07:22 AM ET 08.06 | The Jets' quarterback competition is incomplete at the moment. Coach Rex Ryan conceded yesterday that, through six days of training camp practices, the battle between Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez is at a relative deadlock.

Hey, this post is about football!

No agents, girlfriends, drugs or contracts. Wazzup?

August 6, 2009  07:42 AM ET

That defense better be really good this year for the J-E-T-S 'cause the offense will be struggling...

August 6, 2009  07:46 AM ET

Whomever they run out there will be starting the season 0-3, so might as well be Clemens.

August 6, 2009  07:48 AM ET

Good... it reads like they're making it a true competition. Hopefully it stays that way. The job shouldn't be handed to someone solely based on their contract.

August 6, 2009  07:55 AM ET

Well, if its close, you go with the rookie. Then you see if he can handle it or not. Some rookie QBs seem to excell at the challenge.

August 6, 2009  08:09 AM ET

good to see open competitions, hopefully the jets can atleast beat the cheatriots this year.

August 6, 2009  08:33 AM ET

Flacco was an anomaly. A fluke. You don't get anywhere with a rookie QB. Instead, you're more likely to end up like TJack or JoMarcus Russell.

If this guy Sanchez was worth drafting number 1 and paying number 1 money, then he's an investment. Treat him that way. Let him carry a clipboard and learn. It's not the same game he left last winter. He can't just put on a different jersey and go out and be the MVP.

Too many rookie QBs have been ruined by rushing them into that starting slot. Somehow, their own expectations are as high as the fans'. When they fail, everybody writes them off, and they never recover from that first bad year.

Yeah, a Tom Brady or a Payton Manning could improve this Jets team, but they're not going to the playoffs this year. Don't expect Sanchez to take them there. And don't punish Sanchez because it doesn't happen, either.

huh? why?
If it's a deadlock- go with the VETERAN who's at least had
some experience....the days of letting the rookie get battered
to see how he responds has gone out the window- when
he's getting TENS of millions in guarantees.

If he's ready to start- if he beats out the veteran- he should
start- but if it's close- go witht he Vet- it may save you even
ONE int- which might save a game...
then - after a few weeks of seeing REAL NFL games- not
scrimmage/not pre-season....if the vet struggles-
you bring the rook in as a 'savior'

August 6, 2009  09:05 AM ET

The Jets should start Chad Pennington. . . Oh wait! Sorry.

What about that Ryan kid with the Falcons? Wasn't he a rookie as well?

what is it they say about lightning striking the rear end of a dog once or twice in a lifetime or something like that? or is it sunshine?

well, you know what I mean...

Why don't they just start Brett Favre? Isn't he still on the roster?

They already tried that one. Hard to get him out of the trainers room. You don't see Miami trying to sign him long term.

August 6, 2009  10:14 AM ET

I don't think the QB battle matters here anyway. As long as they don't turn it over, they're good for Ryan. Now, their team is based on defense and their running game with Jones/Washington. They should also start learning the Wildcat to change things up, since they have Brad Smith.

wow - that's a funny one....
how'd you come up with that gem ?

ps- you know your from Minn, right ?
- for you to make ANY Brett Farve comment is a joke

yup-
chad is a nice QB- can run an offense, is productive-
but he eventually gets hurt and he simply cannot carry a team
on his shoulders cause his arm is bad- as evident by his
display in the playoffs this past year

No, ties always go to the big honking contract... Try explaining to your owner why you're keeping his big investment on the bench when he's just as good as the cheaper player.

The Fish need another year out of Pennington. The rest of the roster isn't ready, or they don't have it, despite the hype.

Yeah, they were a regular fish-out-of-water in the playoffs, but this was a dismal, sub-500 team the year before. I'm not a big Chad fan, but I'll have to admit he had a really good year with the Dolphins, better than he ever did with the Jets. He played over his head, and the rest of the team responded.

How many guys can do that? I'd rather have a guy with mediocre talent that gets me to the playoffs than a guy with all the potential in the world that can't reach down deep to win one.
