10:34 AM ET 07.28 | USA forward Freddy Adu has been conditioning at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., in preparation to rejoin Benfica this week. However, the Insider is hearing that at least one Dutch club is interested in acquiring him on loan. He has three years left on his Benfica contract. After last season's bench-sitting experience with Monaco, another loan needs to be with a club "that is going to play him. The [Monaco] situation cannot happen again. It was not good for Freddy. It has to be the right situation," a source close to Adu said.

conditioning at IMG in Fla., i thought he flew back to Portugal?

July 28, 2009  11:05 AM ET

yeah if he left the gc early to go back to benfica, why did he go to fla? i think it'd be great if a team got him and layed him. thats what this kid needs most, whether it's at benfica, in the nederlands or wherever, he needs 1st team, 1st division, play. and lots of it.

***got him and *PLAYED* him. sorry. tho it is kinda funny

He's just not good enough for tier 1 teams in the main european leagues. he should go to a second division team somewhere try to learn the game and build up confidence and experience...England would be good, so adaptation isn't so hard and he speaks the language.

Christ, anyone of us could start at Newcastle at this point.

Eredivisie would be a good move for Freddy. They have a long history of developing young players who need refinement. A year or two with the right club could do wonders for the boy.

Going to Holland would help his career tremendously.

Don't even hesitate - get this loan done.

Totally agree. He should have followed Michael Bradley to the Eredivisie from the start, where the game is extremely technical and he could compete for starting time.

Here we go again with Freddy. Another move, another coaching staff, another learning curve... Pick a team and stick through the tough times. You're not playing? Practice harder. Be so good that the manager has no choice but to play you. But enough with the constant switching. At this rate, he's going to be a 27 year old with his 10th club and whose international caps can be counted on two hands. Quit looking elsewhere and take a hard look in the mirror. He has the talent, the size will always be a question, as will his heart, work ethic and desire if he keeps moving ever couple of seasons looking for a better situation.

Good move......or this could just be another stop on the Fraudy Adu failure tour. Seems to me like everywhere he goes the coach does not need him.

And we were all told he left the gold cup to go back to Portugal and get his professional situation figured out. Well, the fact that he has been in Florida should speak volumes about what Benfica plan to do with him. American football fans need to give up with "he just needs time" argument because if you basically get dumped by your organization at the age of 20 even though you have 3 years left on your contract....it means they don't think you earned any playing time and you may never be good enough. Because last time I checked you have to earn playing time at the professional level, where jobs for many staff members are at stake each year. And this goes DOUBLE for an American footballer because of the bias and stigma that still follows our country in terms of football respect. And if Adu cant force his way through the ranks in practice at multiple clubs, just like everyone else, he will become a footnote in history.

I mean as I am typing this......I am still in shock that they would tell him to stay home.....that is the definition of a career "Kiss of Death"

Anyone know which Dutch club it would be? He would have an easier time breaking into the lineup at Groningen than he would At PSV, obviously.

July 28, 2009  12:38 PM ET

FYI - no such mention in any of the Dutch newspapers. If so, its going to be with a second rate team.

July 28, 2009  12:59 PM ET

which dutch team?

July 28, 2009  01:09 PM ET

Some of you guys are ripping Freddy like he wants to bounce around. He's not trashing Benfica. If they're not going to play him then he needs to play somewhere. Young guys get loaned out for that specific purpose all the time.

July 28, 2009  01:12 PM ET

I find it interesting that he can't even get PT here in the states. SUPPOSEDLY he was back in Portugal, trying to win a spot on his European team. Now this report states he was in Florida 'conditioning'.
We sure coulda used him in the Gold Cup finals!
Who represents this kid? The same group that mishandled Michael Jackson's life?

if you added a caption to the freddy pic above, what would it say?

July 28, 2009  01:13 PM ET

If he ever wants to be considered relevant in international play he needs to work on his game now. He had the opportunity years ago and didnt take it, stayed in DC and he is now just mediocre.

He needs to be there or 2nd division in any other major league.

July 28, 2009  01:19 PM ET

I kinda feel sorry for the guy. The worst part of being an American is taking the first offer over to Europe only to find yourself under contract with unstable clubs who don't know what they are doing with young talent. It's an ongoing story and Freddy wasn't the first and won't be the last.
