With less than a week before free agents can sign contracts, Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower has inquired about former LSU and Hornets forward Brandon Bass, a league source said Thursday afternoon. The Hornets are also interested in veteran power forward/center Joe Smith, but his Los Angeles-based agent, Dan Fegan, could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon. In addition, the Hornets have inquired about free agent frontcourt players Mikki Moore, Maceo Baston and Jake Voskuhl, all are unrestricted free agents.

Good addition if it happens - BASS

I thought Hornets were giving away freebies as they are cash strapped... it's nice to know they're looking for something - good marketing ploy.

There are only 2 or 3 players that I would LOVE to see the Mavs keep and Bass is one of them. His game is improving yearly and he can have a tough mentality to his game when he wants. He's just flat out fun to watch in my opinion. I hope Dallas finds a way to keep him on board.

its not going to happened, he will stay in dallas

yes- nice role player- but you cannot invest significant $$ in him

And for all we're banging on Cuban- as it stands right now- they
are going to have MAJOR $$$$ available for the 2010 FA run

Well how would you get with the Spurs MLE??? Bass,Sheed,Gortat or Ariza??? of course implying they are available and would accept the MLE and considering the Spurs only need is a decent backup center everything else we have....???

July 3, 2009  04:34 PM ET

They should go after Gortat or the Birdman. They already have an all-star PF in West. They need hustle guys at the 5 position

Now I know what NO is trying to do, sign RFA Bass for $ 7.5m, then do a sign-n-trade with DALLAS Bass & Stackhouse for Chandler & Posey, then cut Stack before Aug 1, for only $2m of his $ 7.25m Save $ 9m or so, Slide West to center, Bass at PF, then get Vet min players as backups like Jake V.

Dude - they are looking at him without a sign and trade. I think you missed it.

Bass is going nowhere. Cuban will be stupid enough to let him go. All he needs to do is let Kidd go. Get a big man who can score and rebound ....to replace Damp and get Miller at PG....Dallas will beat Spurs left and right. Without Bowen, to do all those nasty plays, SA wouldn't be able stop Dirk and Co.

I hope this happens but the Mavs management will always find a way to mess things up.

Back to the Hornets article, WTF are they doing? They had him before and now they want him back? If I were Bass I would stay in Dallas or maybe go to OKC to help the young team out. OKC fans loves Bass and he will really fit in and feel welcome in OKC.

Dallas cannot afford to lose anything that remotely resembles a physical player on that front line. To hell with 2010. The Mavs need Bass and also to get a deal done for Gortat.

agreed- BUT....Bass is not going to really 'improve' them
they are treading water....and in the west with SA & LA making
MAJOR upgrades- I just don't see either Gortat (who I like)
and Bass as big enough improvements that they can challenge
the big boys

You know my feelings regarding the cap-
A team that HAS talent- like the Mavs-
SHOULD try and improve now & not gut-

agreed. Gortat and Bass are going to lift Mavs but they good role players at this moment. Dallas needs a huge improvement in low post and not in 2010, they need that now.

July 4, 2009  11:28 AM ET

I meant not going to improve.

July 4, 2009  02:55 PM ET

Seems to be on the upswing in his carreer. Seems he will grow and do nothing but get better. It would be great for NO but Dallas, what are they thinking to let such a young tallent go as they are trying to convince a has been like Kidd to stay?

July 4, 2009  04:16 PM ET

Brandon Bass is on a lot of team's radars. The athletic but undersized Bass is a tough defender and rebounder who continues to improve his offensive game. Playing for less than a $1 million in Dallas, he's set for a hefty pay raise.

Of course, most of the teams have about the same amount to spend, so Bass can weigh his options. He will likely try to find a team where he can get the opporunity to start. He's not a big drop from a Paul Millsap type and will be available at half the cost.
