Why Nash re-signed with Suns

Steve Nash, a two-time NBA MVP, agreed Monday to a two-year, $22 million contract extension that reaffirms him as the face of the Suns. Nash had to weigh his prospects in 2010 free agency against the security of an extension with Phoenix. The Suns' style that suits him best was reinstituted, but they don't appear to be title contenders. However, agent Bill Duffy said Nash believes the Suns can immediately return to the elite after the team re-signed his friend, Grant Hill; traded Shaquille O'Neal; added Channing Frye and Earl Clark; and did not trade Amare Stoudemire.

He just did it because from now on and until he is out, he would make the calls about roster transactions ... and this is another "fantastic move" from Kerr ... he wont fall alone.

Nash is past his prime if anyone thinks he's gonna lead the Suns to a title in 2 years then they are smoking crack:)

He may lead em to the lottery but Championship , NOT !!!

They don't even appear to be a playoff team...

Why Nash signed?

Where else is he gonna get 22 mil at this point in his career? They're not going to contend, so this is his warm handshake "Thanks for everything Steve" deal. Hopefully they can use this two years to have him mentor his replacement. If so, its not a bad deal for a team going no place.

All those moves and still they will not play defense.

WHEN DID THEY EVER PLAY DEFENSE?

Why Nash re-signed with Suns? Cos nobody else will pay a 36 year old point guard that doesn't play defense and also has a bad back 22million. Only in Phoenix.

But hey.. Kobe, Duncan and Melo must be excited... another irrelevant team is always good news.

I can't even believe I'm writing this but I actually agree with you. Who else would pay Nash that much money? No one.

As I said the other day-
not sure why they resign Nash & trade Oneal...
they are a WORSE team today than prior to trading shaq
Nash is still a top pg- but if they are were planning on making
a run NOW - why re-sign him ?

yawn...ticket sales

July 21, 2009  09:17 AM ET

Personally , I don't disagree with re-signing Nash. Even with his limitations on defense, he's still among the leagues best point guards. Having said that, I think the weed in Phoenix must really be good. There can be no other explanation for the Suns thinking they will be a better team without Shaq.

July 21, 2009  09:36 AM ET

Nash just wants to move up the assists ladder now. What better team to do it than a fast paced team that plays no defense?

July 21, 2009  10:27 AM ET

The Suns won't contend for a title but to get 11 million reasons a year to stay in a place you are loved, especially considering you are approaching the downside of your career, is reason enough to stay.

Can't knock Nash for agreeing to the extension.

Wow.
Of course, Nash is saying that with Frye, Hill, Amare, and Clark, Suns will be 'elite' now. How else could he have sold himslef for that huge check? Being realistic? Nope!

He didn't mention Richardson in making Suns contenders. Does it mean he is out-going too?

It is the old run and shoot style, the raining 3s, the fancy dunks, the high scores and the fast wins (and the games against Spurs in hopes of Suns winning) that sold tickets.

they will make the playoffs as a #7 or #8 seed and get annielated by the Spurs or Lakers.....and it has nothing to do with the Sun's moves....simply put the Rockets are done and the Hornets and Jazz did not improve.....so that leaves two or three spots open for mediocrity....

Good point... I think the Hornets may rise quite a bit based just on the injury plagued year they suffered, but other then that you may be right on putting the Suns at 8
