Senators may keep Heatley's money

The Senators might not let Dany Heatley take the money and run after he turned down a deal to the Edmonton Oilers. While owner Eugene Melnyk, who paid a $4-million US bonus to the unhappy star, hasn't indicated he'll take any legal action, the Senators have talked about their options with NHL headquarters in New York. The Senators say they'd been given permission by Heatley's agents, Stacey McAlpine and J.P. Barry, to make a deal with the Oilers. Edmonton wasn't on the list of eight to 10 preferred desintations submitted by the agents, but GM Bryan Murray said he wouldn't pursue a deal without permission from the Heatley camp, which he claims he received.

This is getting ugly. And how about the Sens want to find a way to get back money on his roster bonus? They gave him that contract with the bonus and the "no movement clause". Maybe a 4 million dollar kick in the teeth will make them second guess offering a contract like that to anyone in the future.

Let him rot in the minors FOREVER. Go away crybaby boy.

They can't send him to the minors. He has a full NHL contract, not a two way deal. Unless he is rehabing, he doesn't have to report to the minors if they send him there.

It certainly smells foul and is only one of the many reasons I do not want him in Deadmonton.

You know it would be funny if he accepted the trade now after he got the 4 million.

I don't think so. He fancies himself better than Deadmonton. There are no long playoff runs in their future.

I could see him interested in Hongcouver though. They need somebody to play with the sisters. Burrows was good but a real 'gunner' might do well with them. And it the team doesn't really improve, I see Ragbhir Luongo wanting out after next year. So it's two fold for Hongcouver.

Rangers got their sniper, Hossa is locked up in Chicago, Camilleri (sp?) is a Hab. Hongcouver was after somebody like those guys. Heatley is all that's left. And admittedly, the bottom of a gnarly barrel.

And Heatley's summer home is in BC. So it fits. Not sure what Canucks would give up to get him though. If he was a true free agent his/their chances would be better.

Its pretty obvious he thinks of himself better than Edmonton. Aside from the cold winters, whats not to like? Its not like he has to roll around the snow all day when its -40. He'd get tons of ice-time in Edmonton. Something which he likes even if he's playing bad.

Lots of ice time with nobody to set him up won't make him happy either.

I really see him as a Canuck.

Plus Hongcouver winters are way better than Deadmonton's.

July 3, 2009  11:32 AM ET

What I don't get is, he is from Calgary. Why wouldn't he want to go back Alberta???

I love how you call them Hongcouver and Deadmonton. Hongcouver is better though because it is more original.

He should be used to the cold, he is from Calgary, I know it is warmer there but it still gets pretty cold. Edmonton has Hemsky to set him up. Also Vancouver can't afford him, and although they have nice winters, the summers are cool and it rains every day, but I guess he doesn't have to be there in the Summer.

'Used to' doesn't factor into it. It's more of a want to thing with cold winters. And Deadmonton is not exactly a hot spot for action junkies who fancy a big city life style as so many of these guys seem to want.

Canucks can afford him, they lost Ohlund. They have some space because they were sniffing after certain free agents and they'd have to trade somebody to get him.

And what's worse is they probably think they need him like I said earlier. Luongo will not be staying if the team doesn't present him with a Cup opportunity.

Exactly. Middle aged folks would love a choice lakeside or mountain cabin to relax in. A multimillionaire in his 20s like Heatley ALREADY HAS THAT for the summer. Bright lights, big city, pretty girls- that's what most of us would have wanted as a twentysomething guy. I've never been to Edmonton, been to Calgary, which is OK- but compared to being a millionaire in NYC or Vancouver? or LA?

Would like to see Heatley in Vancouver..., he can take some of the pressure off the twins and be that scoring winger they've wanted for a long time. I also heard something about Ottawa dealing Heatley to Calgary for Phaneuf, now that the Flames got JayBo but I don't see that one happening. The Canucks just signed Samuelsson from Detroit today so maybe they're thinking about dealing some of their younger guys to make room for Heat's salary?

July 3, 2009  04:25 PM ET

I can't see how any team would bring this guy into their locker room. He cried to get out of Atlanta, now he's cying to get out of Ottawa, who did him a huge favour by getting him out of his mess in Atlanta.I know I wouldn't want someone as selfish as him playing on my team. His heart doesn't come close to matching the ridiculous price tag he comes with. And I hope he has cried himself off the Canadian Olympic team, we don't need players like him .

I think they now have their winger for the sisters, Samuelsson.

Too bad, I used to like him.

July 3, 2009  05:18 PM ET

look I don't see that Heatley did anything wrong in this case. He specifically listed 10 teams which he wanted go to, presumably because he wants to win, and they decided to pursue a trade with a team not on the list. They want to deal him, and he wants to win, so why are they complaining about him not wanting to go to a non-contender.

July 3, 2009  05:19 PM ET

Again I say that Heatley is a moron. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when he royally screwed up a few years ago in Atlanta but, given his 'higher than thou' attitude, he disgusts me.
It is a privilege to play in this league. Its not a right. No player is ever 'above the game'. Certainly not him. I could think of a few players who could have had that attitude given the fact that they were just so much better than everyone else (Orr, Gretzky, Mario, etc...) but they knew that they themselves were not above the game itself.
Heatley is ordinary at best. Most certainly not even close to the few I mentioned above. I do not believe that any one of them ever turned down playing anywhere. They were happy to be chosen by their respective organizations and attempted to stay loyal (yes I know Gretzky was traded but, he went).
Heatley needs to grow-up or ............

He could always take Barry Melrose's or Matthew Barnaby's job. He might have to tone down on his expletive quotient though. Yeah I know, he comes from the TSN side. D ( no)H is gonna have a tough season wherever he plays or doesn't play - the guys from all the prospective national teams, including Canada, will see it as their chance to keep off that squad, and Edmonton and Ottawa at least will be giving him special treatment, or non-support in the case that he stays. Hockey players do better if they think things through. His best move now would be to fire his agent.
