Leafs-Bruins deal off table

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is not about to book Phil Kessel a flight to Toronto. Burke reported yesterday that a deal between the Leafs and the Boston Bruins, which would have seen Toronto defenseman Tomas Kaberle head to Boston for the high-scoring Kessel, is not on the table anymore, at least not at this point. In fact, Burke added that interest in Kaberle's services, once very high, has cooled down.

We had a deal, we don't anymore, we may get one again, then again maybe not.

Burke counted his chickens before they hatched...

I thought the deal was done a long time ago, way back when they wanted the 7th overall pick and Kaberle.

Apparently not.

yeah this deal has been off for since the draft ended

It was just a ploy to light a fire under Kessel. They can't afford to trade scorer's away.

nah scratching him in a couple playoff games last year did that

This would be a bad trade for the Bruins. Scorers are harder to come by than defensemen. The Bruins have some young defensemen in the minors. They also missed Andrew Ference with his broken leg. Finding a replacement to fill Kessels role would be tough.

I didn't understand this trade from the beginning. Kaberle and the 7th pick straight up for Kessel? That's not an even deal to me. Kaberle for Kessel straight up in more like it. Still, this deal doesn't make a lot of sense for either team. The Bruins need a scorer like Kessel and the Leafs barely have anything on the backend besides Kaberle. Why give away a key part of your team if it only decimates that position?
Dumb GMs.

Scorers are easier to find than puck moving defenseman. Puck moving defenseman is the hardest thing to find in hockey.

Not exactly a new story.

Or the media counted those chickens...
Don't think Burke did.

D-men are WAY harder to come by then a goal scorer. Chiarelli knows that good teams are built from the net out, and having Thomas, they have a good, highly competitive goalie who with Chara solidifies Boston's back end. However, Kaberle would drastically improve Boston's puck movement and transition game, leading to more offence. Kaberle will be in his prime for another fur to five years. Kessel is younger, but is still finding his way in the league. He certainly has speed and a knack to score, but his defensive play and physical play is inconsistent.

With Lucic, Bergeron, Savard, Kobasew, Krecji - they have enough goal-scoring. Kabby would be a perfect fit in Beantown, while Kessel would give the Leafs a legit 1st line talent up front.

It would be a good deal for both sides. The sticker is what Chiarelli is asking along with Kabby. I wouldn't go anywhere near including a 1st rounder if I am Burke. Kaberle is an all-star calibre defender, one of the best outlet and tape to tape d-men in the league. He is a solid PP guy and a great skater in the new "no-touch" NHL. It's not like Kabby is 39 years old.

Proof that good Dman are harder to find than scorers: Calgary sent a good reliable Dman (Leopold) & 3rd rounder to Florida for the NEGOTIATING rights to JayBo and they let Cammalleri walk.

The reason why Burke is willing to move Kaberle is to free up cap space for him to make moves now & in the future. Kessel is a good young forward. Burke obviously want the Swede goalie so he needs to make room for him. Give Burke 3 years before you judge him.

You didn't see him dangle Schenn to try to move up in the draft or to get a goalscorer did you? Why???? Cause he is a a young stud Dman

I could see Burke holding on to Kaberle until the trading deadline and then getting a high draft choice. He's in no hurry. He wants to tank the season anyway so that he can get a top three pick next year (although I don't think he'd admit that publicly--then again, it's Brian Burke...). Help me out people, who's next year's "Tavares?' I don't follow Junior Hockey as much as I should.

This is what happens when you try to do all your business through the media. Had Burke not "leaked" this rumour out, I bet it would be a done deal already, but Chiarelli doesn't do business that way, and probably backed off, rather than get bullied into the deal. Burke had better watch himself or he'll be ostracized by the rest of the league's GMs, making all the deals he tells the media he is going to make pretty much impossible. Can't make trades if other teams don't answer the phones - and why answer the phone when you can just read his trade offers in the paper?

You'd think that Chia would want a solid scorer in return. Kaberle doesnt make sense. He's a heck of a d-man but who would fill Kessels spot on the top line? Ryder? I guess so eh?Our line-up would be :Savard-RyderKrejci-BitzBergeron-KobasewHopefully he realizes that he has a good thing happening in Boston and accepts a slight pay-cut. Sign him for a one year 4 million dollar deal and take him to arbitration the year after that and then he'll get his true value. We still need this guy to finish off our scoring chances even though he doesnt hussle every game.

Bitz on second line? I think you are forgetting about Wheeler. More likely to look like this as of now...

Lucic-Savard-Ryder
Sturm-Krejci-Wheeler
Recchi-Bergeron-Kobasew
Begin-Bitz-Thornton

just to clarify... its was the negotiating rights to leopold and a 3rd for jbo negotiating rights.... the only sure thing was the 3rd.... but your dead on about them letting cammalleri walk and putting all their effort into signing j-bo......
If burke was trying to clear cap space he keep kaberle.... his salary is 4.25mil..... an absolute steal for a player of his caliber.... kessel is rumoured to want 5 mil or more.... so thats not saving cap space. If he moves kaberle its because he doesnt fit burke defensive idea.... burke like big mean dmen.... but i also think he realizes that kabby is the closest thing the leafs have to a scott neidermeyer and he wont give him up cheap..... i take kabby 7 days a week over kessel....

July 6, 2009  10:28 AM ET

I wonder how Boston can keep him though.

I agree whole-heartedly. Did you see him at the draft? He was miked for Christ's sakes! What GM is going to talk to him when it's going to heard by everyone viewing the draft. Take Gainey as an example. His response to Burke floating some rumour about the Habs was "OK." This guy should be the GM of the Kings or the Rangers, he loves the limelight so much.
