Urlacher understands not signing Burress

Brian Urlacher is all about giving second chances. He supported Tank Johnson until Johnson eventually pushed the Bears over the limit. Now the Bears evidently have backed away from another troublesome player, all but ending their pursuit of free agent receiver Plaxico Burress. And Urlacher says he's not really surprised. "I was surprised when I heard they were going after him at all because as a player, I [know there will be] some type of suspension," Urlacher said Thursday during a break at his football camp. The door appears to be closed now as the Bears seem content to enter the training camp with their roster as is.

Well, he does have a strong running game and a solid, yet aging, defense to help him out too. And, I would be a whiney boy if some tool upstart first year head coach tried to get rid of me for a one year wonder in Matt Cassel.

Plaxico Burress have never caught more than 78 passes in a 16 game regular season. Actually it is rare for him to break 70 catches.

He sounds overrated to me.

he does more then just catch passes. Plax makes defenses double team him, which leads to other guys getting open and gives the offense an easier time of running the ball. Eagles D coordinator, Jim Johnson, said that because Plax wasn't there last year in the playoffs, they didn't have to worry about getting burned deep, so they focused on pressuring the QB and stopping the run...and they won that game, fairly easily. Sometimes you need to look beyond stats to see a players true value.

It is not how many you catch, it is when. He can take a game over, not many WR can. There is no CB that can cover him all day one on one. And on the goal line, forget it. Just ask the Packers, or Eagles or Redskins or Cowboys..He was on a running team ( Giants), why would he put up big numbers for a season?

July 3, 2009  10:22 AM ET

Once his legal problems have been dealt with, you will see a number of teams go after him. Including the Bears. That might not be until next year though.

July 3, 2009  10:35 AM ET

Once THIS ROUND of legal problems are done, hes been pulled over 5 times since the arrest. Even in Pittsburgh this guy was a knucklehead.

He might be the biggest **** of all them. His BS will never stop

Exactly. I don't know the guy personally but it does seem as if he is immature and lackadaisical. At 6'5 230 with his speed and ability, imagine if he had the work ethic and intensity of a Jerry Rice, Chris Carter---or even a Micheal Irvin. Neither of these all-time great recievers had the height, speed, or leaping ability that Plaxico posesses (in fact all of the aforementioned guys had below average NFL speed). When 'Plax became focused within a game--no one in the league could stop him in single coverage. He would just destroy the Eagles secondary. The only reason he didn't have a great Super Bowl game is because he had a knee injury, but he still made the game winning TD. I'm not a big Plaxico fan, but he has a lot of ability.

Perhaps the biggest waste of natural talent in a long, long time..Manchild..

Urlacher is smart and so are the Bears. They can see what Plax can't seem to see: that he is going to be suspended. I don't know if he has really changed and is now committed to playing football but I think he will end up somewhere once he serves his suspension.

July 3, 2009  12:12 PM ET

He should have carried a revolver. They're much safer. Having a Glock with "one in da chamba" flopping around in your pants at a dance club is just plain stupid.

July 3, 2009  12:24 PM ET

It seems like the only people who don't understand not signing Burress are Burress, his lawyer and Drew Rosenhaus.

Although he is overatted, he is far and above better than anything the Bears have at wide reciever. Cutler is going to have a long year dumping passes to the tight end and running backs, as well as taking coverage sacks.

And that suspension won't start until AFTER he's served his sentence. The Commish doesn't go for this "concurrent sentencing" crap.

Do the crime, do the time. Do two crimes, do two times. That's the way it should be. Plax's second crime is making the NFL look bad, and he will be punished for it.

Right now, I suspect Plax will get the 3 1/2 year mandatory sentence spelled out in the book. With time off for good behavior (not a given for a guy like Plax, incidentally) he'll be out in two, but then he'll probably get a season off at the hands of Mr. Goodall. He's 32 now, so, let's see, 32 + 2 + 1 equals 35. By that time, he's not going to be the threat he was last season.

No one wants to put any money into a player would is going to likely miss at least five games as soon as the ink is dry on the deal. I think the only way any team would sign him right now is if there was no money up front. That would mean that Plax doesn't get paid to sit on his ass, and just as important, Rosenhaus doesn't get paid for the foreseeable future. Which means that scenario will not materialize at all.

July 3, 2009  01:20 PM ET

I would take Plax over Terrell. I have watched Plax make defenses look silly in single and even double coverage down deep. Terrell cannot be relied on as a clutch receiver. He drops too many balls. Plax, for all his nonsense, is a clutch receiver.

Yeah....If your carrying a loaded gun in a public place children: Make sure it has a safety!!!

Hallelujah says the vikings fan (me). If the bears got him, it would have been tough to beat them.
