Did Watson prove golf isn't sport?

08:07 AM ET 07.21 | We should all be thankful for Tom Watson. To you, he's a gentleman, good sport and inspirational story. To me, he's a chance to once again beat a drum I've been pounding for years: Golf isn't a sport. The amount of athleticism required to play golf is about the same as it is to be a good bowler. How else do you explain that a man who is nearly 60 came extremely close to winning a golf major? This story might be inspirational but for the sport of golf it should also be mortifying. Actually, it's a tad embarrassing. What does it say about a sport when it takes a playoff round to finally beat Watson despite Watson's age? It says golf isn't a sport, that's what it says.

this is a pathetic exuse for a "sports writer"......

The guy who wrote this is pale, overweight, and hasn't performed a lick of exercise in who knows how long. He probably grew up playing with his light saber and thinking he looked cool in his braces. Wow, what a ignorant/arrogant 'story'.

Notice the jagoff who wrote this didn't have the sack to put his name to it. This guy (I'll assume it's a guy) has probably never strapped a jock on in his life. In fact, he's probably so slothful and overweight he can't see his **** with out the help of a full-length mirror. I doubt he's changed his drawers since the US Open from all the video & computer games he's been playing. Guy couldn't do the WALKING associated with a professional golf event, forget about swinging a club and striking a ball.

I expect following posters to be more brutal and excoriating in their assessment of waht was written.

Can I post now?

K, whomever wrote this article should know, us golfers don't much care if you call it a sport or an activity. What it is, is something that can totally embarrass the worlds greatest ATHLETE. I suspect the writer of this article is a bit upset that he lost 5 balls on the first hole on the way to shooting 140. call it what you want sweet pea, u probably suck at it. So stick to football or basketball, its much much easier.

Easier? Mentally yes, physically no. As much as I would shoot about an 85-90 my first time out on a new course and enjoy myself, I guarantee that you would be be done playing the first time you caught a ball over the middle.

Golf, while I believe it is a sport, just takes a different type of athlete. Think of it as like a scale, a mental-to-physical ratio if you will. Golf is obviously on the more mental side of the scale, and Shotput/Javelin more physical

Sounds like you're just making "sport" of a 59 year old icon of golf. Like making sport of others to make yourself feel important and smart. Maybe all your beating and pounding your "drum" (pud) has been a form of sport to you as well. What is embarrassing is that this kind of spew gets written.

July 21, 2009  10:12 AM ET

What the British open showed was the greatness of Tom Watson and why he was and is one of the top 10 men to ever play golf.I really had hoped for a victory but It was still a terrific showing.

July 21, 2009  10:20 AM ET

This "writer" probably has just enough hand-eye coordination to shovel his food into his mouth. To compare bowling to golf shows his ignorance. Golf is a far more athletic activity than bowling, try walking 18 sometime. The game probably seems easy sitting in his mom's basement playing a video version.

Golf was never a sport. It's an activity. Even the worst basketball player is more athletic than the most athletic golfer.

That doesn't mean that the best basketball player in the world is going to beat Tiger Woods. Or even Tom Watson.

This cracks me up, Who cares what you call it! I love to play golf along with other sports but I have never been as good at golf than I am with the others. Hitting a golf ball to its intended target is one of the hardest things to do. Sure going over the middle takes great hand-eye coordination, agility and balls but it is totally different than golf.
All sports and activities bring something new to the table, A good football player needs a certain set of skills and a good golfer needs another type of skills. So call it what you like, I think it says something when all these professional athletes retire from there selective sport and then take up golf because it allows them to compete with their greatest opponent, Themselves!
Well gotta go, I have a tee time!

Oh and one last thing, THE GUY WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE IS GETTING THE RESPONSE HE WANTED!

July 21, 2009  10:48 AM ET

As often as this topic comes up it just goes to prove how vapid so many people are.

And, how ironic that you hear the two contrasting suggestions made that golf isn't a sport and Showboat is the greatest athlete of all time.

Showboat isn't the greatest athlete of all time. He only can play golf. If you want to talk about guys who excel in the broadest range of sports, there is only one--Jim Thorpe.

Okay, that's settled. On to the next stupid suggestion that one pasttime is a sport and another one isn't. First, nobody cares and second only a fool (and I mean a real dumb-ass) would try to make a case for what is a sport and what isn't.

If one clicks on the link at the bottom of the thread (in this case CBSSports.com) you will be taken to the original article and who the author was. In this case, Mike Freeman.

So Mike doesn't look pale to me. But I'm underwhelmed at his thought process.

Freeman, if you want to impress us then do a dance on Fehrety's face in your column (which you know he deserves) or be brave and talk about Finchem.

But don't give us the Budweiser and hot dog mentality fluff.

Okay?

I bet he plays golf.

Golf requires(if you desire to be good) a mental toughness that basketball players are not equipped with. Charles Barkley can make a pressure packed free-throw with the game on the line in front of 20,000 screaming fans and yet can't hit a fairway an acre wide with 1,000 fans, no pressure and nobody screaming.

This is also why retired basketball players never win the Reno/Tahoe celebrity golf tournament.
Hockey and baseball players have better hand/eye coordination(required for their sport)and thus make better golfers......see Dan Quinn, Brett Hull or this years repeat winner Rick Rhoden.

....so I'm gonna have to conclude that basketball players can jump higher and run faster but good golfers are better athletes.

July 21, 2009  11:10 AM ET

Watson didn't prove golf isn't a sport. That was proven long ago by fat dudes in ugly pants. Golf is about as athletic as bowling, horseshoes, darts. Golf is less of a sport than disc golf.

actually Tiger Woods bench presses 315, i doubt many hoops players can bench half that.
