According to club sources, the Phillies are scheduled to watch Pedro Martinez throw a bullpen session in the Dominican Republic today. The Phillies are still in an exploratory mode, one source said. In other words, a signing is not imminent, or even likely. The team also has had discussions about veteran free-agent Paul Byrd, who posted a 4.60 ERA in 30 starts for the Indians and Red Sox last season.

I would say Pedro is done.....I'm thinking.

Are the Phils really this hard up for pitching?

The Cardinal rotation is in dire need of help, but I wouldn't really want either of these guys.

The Jays are at the point that any warm body is being used as a pitcher. And with all the young kids they keep bringing up, another veteran presence would be a huge lift for the Jays.

nobody mentioned the jays.

Paul Byrd is available?? AWESOME! Where's Joe Roa and Paul Abbott??!!?

July 7, 2009  01:08 PM ET

I'll try out if they're that desperate. I can throw a good 60 mph so I got "Moyer speed" HA! I'd pass on both of these clowns and just call someone up, we have some good pitching prospects in the minors, they're in first place so who needs to spend $5M for what a 22 yr old can do for $300k?

adam eaton, if you're reading this: you suck!

QUOTE(#3):

Pedro, Byrd ? ........who makes this crap up. Pedro has nothing left, and Byrd was a horrible pitcher on a horrible Cleveland team.

The Phillies have already sent people to scout Pedro throwing a simulated game in the DR. He was also scouted during the WBC and scouts reported that he looked the best he's been in two years. So, it's not that people make this crap up. It's that you're too stupid to know what's going on in baseball.

Marcum, Litsch, and McGowan are scheduled back soon I thought?

Pedro threw a fastball the other day and I was unfortunately turned the other way and it hit me - felt lika a mosquito bit me in the arse - not much !!!

July 7, 2009  05:54 PM ET

The Phillies need an experienced arm with Myers out for the season. If they can use one of these guys effectively, who cares how much they get paid? Just give me a winning team (AGAIN!)

July 7, 2009  09:20 PM ET

He might catch on with a team to pitch out of the bullpen, but not a starting job....IMO

July 8, 2009  06:00 AM ET

Has anybody not been labeled "looking at Martinez"?

July 8, 2009  08:46 AM ET

Byrd was OK for Boston last year, Pedro was good...5 years ago.

Pitching must really be thin out there. No minor league prospects at all I guess. Too many teams and not enough pitching.
