Indians open to trading Lee, Martinez

As for trading Cliff Lee or Victor Martinez, the Indians would consider it, but the return would have to be staggering. More than anything, it would have to ensure that the Indians would at least be competitive next year. What team in its right mind would make a deal that not only ruins what remains of this season, but next season as well? Teams have expressed interest, but nothing has caught Mark Shapiro's fancy.

The Mets could use Lee... They could use pedro and probably even tom seaver right about now...

July 3, 2009  07:54 AM ET

Blue Jays should trade the **** farm for these two and do it NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

July 3, 2009  08:33 AM ET

SHAPIRO IS A F#$K!!!!! HE TRADES THESE GUYS, WE SHOULD PLACE A BOUNTY ON ALL OF THEM. JUST AS BAD AS THE BROWNS, YOU CANT BUY ANY OF THE PLAYERS JERSEYS, SO WHY WOULD I SPEND THE MONEY? WE NEED OUR CORE. AND THAT MELOAN TRADE WAS BULL$%IT.

July 3, 2009  08:48 AM ET

Nobody gives up "the farm" anymore for anybody. Lee is not worth top level prospects. I'd rather keep my prospects. Martinez IS worth them but the Indians will want too much back

July 3, 2009  09:04 AM ET

The Indians are looking for mostly pitching and pitching only for the pair and their focus is power arm types with at least 2 other major league pitches.

From what I have heard locally for Lee it would take something like say The Rangers trading Feliz and Holland plus 1 or 2 lower like high A propsects but even then I would think they would still want at least one of those to be a pitcher also.

Or the same type deal from the Giants that would include Madison Bumgarner / Tim Alderson / Henry Sosa and a low A prospect / Dodgers - James McDonald / Scott Elbert or Ethan Martin plus Chris Withrow. I don't see the Blue Jays / Brewers have the pieces to make a deal for Lee.

The Reds could be the Dark-Horse here if they kick the tires on Lee they deep with pitching depth power arm types. Josh Roenicke / Zach Stewart / Daryl Thompson / Ramon Ramirez / Dallas Buck and they also have Homer Bailey who they could move also in the deal they also have Maloney ( I don't care for this one he projects more as a #5 guy fastball rarely reaches 90 ).

Victor type trade would be like Yankees Hughes and a couple lower prospects or Boston Bowden or Masterson plus Daniel Bard and maybe a lower prospect.

Remember both these guys are signed to contract past this year at very team friendly contract very reasonable and Martinez I think even has a team option for 2011. They Are Not Rentals.

So a trade involving eithier would involve major league ready pitching and the Indians are only interested in Front Of The Rotation type guys a guy who projects to be a future #1 and a future #2 or #3 would have to come back in any trade for Cliff Lee.

Any trade involving Victor would have to involve at least a future projectable #3 type and a top prospects position up the middle type guy or Projectable Middle of the Rotstion type guy and a lower prospect with a high up-side.

This Is Not My Opion THis Is Just What I Have Heard -- I have a realitive working for the Indians FO.

ROUTE FOR THE TEAM NOT THE NAME ON THE BACK OF THE JERSEY.

PS - After 4 or 5 years that jersey should be wore-out anyways .

Martinez isn't worth "the farm", either. I say this because I believe that he will be a DH in the near future. Offensively, he's great but he will be without a position sooner rather than later, IMHO.

I don't blame you for being angry. The Indians are very close to being competetive..just need a few pieces. I'd be furious if my team did this too.

A) Why?
B) He's not the answer for the Jays. They need bats...oh yeah, and that Vernon Wells guy to actually EARN his paycheck.

look over Lee's stats...he's good, but not great. He'd probably dominate in the NL, but I would not bring him to the AL East. He'd be mediocre at best in that division.Plus, the Jays will have to give up young pitching for him...that doesn't help your cause.

You're absolutely right.

Cy Young winning pitchers who average over 7 innings per start and carry a sub-3 ERA over their last 340 innings are a dime a dozen. . .

i'm very serious. He's just above par in the central...what do you think would happen when he moves to a stronger division? He's have success in the NL...but with the exception of last season, he's not a dominant pitcher. IMO.

6.29 ERA in '07. 4.4 in '06, 5.43 in '04...it seems like almost every other year he is nowhere near dominant. Not worth trading top tier prospects

July 3, 2009  10:12 AM ET

Minaya pulled a yoohoo for Santana; he can do it again, but not for Lee, we can use V. Martinez.

July 3, 2009  10:13 AM ET

Minaya pulled a miracle to land Santana, he can do it again for Lee or Martinez; they really need a bat.

Minaya got a gift. He's lucky the Twins held everyone else hostage when trying to trade that guy, then just gave him away to the Mets

July 3, 2009  10:17 AM ET

PS I will be shocked if any major trades are made be the Indians since Shapiro is asking for a teams first born

If I was Shapiro and could ship Victor to the Giants for Alderson and Sosa it would be a done deal.

Or Lee in any deal involving / Bumgarner and Sosa / Feliz and lower pitching prospects / done deal.

We have no quality pitching except Rondon near major league ready at AAA or AA the other guys at the loweer level are 3 to 4 years off.

So your Projected Rotation for 2011 is

#1 Carmona
#2 Sowers
#3 Laffey
#4 Huff
#5 Rondon

In the Top 20 prospects in January 09 here are you pitching prospect.

# 3 Adam Miller all experts think his Career is Over are major tendon surgery on his pitching finger needs a seond sugery in August then 12 months to 18 months before he will be allowed to pick up a baseball

#5 Hector Rondon 12 to 18 months away just started pitching at AA this year after being moved to the bullpen in May has yet to be the same dominating pitcher he was before the move now back in the rotation in Akron.

#8 David Huff a soft tossing lefty at the major league level right now who's fastball rarely reaches 92 he lacks confidence in his fastball he is a 2 pitch pitcher right now that projects as a 4 or 5 guy in the rotation . Shouldn't be here notpolished not major league ready

# 10 Scott Lewis == HURT ++ on the DL was at the major league level has had Tommy John in the past seem to be injury prone guy out of The Ohio State I see him more of a long reliever type guy he is a soft tossing guy. In a Rotation I see him no more than a #5 guy

# 12 Kelvin De La Cruz === HURT == He was having elbow soreness in April and was shut down he does throw hard but has major control issues. If he gets over his Elbow problem he is at least 2 or 3 years away. But could be a #3 type starter.

# 16 John Meloan - (GONE )-- Came in the Casey Blake trade last year has had some control issues this year but was is a Closer type / Starter power arm TRADED for a 32 YO Stiff yesterday who was designated for assignment by the rays last month and pitched in mexico last year WAY TO GO SHAPIRO .

# 17 Zach Putnam -- Strong arm guy the indians have turned into a bullpen guy he is a fast riser may be here when the rosters expand this season but he is NOT A STARTER

# 19 Rob Bryson - Power arm Starter that came in the CC Trade he was shut down a couple weeks after the trade with arm problem he under went surgery in the off season and has yet to pitch this year he is very young and nowhere close to the major at least 3 years away but is expected to make a full recovery and can rach the high 90's with his fastball.
Bryson may well end up being a closer in the future.

# 22 Bryce Stowell 2008 draft pick who looked awesome in summerball but very young and I would say at least 3 years away before he tastes the majors.

Eric Berger AA has turned some heads but nothing overpowering another maybe future 4 or 5 guy at least 12 to 18 months off.

Trey Haley 2008 draft pick 19 YO great stuff not even close 4 years off min
T.J. House 2008 draft pic I think also 19 or 20 maybe could see him in 2 to 3 years a a bullpen guy

July 3, 2009  10:18 AM ET

So we will be losing Lee and Westbrook after 2011 .

And if you don't deal Lee to get a couple Top Of the Rotation now and next year type power arm pitchers and Martinez for one ready starter and a couple of prospects type starters with LaPorta ready and a first baeman type - outfielder and Toregas and Santana major league ready now at the catching position - How would tou expect the Indians to even compete let alone contend past next year.

In a small market town where this years major league payroll was 80 mil and with the downturn in ticket sales and advertising sales one would have to expect the Dolan to want to cut payroll I don't think the indians will field a team with more than a 70 Mil payroll next season and that mean a couple of guys have to go.

You are stuck with Westbrook 11 mil Hafner 11.5 mil Wood 10.5 mil Lee 8 mil Victor 7 mil Peralta 4.6 mil Sizemore 5.6 mil Betancourt 5.4 Mil Carmona 4.9 Mil

Garko and Shoppach are both Arbitration Ellig. Garko will command a hugh raise and Shoppach already is at 2 + Mil and is most likely to get a slight bump.

Nobody else on the team is under contract for next year and you would think that Choo will be getting a pretty good bump he made 450,000 this year.

If your a Indians fan and your not sick yet you should be.
