Wild chasing Koivu

Chuck Fletcher still has a few players in his sights, including center Saku Koivu, but if none of those deals materializes, the Wild might be done with free agency. The addition of Koivu would make that flexibility less important because he would give the Wild four legitimate centers: Koivu, his brother Mikko, Eric Belanger and James Sheppard. That's something the Wild haven't had since Wes Walz retired.

And he wouldn't have to break the bank to get him. Any reasonable and Saku signs.

they'll sign him though.

Wow. Wes Walz retired in 2007. They make it sound like its been forever ago.

I keep hearing Anaheim wants Koivu to be the second line centre and centre his good friend Selanne.

July 3, 2009  11:48 AM ET

i don't think it's gonna happen, look for him to go to the ducks or devils...

I'm having a really hard time grasping why this deal didn't go down. I know there was an issue about years, but come on Chuck! Give the guy his four years, and if he severely declines before the contract is up, put him on waivers. Whatever...

I heard that this morning..., Koivu still has some game left and I think he'd make a decent #2 center in Duckland behind Getzlaf. I think Selanne's friendship will help the Ducks get the deal done sooner than later.

You think he would pick Selanne over his own brother, Mikko? Not to mention how happy his parents would be.

Old Folks. They should lower the maximum age for Junior and bring in more young blood.

I just hope he has some success wherever he goes. I liked Koivu alot in Montreal, but his time definitely ran out on him. The same recurring leadership issues, the same petty small things. Had he been just a bit more of a media presence and had a little more tact for dealing with the public he`d probably still be here. Either way, the habs moved on, and now saku has to move on. good luck.

He has stated repeatedly that he is wary of going to join his bro because he is having success there and he wants Mikko to stand out and be his own player.

Don`t want to dissect it, I`m just saying that it`s what he has said. I think he ends up a Wild, but you can`t say that the Ducks offer isn`t attractive, he will be a key element to what will probably be a contender. He will be surrounder by huge monsters, so he won`t have to deal with the garbage he has had to his whole career. If he wants to win, he goes to Anaheim...

I concur - best for Saku, next to retirement - would there be any doubt if it weren't an Olympic year - one big Finnish for a lot of them Suomites.
