Angels shopping for ace

06:37 AM ET 07.24 | Angels owner Arte Moreno said the club remains interested in acquiring an ace starter and has not heard anything that would preclude the pursuit of the likes of Toronto's Roy Halladay and Cleveland's Cliff Lee. However, a trade for a veteran reliever appears more likely. The Angels tried but failed to land Rafael Betancourt, traded Thursday from Cleveland to Colorado.

Lee is not an ace....

speaking as a yankee fan....halladay on the angels, scares the el crapola out of me.

July 24, 2009  09:31 AM ET

The Angels just seem to have the Yankees number for some reason and getting Halladay would only further widen that advantage.

July 24, 2009  09:58 AM ET

even if they get halladay, they will still lose in the first round of the playoffs!

Halladay 2008 & 2009 to date: 378 innings, 2.76 ERA

Lee 2008 & 2009 to date: 368.1 innings, 2.79 ERA

#2 pitcher at best

Leads the AL in innings pitched and has the 6th best ERA.

What is misleading is his win-loss totals. The Tribe's bullpen has not been able to help out the starters so this skews his totals. I think Lee is a solid starter and so do the Indians so he is not going to come cheap.

July 24, 2009  11:29 AM ET

You're right, wins-losses is a silly stat to look at if you want to figure out how good a pitcher is. Wakefield -- tied for the AL lead in wins with a 4.31 ERA -- and Lee -- 6-9 with a 3.17 ERA -- are opposite examples of that.

You're also right about the Indians' bullpen being epically bad. What's odd, though, is that Lee's problem really hasn't been the bullpen -- they've blown only two win opportunities for him, one each against the Royals and Cubs.

His major issue has been run support. In 10 of his 21 starts, he's gotten 2-runs or less of support and, in almost 60% of his starts they've scored 3 or fewer runs. This is strange because the Indians are averaging almost 5 runs per game.

I suppose, this is a sort of regression to the mean. While he was amazing last year, a 22-3 win/loss record is just ridiculous.

Point is, over the last sixteen months, the list of pitchers in the AL that have performed at the level he has is very short.

Very true, and you're right the bullpen hasn't been his problem. His numbers are going to demand solid prospects and nothing short of AAA prospects. I would love to see another trade like Colon brought us but that is probably not going to happen.
Thanks for the good info.

I would hope they'd fetch much more than just AAA talent. I would want to see them land major-league-ready players. Anything else I feel would be waving the white flag for the 2010 season, and I don't think they're in such bad shape that they have to go that far.

Oh man, the el crapola. That is one of the funniest damn things I have heard in a long time. I would like it if we got Halladay, but I think the price might be to high (Weaver). With Lackey getting into form, and Weaver, we have a pretty decent one-two punch at the front of our rotation. God forbid Santana finds his way back. THEN we would be scary for anyone.

This coming forma cowgirl fan. At least Angels make the playoffs, can you say the same for the STrangers.

July 24, 2009  01:57 PM ET

Glad the Yanks resisted this temptation... gotta hold onto Hughes/Joba for a Halladay run.

Maybe the deal with the Yanks should have been Ian Kennedy and one of the catching prospects...the Indians are hoping someone comes along and over commits to get Lee.
He is a very good pitcher, but the Yanks should not part with Hughes or Joba for him.

When you have Willis and Aybar batting 3rd.... you should get a HITTER!!!

The Angels have scored the second most runs in baseball.

Their offense actually scored more runs per game than the Phillies.

July 24, 2009  03:25 PM ET

Speaking as long time Angel fan this year reminds me so much of 2002. Seems like no matter how many runs we are down we come from behind and win. I like our chances as we are if
Arredondo gets back in form and Santana can recapture his form we'll be just fine, if anything get a little help for the pen. But the offense is rolling even without Hunter, Guerrero and Rivera just wait till they get back.

I say - instead of an "ace" get two middle of the rotation starters. Less expense and probally more for "pound'' your buck!!!
