Phone call brought Odom back to Lakers

08:29 AM ET 08.02 | The key juncture of the negotiations came two weeks ago when Lakers owner Jerry Buss grew frustrated that Lamar Odom hadn't snapped up the four-year, $36 million dollar contract the team had offered him. Odom explained Friday he thought he could squeeze a few more dollars out of the Lakers by waiting, acknowledging he was "surprised" when Buss yanked the offer off the table. Instead of getting upset and sulking off to join friends Pat Riley and Dwyane Wade in Miami for comparable money, Odom called Buss personally and explained how important it was to him to remain with the Lakers. Odom said Buss told him at the time he didn't want to pay the millions in luxury tax necessary to re-sign him, but the Lakers owner eventually softened his stance.

and the point of this story is ...

Miami will end up with almost the same roster as last year.
They only got departures and no incoming players.

I fear for the Heat fans that Wade won't stay for long

DR. BUSS, i like the way u do business!

DR BUSS, I LIKE THE WAY U DO BUSINESS!

cant blame much on LO, luckly both LO and LA came to their senses, he needs to be part of the team.

yup- when you have an owner that 'gets it' it is amazing how
things get done & your team never goes more than a year or 2
without being a contender.......
(not like my wonderful owner Mr Dolan)

I still don't get why Miami isn't after Sessions, Felton, Williams, or Lee. All are upgrades at every position...

looks like riley is just fishing to keep D wade sit still, but may have never intended to get upgrades. or else he could have offered odom with a better contract.

Wade is eventually get a boiling point.

I'm not the riley hater that alot of people on the boards are
but changing the topic....
wades teammates must be getting pissed at him-
he keeps saying he want's 'upgrades' - if you're on the team
how can you NOT take that as an insult ?

I personally think them NOT getting odom was a blessing in disguise. He would've helped this year - but would not have gotten them wehren they need to be and would have hurt their chances of getting better players in the future with his contract

August 2, 2009  11:15 AM ET

LO no proper contract negotiation can go down without good communication...if you want big dollars you need to prove your commitment as well.

August 2, 2009  11:15 AM ET

This is old news now so moving right fort!

but, as we've discussed before, who is more important? wade or his teammates? you've said it yourself it is much harder to find that superstar then those who surrounds him.

i can see the point about his teammates getting pissed, but it is a business, a business of winning, and if you dont, you have to look elsewhere to get those players, no?

u have to explain about how they would hurt their chances for players in the future...

I totally hear you, but considering they have like 10 contracts expiring and LO would have signed for the MLE it woulda been a decent signing.

The only problem is they expected a player to take lesser money and twiddled their thumbs while other free agents slowly disappeared.

Enough with the Odom Threads! Im just waiting for the "crazy" Spurs fans to arrive and turn it into a Spurs debate.

August 2, 2009  11:47 AM ET

The candyman finally got it right. Their not going to win a championship in south beach. Lakers and Celtics in the finals.

A FEW MORE DOLLARS, YOUR MAKING MILLIONS A YEAR. THINK ABOUT THE REST OF THE PEOPLE NOT MAKING CLOSE TO WHAT YOU MAKE. STOP BEING A BRAT

just more $$ onto the cap-

I don't want to get into it again- since it's a mute point-
but if they signed Odom + their current players with contracts+
a RAISE to Wade + having to give six more players contracts
they would've had only 10ish mil to give to a 'max' type player
and NO max guy is coming for a pay cut

first of all cool it with 100% caps-

secondly- why don't you take a few less $$ on YOUR paycheck
cause people in 3rd world countries only make 100$ a YEAR

- it's a business- it's his RIGHT to try and earn as much $$ as
he can for a FINITE amount of time he is a professional
- if he doesn't make the $$- the OWNERS keep the $-
it ain't going back to you & me
