09:01 AM ET 07.25 | Was manager Lou Piniella putting pressure on general manager Jim Hendry to make some moves when he said the Cubs could use a "couple more bats" after Tuesday's loss in Philadelphia? "No, I think some of that was tongue in cheek after the game," Hendry said. "We all felt comfortable we had enough bats when we left [ spring training]. We either haven't been as healthy as we'd like, or certainly a lot of guys collectively haven't hit like they can at one time. "It's just the nature of every manager -- you always want something better than what you have if you lose that particular game. ... He didn't mean it to come out like 'me and Jim aren't on the same page.' " Piniella seemed to back off his comment Friday morning, saying Hendry "does as good a job as any GM in baseball."

Lou says "I think Hendry does as good a butcher job as any GM in baseball" "Nobody is better at downgrading a team"

Of course he was putting pressure on Hendry!

"We either haven't been as healthy as we'd like, or certainly a lot of guys collectively haven't hit like they can at one time".................

No kidding! Now figure out a way for them to hit like they are supposed to. Maybe you need to look beyond your AAA batting coach.

As disappointing as Chicago has been, they are still only a game and a half back in their division. While the Cardinals making personnel moves, Chicago better do something while they still have the opportunity.

Hendry's been horrible for the Cubs the past few years. They should have seen it coming back in 2007 when he thought ROB BOWEN was an upgrade over Michael Barrett. And it only took him three months (and 3 hits) to figure out he wasn't, so he traded him for Jason Kendall, who basically performed so well that he was benched as soon as their rookie catcher showed he had any bit of talent. And then in 2008, when he only made a move to counter another move his rivals, the Brewers, made in CC Sabathia, while neglecting a horrible bullpen.

And of course, he's made some real decision "winners" in this off-season, opting for Milton Bradley over Raul Ibanez, Adam Dunn, and Bobby Abreu (which Chicago fans were against even back then before they knew how good they'd all be) and opting for Aaron Miles over Orlando Hudson...you know, cause Orlando Hudson was getting older and wouldn't be able to produce offensively.

If I were a Chicago fan, I'd get "Fire Hendry" chants started every home game until he got the message and left.

Start getting runs. Its hard I know but come on Cubs..dont know how there still hanging in there to tell ya the truth...division is pretty tight so far.

Yeah, NL central is pathetic. Get your Dodgers gear outta storage and start cleaning it up.

Why did I find "that page'' in the shredder ??? One hundred years and counting !!!

July 25, 2009  08:12 PM ET

Lou Piniella is a phony. He always demands his general manger get him "better players" so he can be seen as a brilliant manager. Why can he never win with what he has? Why did he do diddly with the Tampa Bay Rays? Won after he left and got worse with him after he burnt out (while taking their money of course)? Why has he given up (and that is exactly what he has done) two years straight in the playoffs? Why did he demand trades for Heathcliff Slocumb in Seattle thus sacrificing Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek (also Jose Cruz Jr. to Toronto)? Why could he never find a closer in Seattle (built in excuse for failure never b settling on a closer so he can berate the relievers for failures)? Why could he never find a leftfielder in Seattle and instead ran through dozens and never gave Raul Ibanez a chance? Why does nobody point at him for this stuff? Why did he get credit for taking the Reds team Pete Rose built (yes, Pete Rose but lets not admit that) into a chanpionship team that he was never able to repeat. How did he not win a World Series in Seattle with Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Jay Buhner, Tino Martinez, Edgar Martinez, Jamie Moyer, etc.? Why does he never blame himself and always quick to blame the players for failures (he of course is a "magician" when the team wins, though)? Man, do I hate that arrogant, phony sob.

TOO many words - just say it "One Hundred Years and Still Counting" !!!

July 25, 2009  08:41 PM ET

But, I wasn't talking about The Cubs, I was talking about Lou Piniella being a phony, gloryhound, fake. Lou Piniella had input in all of The offseason moves. When they succeed, he would take credit. You think they brought in Bradley without his OK? When he was with the Yankees he tutored the young hitters: Lou is working with Dan Paqua, Mike Pagliarulo, Butch Wynegar, Don Matttingly. The only one who got "better" with his "instruction" was Don Mattingly (surprise!), the others got worse, but Lou was a hitting genius. I hate him. He is a phony7 and his fake temper and getting national commercials because of his phony persona, ugh!

July 26, 2009  03:52 AM ET

He's not a phony ... he's legitimately just trying to raise your blood pressure, dude. And look how successful he is.

July 26, 2009  01:46 PM ET

In addition, why did Pinella run DeRosa out out town for a shabby left handed bat that has bombed big time. It also took Lou two and a half years to pull Soriano out of the leadoff spot, and he has been seen recently patting himself on the back for this sudden brainstorm. Yes, Lou could also be described as overrated. He should step down after this year.

August 26, 2009  07:19 AM ET

Hendry needed to go 2-3 ears ago when he allowed Dusty Baker to diss Steve Stone and Chip Caray, and brought the current bozos into the announcer's booth. The most unforgivable thing Hendry did, however, was to allow DeRosa and Wood to be traded and bring in the current bullpen trash. Agreed, some if it was there last year, but our darling closer, who looks unflappable has blown more games in the shortest period of time then I can believe. And, Lou finally makes a change. Good Grief! Perhaps the Big Z should be floated as trade bait along with Alphonso "I-can only-hit-home-runs-at-certain-times-during-the-year" Soriano. I've been a Cub fan for too many years and have never been more disgusted.
