Braves in market for shortstop?

Bobby Cox is at wit's end with shortstop Yunel Escobar, whose effort doesn't always match his ability. It wouldn't be shocking if the Braves shuffled shortstops before the All-Star break, perhaps adding a veteran such as the Astros' Miguel Tejada, the A's Orlando Cabrera or the Orioles' Cesar Izturis, who is a couple of weeks away from getting back on the field after appendicitis.

You can have Lugo in a few weeks for the veterans minimum when he gets released. But, he sucks.

This would be a mistake. None of those mentioned above would be an upgrade. It must be a personality issue which the Braves are well known for not tolerating.

I certainly hope Atl does'n do what it has done in the past...trade a great young player for a washed up old guy who comes, stays the rest of the year and moves on for more money. Hadn't Atl done this trick too many times...J D Drew et al.

there gonna have to give up a decent pitcher to get any of them the best fit would be cesar

July 5, 2009  12:50 PM ET

Please send the Astros some great players for Tejada. Please.

July 5, 2009  01:18 PM ET

Hey, since the Pirates will give you any player, apparently for nothing but the 5th or 6th best player in your minor leagues (like in the McLouth trade), feel free to take Jack Wilson. Hey, we'll throw in Freddie Sanchez and Adam LaRoche, too. It won't even cost you anything. Hey, you are our friends. We kicked away the 92 NLCS to you and have never been the same sense.
Anyone seen Sid Bream?

Only way I give up Escobar is for a package liek that

July 5, 2009  02:50 PM ET

Why don't you try to get Nick Green back?

July 5, 2009  03:10 PM ET

I don't think Escobar is going anywhere. I live in Atlanta -- trust me, this guy is more talented than all three of those guys, all of whom are very talented. Bobby had the same problem with Andruw Jones years ago, and he solved it. Yunel will work out, and Cox will work it out, because Escobar doesn't have a problem with Cox -- he has problems with his own attitude and approach. Cox's patience and experience are the ideal solution for that. No need to dump a clutch hitter with great range and a truly great arm over this.

The Braves have one of the best records of any team in MLB with regard to trades. Escobar will NOT be dealt off for some washed up or never-was SS. The previous poster covered the Braves' dealings with attitude problems accurately. Name any young player dealt by the Braves who has gone on to greatness. The closest example will be the Teixiera deal; the Braves dealt two promising players blocked at the major league level for a desperately needed premier bat with 1.5 affordable years left. It was a worthy gamble that didn't quite work, but I wouldn't take it back.

And they even did ok in the Tex trade in the end because they ended up with a young starting 1B out of the deal.
