Browns questioning new coordinator?

Eric Mangini's biggest gamble is Brian Daboll, the new offensive coordinator. It may be a gutsy choice that pays off, or Daboll could suffer some of the rookie problems that come in the first year of calling plays under pressure. Word from some of the players is Daboll's personality doesn't exactly ooze warmth, but he does know a lot of football.

Browns players, what do you want? "He has a great offensive scheme, but he doesn't care about my feelings." Shut up and play football. That would be a change from previous years.

If knowing a lot of football qualifies someone to become offensive coordinator in the NFL, a lot of us here can apply the next time a team has an opening. Prima donnas fill all the skill positions in the NFL and you need to handle them with kids' gloves. That guy Mangini took to run the offense won't last long, especially if the Browns can't score early.

Why do announcers on tv refer to receivers etc as "skill players"? Is there any player without skills? Does someone running a predetermined pattern really have more skill than an all pro center?

If the players biggest complaint with their new OC is "He's not nice" they have no problems and should cash their massive paychecks and shut up?

Wasn't there a post on FN some time ago about rookie Browns players complaining about an "excessively long" bus trip? Come on, boys, coach doesn't have to be all warm and fuzzy. Shut up and play the game. They need to establish some work ethic in that locker room.

"doesn't exactly ooze warmth"..??..Guess these guys would not like playing for Head Coaches like Belichik or Coughlin..

At the new and improved Cleveland Browns, we want everyone to feel like winners. Even if you don't have the ability that other teams have, we want you to know that you're special. Your win loss record is not an indicator of what kind of person you are. Get out there and try your best. And, if you lose, that's ok. We will still cheer you on!

I agree but as Stranger said in post 2 there are so many egos and primas on the team you almost have to be "player friendly". If he is as smart as they say he will adapt to a certain extent. You can't be an azzkizzing OC and expect to succeed.

However, as a coordinator you have a little more room to operate IMO. A HC needs to be the bad cop to the OC good cop. The OC spends more time with the players anyway. Wades a good example. Loved and successful as a DC but no respect and marginal results as an HC.

Exactly. Do they want to win or be cuddled? Sheesh.

Nice. If they lose a tough game, does Mangini take them all out for sno-cones? Will they all get little wannabe Lombardi trophies at the end of the year?

i think the D coordinator rob ryan was an excellent pickup by mankok.
it was a mistake firing chudzinsky

It will all come down to Mangina making the calls on O anyway. be careful Cleveland...whatever facet of the game is strongest, they will avoid the most. It's confusing, I know...you're in my prayers.

Mangani is a tool

July 5, 2009  02:05 PM ET

And since when do Browns players know what it takes to win? That's right they don't, their feelings matter more.

July 5, 2009  02:15 PM ET

Browns should be worried about the new coach, Mr. Mangenius.....

July 5, 2009  02:35 PM ET

I have to admit, I was excited when he first came to the Jets. But after a few years of questionable decisions and bad play calling, I'm glad Mangenius is Cleveland's problem now. Good luck with that!

But it does call to the mind the question of what exactly that ooze is.

The sagacious verbal economy one expects of of men under arms. Our young soldier digs deep into definition depth chart. (Third string to be exact.)

Chudzinski had to go and he was too much in love with probably the biggest flash in the pan of NFL history, D.A. (Dumb ****) and his terrible decision making. I am glad that Brady Quinn is finally getting a chance and I think like many other Browns fans he will create an improvement in the offense this season.

I would not sell Mangini short. He was making the Jets better, he never wanted Favre, but to say Favre was the reason the Jets were one of the best teams in the NFL for two thirds of last season and not give Mangini some of that credit is not fair..If he had Pennington all year, I think things would have ended differently. Cleveland got themselves a good coach and front office personnel. It will show on the field too.
