LPGA commissioner facing player mutiny?

Last Thursday a dozen or so top players convened for dinner and it was LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens who got roasted, as the players aired their various grievances about her leadership. If she can't win back her most important constituents Bivens's days as commish could be numbered. The dinner took place in Sylvania, Ohio, site of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, a day after word spread that the Kapalua Classic, scheduled for Oct. 10-15, had been canceled because the title sponsor pulled out, and that the LPGA may have as few as 10 U.S.-based events in 2010. Sources close to the LPGA who were not at the dinner indicated that the conversation resulted in a letter to LPGA president Michelle Ellis expressing a loss of faith in Bivens's leadership and policies.

Maybe she could add a few events in South Korea...

Seems Bivens has made the LPGA more irrelevant than it ever has been. Nice goin Lassie. You would think with the number of attractive ladies out there tee'ing it up, they would be able to find sponsors.

Which only goes to prove that the women have more courage than the men do.

How many guys on the pro circuit have the guts to get together and give Finchem the lambasting that he deserves?

LPGA tour: heros
PGA tour: cowards

Maybe if the commish quits now, she won't be suspended for a year....

I think the LPGA has more courage because of the equation
PGA tour: Rich
LPGA tour: Not nearly so rich
As long as Tiger keeps playing at a high level the PGA is pretty safe, although individual tournaments, specifically the ones Tiger and top players bypass, are at risk. As long as that's the case, I doubt most PGA players will be interested in rocking the boat. Ice is right though. The LPGA has plenty of marketable assets if they had any clue about how to market them. And for fans of the game, the ladies play some beautiful golf. They need a commish who will understand how to market their stars. Clearly, Bivens is not that person.

Well, she surely gutted herself by the move last year to ban non-English speaking players.

That was her death-knell.

July 6, 2009  02:33 PM ET

And, I'm only hoping that the PGA tour players will soon recognize that Finchem is just a puppet in the same vein that Bush was. Where as Karl Rove was deemed "Bush's Brain" you could pretty much say the same thing about many people who lead Finchem around like Palmer and the "V" groove thing.

Finchem just sheepishly, cowardly and blindly follows in the footsteps of his mentor Deane Beman, he who created that monstrosity known as the all-exempt tour. I agree with Jakester that the big money on the men's tour keeps them quiet whereas Bivens already has a foot out the door with her English-only bonehead idea and the loss of events on the LPGA. If the economy keeps tanking though, the guys will start losing sponsors and events too and when that happens, let's hope they grill Finchem about it.

Topless I tell ya!

July 6, 2009  05:40 PM ET

Maybe she needs to find some other sponsors and seek some cooperation from the players to market and sell to a broader audience; really, Owens Corning ?? How about Victoria Secrets!

That particular rule was, literally, shocking. The negative fallout from making a rule like that was so clearly obvious that I can't believe she even thought of it, much less actually implementing it. I'm actually surprised, in our PC world, that she wasn't ousted after that debacle.

I agree. I am really amazed by alot of what has transpired.

The fact that Bivens, Finchem or even Fehrety haven't been tanked is almost unbeliveable.

Have you guys picked up on how the CBS sports administrators have tried to present Fehrety in a "kinder and genteler" manner with is "Take Five with Fehrety"?

He shows the audience how he is really just a loveable puppy by being at a zoo or at an art museum.

Although he is a very funny guy. The ruse just doesn't work for me.

He has already tipped his hand with the "elevator" column and no matter what CBS does to "soften" his image it can't undo that. He has clearly become victim of the popular fallicies of the right and the damage has been done.

Again, with apologies to Helen, I'm surprised he picked the lone star state to live in.

David, think about moving to Rhode Island.

Well when more than half the tour can't speak English, that doesn't exactly draw in the sponsors... Especially when they play in pro-ams before the tourneys and the players can't even communicate to the people paying the big bucks to keep the tour going...

From a marketing standpoint, that is a problem and it's reasonable that the LPGA would address it. What isn't reasonable is the solution that they tried. This is a problem that needs to be handled behind closed doors.
