09:48 AM ET 08.08 | The promoter of a mixed martial arts card March 7 in Tulare, Calif., confirmed Friday that one of the competitors was allowed to fight despite testing positive for Hepatitis C and having no test results on file for HIV. Al Joslin, who has promoted nine cards in California, said he learned of the situation about a week ago, when he was leaked a copy of a memo from the California State Athletic Commission. The commission is responsible for medical clearance of all MMA and boxing shows in the state. The memo did not identify the fighter, saying, "we are unable to provide you with further details because of various provisions of late related to medical privacy."

Actually, this is a bizarre move for California, not at all typical. California is among the most regulated states in the country. In fact, they often go out of their way to make things more difficult for their citizens. I think someone dropped the ball big time.

Holy Mother of STUPID, CA Commission!!! It's not a privacy issue when it could endanger the opponent of the fighter...

August 8, 2009  04:08 PM ET

If I was the other fighter I would slap a lawsuit on the CAC so fast. Talk about reckless endangerment. The CAC is supposed to protect fighters not put them in danger of a life long illness. This is pathetic. You used steroids, no fighting for you, but if you test for a disease that could potentially kill another fighter, yeah, go ahead and fight. What a joke.

There is no explanation or excuse for allowing this to happen. The person responsible should be removed from the position of responsibility. And held liable if the opposing fighter is found to have contracted Hep.C Whoever the opposing fighter was probably couldn't spit out the words "lawsuit" and "IM going to smash his face in" fast enough.

August 9, 2009  02:31 AM ET

Who ever makes that decision has me at a loss for words. How does someone tell themselves "the positives of letting this fight happen anyway are better than the negatives of canceling it" When this guy was born and they were handing out brains his must have gotten confused with a soccer ball.

That is the difference between Boxing and MMA.. Boxing is a sport, MMA is a backyard street brawl.. They belong on You Tube not PPV. Ask Kimbo.

Really? didn't Tommy Morrison box with HIV? Boxing is dying, didn't you get that memo? Boxing is about 1/7th of MMA...ie. punching only.
