05:02 AM ET 07.13 | Chicago insiders say it wasn't GM Dale Tallon's fault that qualifying offers to the club's restricted free agents got bungled, leaving the likes of Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker potential unrestricted free agents (pending a grievance filed by the Players Association). The offers, though mailed on time, didn???t reach all recipients by the June 30 deadline. Why? According to one source who has regular dealings with the Chicago front office, club president John McDonough had a hand in delaying the mailing of the offers. Meanwhile, Tallon offered himself up for the blame.

The NHL CBA has rules that you can't mail them. That is why they messed up, you aren't allowed to mail them, only fax them or something else, but not mailing.

It's a fax only to the NHL offices and mail to the rest. Needless to say, I don't think we'll see FedEx or UPS as a Blackhawks sponsor any time soon.

They are allowed to use a courier service like Fedex or UPS, but you can not use standard mail. That is what the Hawks did, and that is why it was so dumb. They knew that they were going to qualify these guys, so why did they wait, just get it over with early and it does not matter. The only problem was the time these guys received their offers. The NHLPA did not greive the delivery, although they may have if they were delivered on time.
And can I just add a big "I TOLD YOU SO" to all those who said this would not end up cost the Hawks Kane, Toews, or Keith. Someone with money will make an offer the Hawks just can't match.

They will all sign new contracts before it gets that far.

They will all want their money, and they all can not get it with the Hawks.
The only way it works out is to get Kane and Keith signed, and hope that Toews will take less to stay. He might be the only one that will work on.

You're the exact reason people think there should be no hockey in AZ!!! So please sh... the f... up if you have nothing intelligent to say, thanks!
Pittsburgh Penguins = 2008 Prince of Wales Trophy = 2009 Stanley Cup Champions and one of the most promising lineup in the league for a repeat. Lame, right?

Ouch. Apparently Tallon did take the fall. CBS Sportsline is reporting Tallon is fired.

Wow. Don't mess with the mail, I guess. This pretty much cost them Kane or Toews in a few years, though. That and the ridiculous Hossa contract of course.

Like I said yesterday on a similar thread, its funny how the league looked at it and said yes, you made a mistake but we aren't going to punish you. Then the union steps in screaming and crying and now Dale Tallon is out of a job. I still think that all this "outrage" is a thinly disguised league conspiracy to keep the Red Wings at the top and ensure they don't get any competition from the rest of the division. I hope all the guys who were crying about getting their qualifying offers in the mail a day late get traded next year to Tampa, Atlanta, or Phoenix. Unless of course Kane goes on the trading block, then I'm sure Detroit will snatch him right up. Hmmm, Scotty Bowman does work in the Chicago front office now and hmmm he just hired his son to replace Tallon...

You are hopelessly lost on this whole thing. A conspiracy to keep a division under the rule of one team? Are you crazy? The NHL hardly promotes the Red Wings, despite them being one of the premier teams in the league. It's like if MLB wouldn't promote the Yankees. And much the same way with the youth movement marketing push for the Pens, why wouldn't the league want Chicago to come out on top in the division? Idiotic.
As for the blunder, read Jim Kelly's piece over at SI, it will help you. The reason the NHL office isn't up in arms is because they received their required forms in the manner necessary, a fax. However, the NHLPA and the player's agent are to get a copy of the paperwork sent to them by courier; the 'Hawks sent them regular mail. The NHLPA is in place to make their constituents money. It is possible they could have made more money on the FA market instead of the deals they received. As Kelly states, the due dates are in place so that the players can know where they stand and if they can negotiate with other teams, being that most of the "market's money is consumed in the first 24 to 48 hours of the free agency period." If the players find out late they have not been qualified, then most probably they have missed out on the best chances to sign good deals, as the majority of teams would have spent most of their spare change.
