NBA execs: LeBron's staying in Cleveland

08:06 AM ET 08.11 | The consensus among NBA executives is LeBron James will remain in Cleveland, mostly because there may not be anywhere better to go. The big threat was the Knicks. But the declining salary cap likely won't allow the Knicks enough salary cap space to sign two free agents. The Knicks roster is awful, and it likely would be a major step back competitively for James to join a team like that. With Kobe Bryant back with a championship, it is now James -- before it was Bryant when James made the Finals in 2007 -- who is most likely to be anxious to be with a team that has the best chance to win a championship. The belief is the Cavs will be a better option, and, of course, can provide him the biggest contract.

Good thing for Cavs fans the NBA execs have mind control over LeBron.

August 11, 2009  08:25 AM ET

Never thought he was leaving and why would he for NY. That team IS horrible! That said, the Cavs have work to do to get back to the finals, and as currently constructed, I don't think they'll make it there. Cavs are built for the season, Boston is built for the playoffs!

Someone other that LBJ has to step up on that team when it counts most (playoffs).

Stevie Wonder saw this one comming.

August 11, 2009  08:31 AM ET

he's not leaving and the Cavs will OWN the NBA soon

we have all been witnesses to his attempts so far. All he has managed is getting swept in his only trip to the finals. Would not put all your eggs in that basket with Mike Brown as the coach.

Yeah right! The irritating thing is that we are going to have to read about a million stories on LeBron leaving, not leaving, going to team X, going to team Y, no he is staying, he is leaving.........UGHHHHHHHH!

He's staying and that's the bottomline (I have said this for awhile now). Anther factor to add to my list is the declining econmy makes it hard for him to go anywhere else and get a big contract, especially the garbage Knicks. I guess the declining econmy is the silver lining on this grey cloud for Cav fans.

He's leaving.... believe me when I say that... he's gone....

August 11, 2009  09:40 AM ET

As a Knicks fan I always believed he was going to stay in Cleveland because there is no real reason to go to the Knicks unless he just wanted to play in the Garden all the time (which I highly doubt). Yes the Knicks roster is far from good unless somehow the young guys we have turn out good (which I hope but realistically just don't see happening) but the thing is, it's not like the Cavs are that much better minus LeBron. So I think he stays because he is an Ohio guy and likes it there and going to the Knicks would just be a sideways step (not a backward one because Mo Williams is th eonly decent player on the Cavs and he is borderline good)

August 11, 2009  09:41 AM ET

i dont see why anybody in their right mind would willingly sign with the knicks. I dont see him going anywhere either. If Shaq plays like he did last year they will be pretty good cuz the rest of the east is trash pretty much. Go Lakers

August 11, 2009  09:46 AM ET

He wins with Shaq this year and then he leaves for NY. He's young enough to be up to the challenge of rebuilding a team... He will leave for NY because eventually he will OWN the Knicks franchise. LJ will take the Knicks jersey MERCHANDISING global just like MJ did with the Bulls. Come on. A Cavs jersery? Please! The Knicks will be able to charge crazy money for TELEVISION rights. You think he's making bank on ENDORSEMENTS now? If you don't think Stern salivates over having LJ in NY you are out of your feakin mind. Make money money make money money!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus this rumor has never ever ever never made any sense. Especially for those who use the "Lebron wants to be a billion dollar global icon" argument. Hello people this is 2009! He can be a global icon from a cave if he has an internet connection!

Really? Where's he going? While you're at it, who's going to win the super bowl this season and where's the stock market headed?
