How Rangers landed Gaborik

The video was delivered to Marian Gaborik's house in Slovakia at about 6 p.m., or noon in the Eastern United States on Wednesday, when the NHL free-agent market window opened. The fleet sniper, who had been the leading scorer in the history of the Minnesota Wild, did not get a contract offer from his former team, and the Rangers were prepared. The promotional video prepared specifically for the 27-year-old included highlights of his career, clips from games at Madison Square Garden and testimonials from players on how fabulous it is to play in New York. "I watched it right away and it was unbelievable," Gaborik said yesterday, less than 24 hours after he agreed to a five-year, $37.5-million offer - with a limited no-trade clause - that will make him the team's No. 1 right wing.

Nobody will even have a chance to hit him because he will probably get injured during their first practice.

The title should read - How the Rangers Landed Gaborik, because they offered the most money, by far and were probably the only team stupid enough to offer a long term deal to an injury prone player.
Do you think that title is to long?
Good thing is Gaborik didn't injure himself putting the DVD in the DVD player.

July 3, 2009  09:37 AM ET

More like Gaborik said to his agent...Do you think we can find any another team to over pay me with a long term deal? Wait? Didn't NYR just free up some money? CHA CHING!!!

I like Gaborik and I wanted him in Deadmonton. I'd like to see him have a full season and prove all the nay sayers wrong.

For sure he is fragile but when he's on song there are few better to my eye. I've seen him hurt the Canucks which always makes me misty-eyed...

Dude had a bad hip this year and needed surgury, he came back and was a stud.

I can not believe the hate for him. You guys are harder on him than I am on Crosby. Good grief.

Dude can play and when healthy is a top 10 player. Someone keep note of this Gaborik will be great this year. He will be the best signing the Rangers have made in years. I know I went out on a limb with that one.

You like Gaborik? I thought a long time ago you ripped on him? He's a talent for sure but he's just so injury prone.

Not me. I've always liked him. I never argue his fragility. Like I liked Forsberg but not his feet/ankles.

Like I said, I've seen him possitively rip the Canucks all by himself. And he's a deadly performer when he's healthy.

It's always the 'healthy' thing that is the issue.

Whats the over/under of how many games he plays this season? I say he lasts 25 games before his 1st injury.

It is his first year in his contract, I think he stays motivated and tries his best to stay healthy and avoid hits. He will last 30 games because it is his first year. After the first year he will last around 15 games.

After watching him for years and seeing his freakish offensive talent up close, I do hope he manages to make a splash in NY. However, he has established a deserving reputation for being a complete **** who refuses to play with any pain whatsoever. When he opted to have surgery this year, it was a well-known fact that he was able to play, albeit with discomfort, and there was no long-term risk to gutting out the season and having the surgery at the end of the year. Unfortunately for we Wild fans, "gutty" and "Gabby" are two words that were never used together.
Giving this guy a five year deal was not a prudent move. Then again, it's the freakin Rangers!

July 3, 2009  01:36 PM ET

ok, that got edited. **** = 'kitty cat', so to speak.

July 3, 2009  02:24 PM ET

I'm not all that disappointed with this signing...at least the Rangers are throwing this kind of money at top talent this time instead of second-tier talent. He's played in 76% of the possible games he could have played over his career. That's not great, but let's not overexaggerate the issue.

It's still the best big signing the Rangers have made in a long, long, time.

July 3, 2009  02:27 PM ET

At the end of the tape was Dudley Moore from the movie Crazy People saying"Come to New York. There were less murders here last year." I could insert a Heatley joke here but even I am not that coldhearted.

I guess when you frame this signing against the Rangers' other free-agent crimes (ie. Gomez, Drury, Redden, Shanahan, Gretzky, Bure, Kovalev, Ozolinsh, Rosival, Nedved, Holik, Kasparaitis, Lindros, Fleury...), this is a pretty solid gamble for Sather. Gaborik has the potential to be a Richard trophy winner, but his attitude needs to change. Grit cannot be taught, and up to this point in his career, he's shown that he doesn't have any. Maybe things change now that he's on the biggest stage.
If not, I wish you luck with the NY media and fans, Marian.

July 3, 2009  03:22 PM ET

Btw, I need to give sincere props to the Rangers for their fleecing of the Habs. Now THAT was a great move! McDonagh alone is worth more than Gomez.

This just in.....Gaborik stubs toe on millions of dollars given to him by New York Rangers...out for the season!!!!

July 3, 2009  06:00 PM ET

Don't hold your breath, strange things happen in NY. They're still only one key injury away from missing the playoffs.
