Cubs may remain idle at trade deadline

General manager Jim Hendry hinted on Monday the Cubs may not do much at the trading deadline, whether the Ricketts family is officially in control of the team or not. The Cubs have a payroll of just less than $140 million and could use some bullpen help, particularly a left-hander. Hendry hasn't spoken to Ricketts about payroll, and while manager Lou Piniella said he has heard Tom Ricketts is a "fine gentleman and will be a really nice owner," he has yet to meet his potential new boss.

The CUBS will remain IDLE all season, and who cares? Wrigley Field is a DUMP!

You're probably a scumball Sox fan aren't you? Did you jump on that bandwagon recently?

July 7, 2009  10:48 AM ET

If they do anything, they should add to their bullpen, but I'm not sure they have a lot of flexibility.

July 7, 2009  11:02 AM ET

How about a 2B? Fontenot seems better suited to being a spot starter. Another LH relief pitcher might be nice but Marshall appears to be handling that well.

July 7, 2009  11:54 AM ET

Why should they add to their $140 million wasted payroll. No one player could help these losers advance even one series in the post-season. Maybe they should trade Lee for some prospects and look to the future.

I heard one Cub fan speculating they could trade Bradley for a reliever. Come on, what GM would be dumb enough to take a poor performing head case with a $20 to $30 million contract off their hands?

Still upset that no one cares about the sox in Chi town? Get over it and move on.

Jim Hendry will do something. Most of what he has done in his tenure has been productive, however the off-season trade of DeRosa and the signing of Bradley haven't worked out the way he envisioned.

No doubt the pen needs fixing but looks like they will need to stand pat. TenRings, Do you think the birds will make any significant moves besides DeRosa?

Or the Marquis trade. Looks like Hendry ought to sit this one out.

Yeah, at the time I was glad to see him go. But 11 wins is impressive in Colorado. At least we have Randy Wells, who seems to have good stuff and good composure.

Don't sweat it. Marquis will do next to nothing after the break......it's his MO.

As far as the Cards, Wrigley, I'm not sure. They need another starting pitcher and they need a bat, but I doubt they'll be willing to pay for anything significant.

In STL, we keep hearing Holliday in a deal that involves Ludwick, but I'll believe it when I see it. Personally, I'd rather add a pitcher. Our rotation doesn't match up to the Cubs top to bottom.

Wasn't that Holliday/Ludwick deal discussed in the off-season? I thought the major hold-up was the Cardinals unwillingness to sign him to a long term deal.

Yes, it was discussed, and yes the Cards were reluctant to look at a long term deal. The difference now is that Ankiel, Duncan and Ludwick have all performed well below expectations.....so they are a little more desperate to add a bat.

They had a good bat in DeRosa and let him go. I can't see the Cubs making the playoffs if they don't shore up their bullpen and get rid of Bradley.

Can't blame the Cubs for signing Bradley, it's not like he's been a problem child his whole career or anything

Pretty much what I'm thinking !

Bradley's not the problem...though his average is low his OBP is nearly at .380, which is one of the highest on the whole team. He may not be hitting for power but he IS getting on base, and he very much IS trying every day. You might see the mistake in the field of counting outs and assume that he isn't, but you would be wrong...

The problem lies with Soriano, and to a somewhat lesser degree Soto. Soriano is absolutely killing this team and is absolutely GOD AWFUL in the field...

So you have to ask -- Why does Bradley get absolutely KILLED for his salary and for making one mistake in the field -- albeit a public, bad one -- when there's another OF on this team, in the other corner, making twice as much who, on three consecutive days at The Cell lost a played a routine pop-up into a hit? Where's the collective angst for Soriano?? The hatred? It seems that now he's out of the leadoff spot -- something that was a long time coming, yes -- Cubs fans are willing to ignore that he's been absolutely awful this season, and is the worst defender on the field almost every game.

And the worst part is, his effort is always lacking. If his knee is hurting him that badly, he needs to be put on the DL. If it's not, then he needs to show some kind of hustle. Something. Anything.
