09:01 AM ET 08.08 | In the wake of a disastrous defeat, one in a series for a pitcher picked up to be a postseason savior, John Smoltz, 42, acknowledged that "time may not be on my side if this continues." Less than 12 hours later, after general manager Theo Epstein had flown in from Boston, time ran out on Smoltz. The future Hall of Famer had been humbled by pitiful performances on the mound. Now he was humbled by the Red Sox' decision yesterday to designate him for assignment. Epstein said the Sox were "open-minded" to having Smoltz remain with the team, and that the sides would reconvene next week.

He needs some time in the minors to get himself right. If he can't, then he should just hang it up.

Also, I feel his stint with Boston is a shame as, to me, it hurts his legacy as a Brave.

I agree science. He went with the money, Boston pulled a steinbrenner, and it just isn't a good situation.Hang up the glove. He's a hall of famer already. He's already made history. Time to go. I'm not sure what the BoSox were trying to do with him.

Of course both sides were hoping the arrangement would be mutually beneficial ... Smoltz would make a comeback and he could enjoy some more glory before retiring, and the Sox would have solid starting pitching. Unfortunately, neither happened and it hurt both sides instead.

Theo does make mistakes once in a while. I saw someone post it may have been a mistake to get rid of Lugo too?? Anyone else beginning to feel that way??

Okay, back to the dishes and laundry. Had to take a break.

Getting rid of Lugo was NOT a mistake. He sucks, and he is a wife beater.

Huh ?
remain as what...a ball boy?
Being designated for assignment means that you sucks so bad
that we doubt that we can even trade you.
.....we just want you gone

Okay, there's a definite no.

I took it to mean perhaps he'd be good as a pitching coach. But I think Smoltz has too much pride (or ego?) to admit he's done and take a job like that right now.

He could demonstrate how missing your spot with a fastball lacking movement will get you a 8+ ERA

Ooooo ... ZING!!

Good morning PK.

Ahhh ... just heard his choice is a demotion to Pawtucket. He's definitely not going for that.

I know- was just joking....
but what 'loyalty' would/should he have to Boston ?
he was there for a cup of coffee

I'd think his pride (as you said) wouldn't ever let this happen

Well, Boston gave him a chance ... shouldn't that be worth something? But, you're right ... he was there for a very short time ... and is probably rather disenchanted with them right now. I don't think he has any right to be though.

No. no right at all. If Smoltz made 5 bucks for his time with the BoSox it was a waste of money. He didn't help the team at all. Stating the obvious there with that last sentence, I guess, but it's the truth. If they would have been pitching somebody competent in all of his starts that Yankee lead in the division would be a bit smaller right about now.

Its time to hang up the jockstrap .....

agreed

Bostons big problem....in hindsight.....
has been that they are depending on guys that simply
don't go deep into games-
when only 2 of your starters can go past 6- eventually your
bullpen gets exposed and tired...which is what the Sox
are facing now (happily for us Yankee fans who have been
burdened by the same thing the last several years)

The Smoltz contract was reasonable, unlike the Lugo one. Thepo doesn't make too many big errors and this isn't one of them. For a team with their payroll it was worth the risk. If Bucholz wasn't stinking the joint up while Wakefield and Dice K were hurt no one would have noticed.
