Jefferson: Kidd's going to Knicks

Jason Kidd will have to decide whether playing at Madison Square Garden is worth forfeiting $12million. That is approximately the difference in the three-year offers Kidd received from the Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. A person close to the veteran point guard confirmed that the Knicks presented Kidd with a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million Saturday. The Mavs offered Kidd a three-year contract worth between $25million and $30 million. Several league executives are convinced that Kidd is using the Knicks in order to squeeze more money out of Dallas. But a source close to Kidd claims that he is excited by the challenge of helping to turn around the Knicks. Also, Kidd believes that he could help lure LeBron James to New York if James becomes a free agent next summer. At least one of Kidd's former teammates believes the Knicks have a good chance of landing the point guard. Former Net Richard Jefferson said on Dan Patrick's radio show Saturday that Kidd's "gonna be a Knick."

There are 2 approaches to that Jeff comment ...

1. NY, to any player with little talent (as Kidd or him), is a dreamland since there are no players with that on their current roster and since their numbers would receive a boost within DAntonys system.

2. Even do DAL is going nowhere with Kidd, without him (at least by the time being) they are doomed. An adversary less to face in the wild wild west.

If Kidd does go to the Knicks, David Lee will have his best offensive season in 09-10.

July 3, 2009  07:42 AM ET

D'Antonio will get a great passer for his offense, but unlike Nash his outside shooting is suspect.

Kidd would be a fool to leave that money sitting on the table. Why would he at this point in his career? He's not gonna win a ring... that's evident. Even in NY it's impossible because the coach preaches no "D" so that means no "C"hampionship!

No one, it seems can resist knocking the Knicks(no "D" no "C"). Lebron even knocked them last season. He also pointed to their(Cavs) defensive play after sweeping Detroit. That defense got slapped in the face by Orlando. Yes in the championship series you have to make critical stops. The level the Knicks are at now, entertaining and Wins are the key to me.

July 3, 2009  08:37 AM ET

Let me add, when the Knicks start competing for the Eastern Div championship, then we can talk about more "D" for "C". Maybe then we will bring in Steve Kerr. lol

I'm thorn about Kidd in New York.

The plus side is he'll make NY more attractive to LBJ which should send shockwaves and trauma to Cleveland - works for me. Knicks might make the playoffs with Kidd and Duhon running the point... another plus...bad for Utah! However sticking another 6mil stone to the neck of the 2010 cap already being held down firmly by Jefferies and FatManEddy works against my 2010 fantasies...

Whatever happened to getting a young point guard that will learn and thrive in the system and having a clean slate for the 2010 free agent showdown?

Please Mike and Walsh... stay the course... keep the mission simple... please give Kidd a one year contract if he really wants to come to NY and make the other years team options....

I will be amazed at this happening. I mean, what is in NY? The Knicks are horrible and I don't see them turning things around with a player like Kidd, although Kidd could mentor. This could be a blessing in disguise for the Mavs since everyone projects doom without Kidd. Just maybe if this happens you will see the Mavs pick up a fiesty young PG who turns out to do well. Anything is possible.

In the end though, I have a hard time seeing a player turning down MORE money AND do it for a team who has no chance at a championship.

there is no way he is going to knicks...he wants to win a championchip..and i know it wont happen there

Oldnicksfan are you still fighting defense??? (lol) The Cavs are a much better team now than Detroit. However, Detroit, for whatever reason would have pummeled Orlando. They always do. Cleveland lost to Orlando not because Orlando is better, but because Cleveland's so-called all star (Mo) didn't show up! There was a stretch of 5 games where NO ONE on Cleveland other than LBJ scored 20 points. Are you kidding me??? That's horrible!!! The Cavs aren't great defenders on the perimeter and they also got killed there.

The problem with Cleveland is they are a 1 man team in the playoffs and that's not gonna work against the best teams as you can see.

Why someone Kidd's age would take less money to play for NY is beyond me.

Yeah cruse1, I am trying. Cleveland though looked very strong for the regular season and the first 2 playoffs series. With Boston looking to get stronger, the Lakers adding Artest, and matchup problems with Orlando, if Lebron is not careful he may have a Karl Malone type career. That is, a very strong team but always having that one team blocking you.

if it's true that we're offering 6 mil per year-
I am now absolutely torn.

I AGREE with us needing a young PG to grow with
but kidd might just be a 'lure' for big FA's.....

That being said-
how/WHY in the world would he leave 10-15 mil on the table?
ESPECIALLY when he would be going to a worse situation....

July 3, 2009  12:01 PM ET

Is Richard Jefferson Kidd's agent (or spokesman) now?

July 3, 2009  12:31 PM ET

Is anyone still thinking LBJ is going to the Knicks next summer to play with a washed up fossil of a PG and two above average players not stars in Lee and Al Jefferson and the rest is a bunch of role players with alot of baggage and gimmicks??? LOL!!!!! WHAT A JOKE!!!!

Like I said in my previous quote... money is not an issue for Kidd. He's put his family through enough drama already so leaving that much money on the table to be with them is a great - you can't put a price on that...

And with Artest going to the Lakers and RJ in San Antonio it's now a two team warfare in the West. I have been torn about the Kidd-NY move but given how things are shaping up I'm all for it now... It looks like Jefferies will be shipped out with either Nate or Lee and with Curry's weight and financial issues there's a high chance he'll agree to a buyout... so yeah come to NY Kidd and show LBJ what you can still do...

July 3, 2009  12:59 PM ET

He's going to take the cash. He'd be a fool not to. The Knicks should find a young point guard like Rubio or Curry and let them make their mistakes and learn this year. It's a lost season anyway.
