have a good rushing attack and a hungry group of WRs. Plus Manning is finally developing into the QB everyone expected. The anchor of the team will be that defense which welcomes back Osi to that amazing line. I just don't see Philly, Dallas, or Washington having the answer to that defensive line. Philly's line is suspect at best in my opinion. Peters is good but I wonder which Peters will show up and play (2007 - one of the best LTs in the game, or 2008 - a major underperformer).
