10:39 AM ET 07.28 | If you were beginning to worry about being able to see the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier on August 12th in English, it appears your fears are about to subside. NBC Universal, parent company of Telemundo, is offering all cable and satellite providers free access to Mun2, the channel set to show the USA-match at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The free access will be for the day of the match. If your cable/satellite provider still won't be offering Mun2, you can still get the English-language feed to the game on Telemundo using the SAP function.

from what it sounds like after watching the world football challenge over the weekend, lalas and bob lee will be there live leading up to the game on ESPN, kind of an OTL / sportscenter from the game thing. at least thats what lalas said a number of times during the chelsea broadcast

Hmmm... anyone with DirecTV know if mun2 (channel 410) requires the 2nd dish for the foreign language programming? While I'd love to see the game... I'm not exactly going to run out and throw a 2nd dish antenna on my house to do it... if not, I'll probably be completely SOL... the people I know with cable don't have DVRs... so that'd be a no-go....

I just found out that I do in fact get the mun2 on Cox Digital in LV. Which means now I have to find it...

So, we get a USA match without JP, Harkes, Bretos, or Sullivan. But we don't get Derek Rae or Adrian Healy. Speaking of which, did anyone else find Alexi Lalas to be somewhat tolerable during the WFC? I mean, I'd rate him about a 6 out of 10, mainly because he would still go off on the odd tangent, but I'm willing to forgive this based on the fact that they were friendlies and not competitive matches. At this rate, he might talk himself into another MLS GM job.

i thought lalas did well in the box. i think he needs to speak up though. not necessarily say more, just a tad louder, i had a hard time hearing him. which is odd considering you cant miss him when he's in studio. it will suck to not have derek or healy, i like them as announcers. and robbie mustoe (sp?). the healy/mustoe (sp?) tandem is one of espn's better combos i think. and i like tommy. he makes me laugh. not too big on jp and harkes, though they are getting better. jp is saying less as games go on.

Sounds like they picked up a trick from Sky Sports News...Sky did that for the Champions League final - 10 hours of coverage, something like that and had two guys watching the game and making comments.

I liked Lalas providing commentary. He was good about not making it about him and providing just enough information without ruining the game. He knows his stuff, but all of that gets lost when he has to sell the product as he did with LAG.

I can only hope Mun2 have a HD channel that I can find. I know where it's at in SD, but I am no fan of watching smudgy players on a greed blob if I can avoid it.

July 28, 2009  12:40 PM ET

I was really surprised by Lalas - he wasn't bad at all. Didn't talk too much and that helped in not having the play by play guy talk too much too.

And he didn't have the instant excitement that Bretos has all the time someone enters the box.

that photo scares me, for the love of god please don't let ching touch the pitch in this match BB. please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

telemundo does a terrible job with the camera work and actually showing the match, just as telefutura does also so this isn't exactly a best case scenario for fans in the US anyway you look at it as far as the tv viewing experience is concerned.

July 28, 2009  01:26 PM ET

I'm confused. Don't Lalas and Bob Ley work for ESPN? I thought I heard them say at the end of the WFC that they'd start coverage an hour prior to kickoff for the August 12 game?
I have Mun2 and Telemundo, I can watch it on either. It's always better than radio only.
It's kind of funny watching Lalas these days, with the suit and short hair. Talking about branding and using all these corporate terms. The beardless chin.
I can remember when he was known for enjoying Slurpees, rockin' out and speaking his mind against organized youth soccer. Funny how money changes things.
My only critiques of Lalas in the booth are; starting his sentences with the words, Look..., or Listen.... (i.e. Look, when you're in the booth, you gotta deliver. Listen, no one cares what I think.)
Then there's the constant, asking the question out loud, then answering it. ( At the end of the day, should I have not ruined the Galaxy? Yes. Will I eventually ruin another team? Probably.
Look, Listen...

July 28, 2009  01:27 PM ET

lol, guess ill have to go searching for Mun2... :D

but i think i may just take a half day and go watch it at a pub

July 28, 2009  01:28 PM ET

Based on what some of you are saying, I am officially declaring Alexi Lalas as the Matt Millen of MLS- A terrible GM who does a good enough job on TV to make us forget how terrible he is at running a team.

July 28, 2009  01:36 PM ET

crap, nevermind, i will not be able to take that off.... guess it'll be time to LAG down the server with a stream :D

July 28, 2009  01:45 PM ET

idiots...how does a big game not hit network television? This is the reason the MLS and soccer isnt growing. This is the perfect game to attract newer demographics. Instead they put it on Mun2, the spanish version of MTV. And somehow every year (every month) they seem to put every golf tournament on TV, even when Tiger's not there.

July 28, 2009  02:24 PM ET

I still won't be getting it.... Comcast in Southern Indiana stinks... You have to have satellite... I think I'm going to go watch it at a Mexican restaurant in town....

Nice work...that is a great critique on Lalas for that...very good point, he does that a lot.
BUT I will still take that over Bretos having a party in his pants with goal opportunities.

July 28, 2009  02:36 PM ET

QUE PUTAS DIJO!?!?!?

July 28, 2009  02:38 PM ET

i vote for bretos/sullivan, i love those guys
for some reason, espn's coverage of the sport totally annoys me, maybe its something with the american style "pump up the storylines around the league" instead of actually covering the game currently being played style of commentary, reminds me of wwf or the nba, harkes is awful, great player, awful color man

July 28, 2009  02:44 PM ET

I just checked the schedule for USA Network on Aug 12th - House and NCIS mini-marathons. The network shows tennis (and golf, I think) so sports are not out of the question. Considering the name of the network, and being owned by NBC, it would be PERFECT for USA-MEX - and they broadcast in HD too. Gulati needs to get on this ASAP - maybe even get Blatter to step in on behalf of FIFA as well - and pressure the new head of NBC to make the switch. NBC should not be allowed to hold this game hostage. Limited exposure hurts soccer, which hurts ABC (ESPN).
