Winfield still waiting on Vikings offer

Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield, known for his knack of anticipating the moves of opposing receivers, didn't envision his current situation. "I didn't expect to be in July without a deal," Winfield said. "Personally, I'm a little disappointed. They consider me a core player, but they're not showing me that." Breaking his months-long silence, Winfield told the Pioneer Press he had been hearing privately the same positive comments team officials had been saying about him publicly.

Don't feel bad, Antoine. I think the Vikings' front office is focused on a different player right now. . . a quarterback, I believe.

He needs to be SIGNED!! He is most under-rated DB in football.

July 6, 2009  08:07 AM ET

Is he still under contract?

July 6, 2009  08:08 AM ET

The Vikings front office doesn't know how much money they'll have left if they decide to sign Favre, so they can't sign anyone else.

(This is another example of where Favre's indecisiveness/selfishness is affecting more than just himself, as the Jets have learned.)

You are exactly right.

Don't forget about Green Bay!

It expires this season. He would be an unrestricted free agent next season. The began negotiations back in January...the front office keeps saying that they are going to sign him...Winfield is not asking to be the highest paid CB...just in the top 10, which he certainly is. It has nothing to do with Favre, since the Vikings will sign him to a 1 year contract with the option for a 2nd. Plus, the Vikings have significant CAP room.

July 6, 2009  08:44 AM ET

Is he an unrestricted free agent right now? Why aren't more teams moving in on this guy? Pioli get the move on, we could really use Winfield!

July 6, 2009  09:26 AM ET

They better wake up. And fast, this guy is a GREAT player.

July 6, 2009  09:30 AM ET

Outstanding cover guy, and he lays the wood to people when they do catch the ball.

July 6, 2009  09:47 AM ET

They better sign him. If they piss him off he could play out the last year of his deal and leave town. He'd be picked up immediately.

If this is true, and I believe you are correct then the Vikes should at least let this guy know what is going on. May hurt his feelings but so's not keeping him clued in as to whats going on.

July 6, 2009  10:08 AM ET

It doesn't matter either way, the Vikings suck.

He IS signed. He is in the sixth year of a $34 million contract that pays him $6 million this year. He will be 32 next month. He is HOLDING out. The article makes it sound like the Vikings are doing something wrong. They are not...His $6 million is already counted against the cap, the Vikings have ( I believe ) $17 million in free cap space. It really is not about Favre. They just want to make sure he is still an elite DB this year. If so , they can tag him or work on a deal.

July 6, 2009  11:02 AM ET

look...we need this guy NOW. the defense would suffer a huge blow w/o him in there. sign him to a reasonable 3 year deal. even in the third year of the contract he will play at a high level. i don't think he will be hard to deal with...JUST GET IT DONE!!! Frazier has this defense playing at a high level ...he is more experienced himself now....the defense is a veteran group with the exception of Johnson at Safety. this defense can win some close games for us and with the offense being better with Sage or Farve we could make a little run this year. Go Vikes

Is Bart T. Fever going to play defense? Take a lesson from the Texans last year. Score all you want, but you still gotta stop the other guy.

Yeah...I know he is presently under contract. And there is plenty of cap room for a 3 year extension with a nice raise for Winfield. I don't know what else Winfield has to do to prove to the FO that he is an elite corner?? His skills have not slipped even a little bit. He and Darrell Green drink at the same bar it appears.

you got that right!!! that D was pretty good last year and will only be better this year with Henderson back and Allen in his 2nd year here. top brass can't screw around with this defense right now.

OK, but the question is how much does he want and for how long? The Raiders just paid $45 million for three years for an elite CB. Does he see that and want to go there? The Vikings are in control. He is signed, to not show up he loses money and adds another year to the contract. To play out the contract he can be tagged next year for less than he wants..Do yo pay him top money in2012 when he is 35? He will show up in August..

What I've heard is that he is asking for a yearly salary that would put him in the top 10 players in his position, and he wants it for 3 years. He has said he wants to retire a Viking...the FO has said they want to accommodate him.

Again, he has not shown that his skills have diminished, he has never been seriously injured, he works hard, and is a great teammate. Why not sign him to 3 year $17 mil to $20 mil, with two years guaranteed, and the 3rd year an option year. Gives Winfield security as well as the FO time to evaluate his skills during the 2010 season. It gives the coaching staff time to find his replacement. I think that it can be structured to satisfy both sides, if both are serious about Winfield retiring a Viking.
